Aquadorsa -- "Cloudlands" -- CD -- €13
2009 Glacial Movements Records, GM006
Aquadorsa is a new musical Italian ambient project formed by Enrico Coniglio and Oophoi. Their first work “Cloudlands” is a perfect mix of glitch, classical and orchestral glacial ambient soundscape. Enrico Coniglio is a guitar player and composer and his research has increasingly focused on the relationship between 'music' and 'landscape ', in an attempt to represent the contemporary crisis of the territory, the loss of nature and identity of places, and the unknown on the evolution of post-urban and post-industrial territory. He has collaborated with various artists, including: Nicola Alesini, Joachim Roedelius and Elisa Marzorati. He has produced some releases such as "AREAVIRUS - topofonie vol.1" (2007 Psychonavigation), "dyanMü (2008 Psychonavigation) and digital releases Sapientumsuperacquis on Touch Radio (Touch records) and Cro`nicaster (Cro`nica Electronica). Gianluigi Gasparetti better know as Oophoi started his own music experiments in 1995, trying to explore the shores of deep space-ambient. His live album "The spirals of time", released in 1997 by Amplexus, has been voted as one of the best ambient albums of all times. Oophoi uses traditional instruments as synths and sampling machines and his music is recorded using analog-only devices in The Kiva. He has released CDs for many International labels such as Amplexus, Hypnos, Nextera, Prikosnovenie and Glacial Movements and he has collaborated with Louisa John Krol,Alio die,Mathias Grassow and Klaus Wiese. Atrabilis Sunrise -- "Altered Alternative (Boredom Level)" -- CD-R -- €7
2004 Deserted Factory, DF016, (ltd. 100)
I like gritty ambience. When ambience is too smooth and produced like a pop record, in many cases the mood is destroyed. I would not consider Atrabilis Sunrise (continuation of dark-industrial act Catharsis) to be ambient. It definitely has ambient and dark-industrial influences, but it's more varied, harsh and complex in structure. It's affected by too many musical styles to call it just that. It's a little psychotic, a little edgy and pretty disturbing. Ranging from decent ambient, to hammering industrial, to weird sonic experimentation Atrabilis Sunrise knows how to retain the attention of the listener. Filthy distorted noises, a lot of breaks, broken percussion and sizzling electronics. A soundtrack to a fever dream. I cannot pinpoint the exact influences of this project. Brighter Death Now an Atrax Morgue? Scorn and Mental Destruction? It's quite clear that 'Padre P.C.' is followings his own somewhat strange musical route, maniacal and dark. Enjoyable insanity in 17 tracks without reaching the boredom level. [JS, Funprox webzine]

Bad Sector -- "CMASA" -- CD -- €13
2009 Power & Steel, PAS 23
In 2005 Massimo Magrini was invited to provide a soundtrack for the M3M art exhibition in Pisa/Italy. The exhibition was based around images of the seaside and the rivers estuary of Pisana area with CMASA airplane factory built there in it's centre vis a vis of archaic marine cottages. This marvelous seaside scenery mixed with vintage industrial locations, together with some kind of nostalgia, created an unexpected but amazing mood. To sculpture a soundtrack of this scenery Massimo Magrini was asked to use acoustic and natural sounds too and so he added for this work treated piano and snippets of acoustic guitars together with water sounds and metal samples. This may sound unusual for a BAD SECTOR release but all those new elements are perfectly blent into the massive and ambient soundwaves for what previous releases are known for and making CMASA probably to the most emotional album of Massimo Magrini to date. All initial exhibition sounds where regenerated, remastered and re-assembled during 2007-2009. Digipack. [press-release]

Brandkommando -- "Love Forever" -- CD-R -- €7
2007 Deserted Factory, DF039, (ltd. 100)
During the last years a small community of musicians and labels in Poland have come into existence, who are creating dissonate sonic sculptures in the tradition of bands/musicians like Whitehouse, Non, Merzbow or Slogun. Brandkommando, a Polish one-man unit who is not really unknown in the power noise underground. This album has been released in 2007 on the Japanese avantgarde label Deserted Factory and 'Love Forever' consits of seven songs. Song titles like 'Massmord', 'Tortured' or 'Slaugheter' give a small hint that this album is not really about love but more about the dark sides of the human nature. The music is as uncomfortable as the song-titles, and everyone who's not into this kind of sound will be forced to push the stop-button after the first song. All those who are into the above mentioned groups will love this album. Heavy soundwaves with a hefty distortion unfold an intensive and uncomfortable drone and sometimes a subtle rhythm creeps through this textures. 'Elaborat Pseudofilozoficzny' is accompanied by martial and monotonous percussion, while a track like 'Tortured' showcases Brandkommando from an extreme aggressive side. At times a heavy distorted voice is breaking through the massive sound, but almost the complete album is instrumental. What all songs have in common is the fact that they're very hypnotic and kaleidoscopic, due to different integrated sounds. 'Love Forever' is dynamic, sinister and varied listening experience with songs that are mostly about the ten minutes mark. Wrapped up in an unusual cover artwork the new album of BRANDKOMMANDO offer more than just pure noise, especially when you're not only a casual listener. This is really mind-altering music. D.B.P.I.T. -- "Journey To The Center Of Noise" -- CD-R -- €7
2007 Deserted Factory, DF036, (ltd. 150)
As the title anticipates, this work by DBPIT is based on sounds and noises personally recorded during his travels around the world, by means of minidisc, videocamera, photocamera and mobile phone. Each sound, or combination of sounds, heavily processed and effected, gives life to a sort of "tribute-track" to this or that place; the places and type of noise recorded are listed in the album leaflet as well as the other instruments used for each track; the journey reaches out to outer space with the only sounds lent by an outsource: NASA's probes around the galaxy. D.B.P.I.T. / Kenji Siratori -- "Mandala" -- CD-R -- €7
2007 Deserted Factory, DF041, (ltd. 100)
'Mandala' is the result of the collaboration between D.B.P.I.T. and Kenji Siratori and both have managed to break with usual musical conventions and to explore the world of avantgardistic experimental music, influenced by early Industrial music. While D.B.P.I.T. create very obscure and mystical sounds with the help of varied instruments, what sometimes reminds me to early electronic music from Germany, Kenji Siratori is responsible for the spoken words and both were supported by guest musicians on two tracks (Wertham and Mushy). I would love to understand all the lyrics, but on the other hand the Japanese language increases the exotic quality of the music. 'Mandala' is a damn intensive album, and everyone who will listen to it in the night with headphones on can't resist against its effect. The trumpet in 'Dust Nirvana' or 'Hetero Syndrome' adds a jazzy touch to the bizarre sound and some loops cause a rhythmic background so that it helps not to lose the orientation within the songs. 'Cyber Larva' is just eerie and surreal sonic art, that is definitely not made for timid people, but actually this album is like a thrilling ride through the tunnel of horror. 'Mutated Paradise' confuses the listener with additional piano sounds, but they don't bring any kind of relaxation but more scary feelings. I think, it will be very nice to take some LSD before listening to this album, but to be honest here you don't need an mind-expanding subtances because 'Mandala' has the same effect. It delivers fried minds and black aesthetics in equal measure and the Japanese label Deserted Factory have shown their unwillingness to conform. Highly recommendable! [KK, Cosmic Lava]

2009 Equilibrium Music, EQM026
Deutsch Nepal -- "Erosion" -- CD -- €13
1999/2009 Autarkeia, ACD 035
This probably the most depressing Deutsch Nepal album, earlier released as a limited edition by Staalplaat company, now has again become available to a wide audience. Genial project author Der General has made a remark sometime ago that during the recording of Erosion there persisted the feeling that this is the last work of Deutsch Nepal after which nothing will remain... perhaps only death. This almost came true as Deutsch Nepal went silent after the recording for nearly 10 years. Now the masterpiece of melancholy clad in an elegant digipack (the design was made by the author himself) and with an enhanced sound triumphantly opens the golden worlds to the audience again. The worlds where breathing becomes harder each moment and where you feel only a small useless toy. [press-release]

Deutsch Nepal -- "Tolerance" -- CD -- €13
1994/2009 Autarkeia, ACD 037
The genial album Tolerance is one more golden deja vu of the industrial culture, released by Staalplaat label long ago, sold out and desperately sought and hunted in auctions by collectors. The new release of the cult album enjoys the enhanced sound and the new package design from the author Lina Baby Doll. And this time it does not come out in limited edition like its predecessor. The new generations can get it without limitations. Those who do not know Lina Baby Doll’s masterpieces, should be informed that Tolerance is an artefact of the early stage of project’s Deutsch Nepal music. The period is characterised by ritual tribal rhythms, mesmerising loops and indeed suggestive psychedelic atmosphere. [press-release]

ESE (Entheogenic Sound Explorers) -- "The Other Door" -- CD-R -- €11
2008 Databloem
Flutwacht -- "Herbstrost" -- CD -- €10
2008 The Tourette Tapes, TT#10 / Deserted Factory, DF045, (ltd. 500)
Last year performance by Flutwacht at Noise Central Festival in Utrecht was one of the best gigs I saw that Year. Especially the encore he gave due to the absence of the DJ. With a Grinder machine he attacked his own made metal string instrument he also used during the performance and looped the scraping sounds with an awesome result. Herbstrost starts subtle with subcutaneous drones and distant voices. The atmosphere is threatening while the deep brooding spacious sound crawls up the spine. Slowly it swirls around your neck. Visions of abandoned factories appear in front of your eyes, an industrial landscape with huge machines connected with tubes releasing scary rumbling sounds from animal running through them. Within the third track some noise is coming up, a wall of distortion is carefully built and it even becomes rhythmic. The huge wall is full of sound is made from layers of distortion but sounds subtle in frequency. From here Herbstrost becomes noisier and more rhythmic. Harsh threatening and rhythmic noise from within the depths of this metal machine. Scraping rhythms like grinding metal surfaces. Nice layers of noise and screaming voices in track four. This is a harsh track with a more aggressive approach and a deep rumbling bass. Friends of more rhythmic noise are served promptly in track five. Heavy rhythmic squeaking and grinding noises looped into a fine rhythm on which you can move your body firmly if you like. The sound is changing constantly while thy rhythm pounds on harshly and monotonous. With some machine gun rhythms in track six Flutwacht is transforming in real rhythm industrial that wouldn't disappoint machine fest fans. As the track evolves the sound grows thicker with more layers of noise added. Then the sound returns to deep rumbling distortions with subcutaneous bass sounds. Monotonously the metal machine rotates on, grinding your bones with its massive instruments. The last song returns to the ambient side of Flutwacht with a hypnotizing pulsing sound that continues for over fifteen minutes, and the circle is closed as Herbstrost ends subtle with subcutaneous drones. Herbstrost is good noise with something to offer to everyone enjoying this genre from subtle dark ambient to aggressive power electronics to rhythm industrial. A great new CD from a great performer. Frozen Ocean -- "Steamworks: Hibernation" -- CD-R -- €7
2009 Operator Produkzion, OPERPRODUKT38, (ltd. 62)
The age of steam technology left almost the same mark in mankind culture history as stone or bronze ages. Locomotives, steamboats, manufactures based on steam power - all this formed the basis for civilization in XIX and early XX centuries. Now this age is gone but it still inspires technical artists working in different genres. The Moscow based project Frozen Ocean also paid it's homage in the form of beautiful old school industrial dark ambient album dedicated to steam technology. Now even the official mass media seriously consider the possible demise of modern industry based on electrical energy (2012 cataclysm) and who knows, maybe today's state of steam machines is just a hibernation before future awakening?... Inade -- "The Incarnation Of The Solar Architects" -- CD -- €13
2009 Loki Foundation, LOKI 50
There is a world that shadows our world, a world of mysterious design and unspoken secrets, of space that breathes and infinite echoes that never cease to cry. Mirrors that refract images into dark pools of cosmic nothingness. Inade explore these worlds on their latest masterpiece, The Incarnation of the Solar Architects, in which sound is utilized in a transformative manner, not only to focus on that which lies beyond and that which has never been seen, but to embrace the Darkness and let it wash over one's soul. The mythology that Inade has created touches that place beyond forever, yet now, through the insistence of that which lurks in the margins, a metamorphosis has transpired, in which the cosmos of self has awakened. If one believes that God is everywhere, so is the Darkness that came before Him. A Darkness thriving with anonymous ideals (the possibilities are endless... ) and devious intentions, resplendent with mystical creatures that shamble through antediluvian kingdoms constructed from polished metal, luxurious crystals, and unlimited dreams... though one would need new eyes to see them, and new ears to hear them. Inade provide the soundtrack--the frisson of unease is abundant, a churning, seething dread that veers into awe. It's up to the individual listener to listen intently, behind shuttered eyelids... to see and experience the true labyrinthine hierarchy of black splendor that awaits. [press-release]

Juhning, Herz -- "Miasma" -- CD -- €15
2009 Galakthorrö 024
After Herz Jühning has whetted the appetite of so many listeners with his Faces EP, Galakthorrö now is proud to be able to present Herz Jühning's first Longplayer. On Miasma he combines the kinetic energy of Power-Electronics with favourite ingredients from the witches'cauldron of Angst Pop. You will hear brutal bass-drones, nasty electrified currents, pumping analog rhythms and eerie frequency modulations. The sound elements have been ruthlessly selected to emphasise the reductive characteristics, and brought together around the incisive vocals to form an homogenous and complete work of art. Whether ailing popsongs, aggressive noise-attacks, or ominous sound experiments, all is artfully united in the 13 songs found on Miasma. Once more it is Jühning's no-frills arranging technique, that shows itself to be so highly effective on Miasma, just as it made Faces so successful. There is much to discover and Miasma will take the hearts of its listeners by storm! How could it not? CD in matt finish digipac, 16-page booklet incl. lyrics. [press-release]

Kuu -- "Suomi or the Well of Impossible Wishes" -- CD -- €11
2008 Twilight Records, TW 1.46
Kuu is the name that Finnish people gives to the moon. The action: the battle with yourself. The scene: the flat and snowy lands of Finland under the northern lights. This is the context where take place the drama of Kuu. A collection of poems that focus the problem of self conscience, the misunderstanding of feelings, the internal chaos. To be completely alone in a foreign land with an internal conflict, only being able to talk with the moon, with Kuu. She is the one who can hear your laments and hug you when everything is lost. There exists always an exit. Based in his experiences in Finland in 1999, Kuu wrote these poems. Later he decided to transform them into music in 2001. He talked with Bitxo, a friend from Barcelona, gave him the poems and explained him his experiences. So, Bitxo recorded electro-acoustic basis and Kuu went to Barcelona to record the voices. Finally the tracks were sent to Sheffield where Matt Howden includes a violin line to some of them. An amazing trip trought different geographies.. you can say its dark folk, ambient, electronic, its just KUU!! [press-release]

N.Strahl.N -- "Koordinatenpunkte" -- CD-R -- €7
2009 Deserted Factory, DF046, (ltd. 100)
Silent whispering sounds of scraping metal and a diversity of tape loops are used to create tasteful industrial sound constructions with a dark uncomfortable atmosphere. N.Strahl.N creates dark ambient noise which is filmic. Long shots of old black and white movies of old decaying factories or people working with transmitting sets. N.Strahl.N is hyper active Mario Löhr who has made a lot of recordings with this project already in its short existence of only four years with already six releases only for this year. Koordinatenpunkte is an interesting listening experience in nine "punkten" with different atmospheres in which N.Strahl.N will bring you into various filmic situations from factories, transmitting centre to U- boats or deep dark forests like in "Punkt I". All tracks have slow dark atmospheres in which every movement takes its time. The music evolves slowly and is building some tense. The analogue sounds are warm and seductive and you will be picked up easily within the atmosphere, sucked into mysterious scenarios with slow rhythm, clattering or scraping metal, different pulses and drones. The swelling compositions are rhythmic due to the use of pulses and loops and are minimal in instrumentation which gives an open sound with subtle industrial elements. However the music is dark it also is very relaxed and mellow... [Remco / Gothtronic]

Ninth Desert -- "Neyss" -- CD-R -- €7
2008 Deserted Factory, DF042, (ltd. 150)
Desolated landscapes of various feedback sounds like a blowing wind over monolithic plateaus grinding the rocks into dusty clouds of sand. Ninth Desert creates atmospheric sonic landscapes made of subtle feedbacks and other cavernous metallic sounds. Unfortunately most tracks are short and end abruptly awaking me rude from my listening experience. Ninth Desert is an ambient project by Frenchman Cyril Herry who may also be known from other projects like Ashes to Ashes. Neyss is already his fifth album for his Ninth Desert project, and second for Japanese Deserted Factory label. The atmosphere on this CD is dark and industrial but the tracks are very much the same in construction and structure. I do like to hear the separate tracks but the whole CD in one run causes some lost of attention and makes Neyss into nice background sound. [Remco / Gothtronic]

Ninth Desert / Materiel Brouilleur -- "Ainos" -- CD-R -- €7
2008 Deserted Factory, DF043, (ltd. 150)
In the pile of Deserted Factory releases I recently got to review, was next to neyss by Ninth Desert also a co-release with Materiel Brouilleur. Hearing the music on the site of Materiel Brouilleur their music is more rhythmic and electronic of nature than that of Ninth Desert. Strange enough I do not hear these influences on Ainos, in fact Ainos sound pretty similar to Neyss except for the fact that Ainos is more mechanical in atmosphere. What makes Ainos more interesting is the length of the tracks. The lengthier tracks give more atmosphere while there is more time to dive into it. The sound is thicker with more layers of sound which makes the music more dimensional. There are heavy metallic drones with distant drives of pounding sounds with deep resonance like a pile of clattering and scraping metal. The growing sounds in second track "Sennassiom" are building some tense with swirling intensifying drones. This tension is carefully expended in next track "Seriel" with subtle plane metallic sound like a lathe with its turning chisel scraping. "Maz Experience" is a hypnotizing swirl which is, unfortunately a bit short and last track "Depressive western" becomes almost melancholic with a slow melody. Within this corporation the minimal approach works well and both men have created a nice album with atmospheric compositions and tense full moments. [Remco / Gothtronic]

ROME -- "Flowers From Exile" -- CD -- €14
2009 [Trisol] Music Group GmbH, TRI 362 CD
Into the heart… With ‘Flowers from Exile’, the Luxembourgish folk formation ROME surpass their work to date, which already includes three full-length albums in just a few years. Just as early releases were apocalyptic and aggressive in nature, the expressionistically-tinged CD ‘Masse Mensch Material’ (2008) could be said to have a revealed inner vision. ROME’s universe was expanded by proud resignation and sweet melancholy... The latest album, ‘Flowers from Exile’ (2009) goes a step further in this direction. Similar to the early albums of the legendary songwriter Leonard Cohen, stories from the (inner) exile are told here with fatalistic gestures and dark timbre; of the longing for a lost homeland, of loneliness and eternal travels, but also of unexpected friends far away and the actual homeland in your own heart. Songs such as ‘The Secret Sons of Europe’ or ‘To Die Among Strangers’ (which was previously released as a CD single) form a song cycle full of metaphors for estrangement – the poetry of longing. Highly detailed arrangements use the sound of the flamenco guitar as well as mysterious samples, pulsating beats and sad melodies. In ROME’s songs there lives a stoic sense of the melodramatic. As well as Cohen, one must look to icons such as Tom Waits and late Johnny Cash in order to be able to describe the lyrics and voice of Jerome Reuter... ‘Flowers from Exile’ is just as much an emotional as a critical work. The personally stamped album of a modern singer-songwriter which tells of journeys both within and without. Jerome Reuter’s moving vocals and Patrick Damiani’s complex musical arrangements leave the musical roots of folk far behind and send these ‘flowers from exile’ to all listeners who are willing and capable of feeling the dignity, the hope and the pride behind the lyrics and who are prepared to recognise themselves in those restless spirits whom the twelve part song cycle conjures up. Into the heart… [press-release]

Skare -- "Solstice City" -- CD -- €13
2009 Glacial Movements Records, GM005
Skare is the collaboration of Mathias Josefson (Moljebka Pvlse), Fredrik Olofsson and Per Ahlund. The members of Skare are all fascinated by the circulation of water, snow and ice. The metamorphosis from gas to floating liquid to snow to solid ice through freezing, the light reflecting from the snow and filtered through the ice as a prisma and - most of all - the sound of this ever ongoing circle... Skare's first album, Solstice City, is an interpretation of a journey through a shifting landscape where the city meets nature. Departing from a distant and foreign shore, the traveller embarks a ship, uncertain of his destination. This prelude, introduced vividly in "To the other shore", releases this pilgrim to further explore yet unchartered territories. Leaving all man-made conventions, the second track "Through Wind and Broken Ice" takes us where the city imitates nature. Finally, a factory appears in the whiteout; a place where angels are manufactured as presented in the final track "The Snow Angel Factory"... Reissue of two 10" from the years 1998 and 2003. Daur is the very first release of TROUM and it resents very post-rock sounding material wth a lot of decipherable guitar parts and good drive. Ljubimaya was released by the Russian label Waystyx and carries you towards lyrical and touchy eternity of everbeginning melodies without an end, into emptiness of existence with all the uterine roar provided by YEN POX project in one of the tracks. The covers uses psychodelic image manipulations by Dmitri "HUM" Chistov. [press-release]

Juhning, Herz -- "Miasma" -- LP -- €38
2009 Galakthorrö 024, (ltd. 414)
12" LP, black vinyl, sturdy cardboard cover, printed inner sleeve and insert card incl. all lyrics. [press-release]

A cassette reissue of CDR published by UFA-Muzak. Collaboration project of Russian underground musicians standing behind Ryr, Thernoblyad and >O< is dedicated to German researches of the South Pole made in the 30ies of XX century. This disc can definitely break your view on how should sound military industrial concerned with National-Socialism. Insane collages made from retro music, German speech samples and mad sound-trash from Ryr are supplemented with savage industrial noise and rhythms from Thernoblyad and >O<. The guys evidently have outstanding imagination, all together it is listened on one breath. The booklet contains several collages comparable to music. "Deep penetration into the dark waters of occult-theosophic Reich, made together by projects Ryr, Thernoblyad and >O<, mystyc atmosphere of alchemic death, combined with cosmic vision of unknown areas of world and man. The secret of "Last Sacral King", "Haunebu" project, operation "Valkyrie" have become topics for this collaboration. Flying saucers, enigmatic arctic bases, experiments with time and space - everything finds its reality here. Cold industrial sound implicitly subdueds the consciousness to move towards the North. Ritual kicks and chtonic frost, analogue noise hell, burning apparatus and exalted classics." [UFA-Muzak press-release]

Baghiri, Amir -- "Exosphere" -- CD-R -- €11
2005 Blue Box, BB001
A mixture of masterful, spooky alien soundscapes and fluid textures by one of ambient music premier electro-tribal sound designers. "Exophere" offers ten tracks making up 68 minutes of music continuing the fine tradition of space & tribal ambient which Baghiri is known for. The album starts off quiet but after a few minutes a slow and later on accelerating and prominent sequence shows up which is reminiscent of the extended track "In the Heat of Venus" on Steve Roach’s album "Western Spaces". [label info]
Baghiri, Amir -- "Planet X" -- CD-R -- €11
2006 Blue Box, BB002
Inspired by the exotic astrophysical phenomena of the 10th planet. An in-depth ambient turmoil of 76 minutes, blending deep soundscapes with sequenced pieces (in Amir’s words: "multidimensional ambient & groove creation") and environmental sounds. A certain touch of Steve Roach’s music still can’t be missed, but again Amir shows he’s has found his way in the genre by exploring his own musical pathways over the years. In a way it’s a pleasant dream flight with some more active passages, but in no way background music. This highly atmospheric and well produced recording certainly deserves both thumbs up. Brand, Steve -- "Looking into the Other" -- CD-R -- €9
2007 Afe Records, afe094lcd, (ltd. 100)
Ritual / Tribal / Ambient. Steve Brand has been creating sound art and visual art since the mid-80's. From 1995 to 2003 he was active as Augur, creating obscure and organic music which was released on many labels worldwide, including The Foundry, Manifold, Alluvial, Self-Abuse and others. During the years he had the chance to collaborate with artists such as Jeph Jerman (Hands To, Animist Orchestra), Rick Kitch (I Am Umbrella, Lucky Cricket), PBK, James P. Keeler (Wilt), Brooke Oates (Birds of Tin), etc. His atmospheres, alarmingly austere, with varying shades of gray, are drenched in allusion and a heightened sense of cinematic noir for the listener. According to his own words, "emotional aspects of a recording always come first". Consisting of six long tracks, "Looking Into the Other" takes up where "Awakensong" (...released on Afe in April 2006...) left off, expanding the exploration of twilight worlds. The album utilizes bells, synthesizers, voice, various flutes, medicine drums, cymbals, fiddle, rattles, prayer bowls, etc. Once again, with this work Steve has created an high quality and excellent album of deeply emotional music, and proved himself as one of the most inspired authors in contemporary Ritual Ambient... Corder, Jason & Opium -- "Autunno" -- CD-R -- €11
2006 Practising Nature, PN019
Jason Corder's percussive minimalism interwoven with Opium's drones. Jason Corder - The moniker "Off the Sky" was originally birthed as a simple misinterpretation of an obscure line from that famous film Trainspotting. Random as its conception was, Off the Sky is an all too apropos title summating the dub-atmospheric and acoustic solo projects emanating from Jason Corder's studio in Kentucky, USA. It is a humble hand that reflects both his mild mannered nature and his usual "in-the-clouds" mind-set. Jason's musical style is loosely inspired by the likes of Monolake, Gas, and Christian Fennesz. Teo Zini (Opium) was born in Bollate, Milan (Italy) in 1979 and now lives in Varese. His love for electronic music began when he was 15. His first experiments were created with the first home personal computer soundcards. Through software he creates rich drones and complex soundscapes often using etnic/tribal sounds and beats. Opium is also involved in other projects such as Sola Translatio with Alio Die. [label info]

Fire In The Head -- "Screams for the Mute" -- CD-R -- €7
2005 Deserted Factory, DF028, (ltd. 200)
To get some more information on an artist, it's always good to look at their website. And when it comes to Fire in the Head, we see an indication for what we are about to hear when we look at the links-section: Guilty Connector, Slogun, Sickness, Control, Skullflower/Ramleh, Grey Wolves/Open Wound & Survival Unit. Fire in the Head can be labelled harsh noise, a type of music definitly not for the weak. For as far as I know, most artists in the genre are from America and Asia, but in Europe it's also being produced more and more. The genre is a little bit less 'constructed' as power electronics, but what it lacks in structure is made up for in agression. Provided you can handle the sounds, you can play this album on repeat. Every time you notice new layers and new depth within the tracks and after a few rounds, the beaty really reveals itself. 'Watch And Burn' is a great droney track, while 'Playing God' and 'Floodgate' are way more opressive in nature ('Floodgate' actually hurts a bit). The masterpiece on this album is the final track 'Through Jaded Eyes'. It's a beautifully created noisescape with a melancholic feel. The CD isn't really accessible for a larger audience, but it is definitly worth buying for noise-addicts and maybe also people who want to try out something without beats, but with a lot of power. In re-freshed sound quality, and with a new look: a 24 page monster booklet which is filled to the top with blood-enriched pictures and texts, with which the listeners can also enjoy themselves visually. In addition to the well-known "Trilogie des Blutes" from 1995, there are three bonus tracks ("Nachblutung"), to listen to, which also stem from this period. These have, however, only now been fully completed in order to be included in this re-issue from mr. and mrs. Arafna. [press release]

Haus Arafna -- "Butterfly" -- CD -- €15
2003 Galakthorrö 014
Third album is finally here, after five years delay. New Haus Arafna album... well, it's very different from all previous works. Some of you who already had opportunity to listen "Fur Immer" 7"-single will definitely understand what I mean. The old fans should be amazed. No, there is even more fascination of the beyond and general darkness. Just like the prominent horror movie which is well done without dead bodies, blood streams and other superficial features of borrowed violence - no need for that while really frightening. All the senses are submerged into fathomless pit of human soul, still continuing torture and threaten with inexplicable force. An awful prophecy and damnable firmness - a bitter grin turns to deadly mask. This album is not so easy to understand, for me it took at least five times to play it back again and again, then something more or less distinct began to standing up against me. On the other hand, there are many people who didn't heard any previous Haus Arafna song, the new generation - seems that for them "Butterfly" should be more accessible. I even think that it could bring much new flesh into the fans camp. According to musicians, this is their first album sincerelly devoted to the true love sense, and logical develpement out of previous releases - like it always was and, I hope so, always will be. Herbst9 vs Z'EV -- "Through Bleak Landscapes" -- CD -- €13
2007 Loki Foundation, Loki 45
With this stunning collaboration the dark cavernous drones and ethnic-ritual instrumentation of Herbst9 melts with the complex and percussive sounds of industrial pionier and master of rhythmajik Z'EV. Ten tracks of deep spheres and blazing ruminant lightnings abducting you into golden constellations and swirling worlds full of aural effects and demonic resonance. Both projects worked with raw material of each other while the final mix was made by Herbst9. The result is a sombre and meditative soundtrack made with gongs, choral textures, deep vibrating strings and scraping effect-sounds reaching it's climax with outbursting tribalistic sequences and drummings. An impressive and gripping journey through bleak landscapes and abandoned places accompanied by a 24-pg booklet. [press-release]

Hollowing & Chaos As Shelter -- "Heavenly Letter" -- CD-R -- €9
2005 Mechanoise Labs, [mn025], (ltd. 100)
Appearing at times of despair and plagues across Europe, the flagellants believed in punishing themselves in the hope that God would not. Their processions of self-flagellation lasted 33,5 days, matching the number of years in Christ’s life, and served as penance for their sins and those of others. The Heavenly Letter refers to the text that they believed was a direct ultimatum from God himself: humanity, failed and corrupt, had one last chance at reform before the destruction of all life. Denounced as heretics by the Church, they were persecuted and driven underground. During the Black Death in 1348, the same letter reappeared with an added paragraph that addressed the plague, and became the manifesto of a reborn flagellant movement. As times went on and the world didn't end as expected, enthusiasm for self-scourging waned and the movement dispersed. The work here isn't easily digested and is often demanding of one's senses. Slow, churning drones collapse into clattering bells, wheels of noise rotate themselves to oblivion and disembodied flutes and voices accompany the procession on its way to absolution. Sound throbs as one writhing body, and then explodes into morsels of granulated flesh, purity found once again. [press-release]

In Meditarium -- "Les Fleurs Du Mal" -- CD-R -- €7
2002 Soulworm Editions, Worm XVII, (ltd. 300)
Another fine incarnation of the almighty Ukrainian artists of the First Human Ferro fame. In Meditarium has that easily recognisable sound, but makes a few steps deeper into dark atmospere of decadent joys of an alienated human being. Some ritualistic influnces are to be heard (say Archon Satani in the 'Virgin Birth' period), the rudimetary melodies fulfill the whole setting. The lyrics deal with consensual aspects of love and completion on the one hand, pain and serenity on the other. James Joyce's lines (taken form 'Giacomo Joyce') constitute the final comment and an invocative epitafium to this masterpiece... [press-release]
Inade -- "Samadhi State" -- CD -- €13
2006 Loki Foundation, Loki 41
A Japanese edition of collected studio works from the last years, recorded during several sessions and rehearsals at the Light Channel. Remixed, re-constructed and re-edited in 2005. This release was accompaning the Spring Equinoxe concert in Tokyo and is now available outside of Japan as well. "Samadhi State" is illuminating the space of reality and the luminous arcs of dreams. Samadhi is a over-conscious experience that lies beyond waking, dreaming, and deep sleep. The realisation made in Samadhi is numinous realisation. A perfect condition in vigil, a condition of absolute consciousness. It is the final goal of everything and the highest form of self-possession, in the sense of collecting all the faculties of the constitution towards reaching union or quasi-union, long or short in time as the case may be, with the divine-spiritualЕ Life in the spirit is not fading. If the restrictions of the empirical being are exceeded, the universal life is intensified. The life becomes cosmical and even hypercosmical. The Samadhi State is neither guards nor dreams it is the fourth dimension, where the infinite eternity prevails. [press-release]

A place where nuclear radiations colour the sky with green clouds, mutating vegetation suffocates the sun and asphyxiating miasms coming from abandoned toxic wastes endanger life......... LUASA RAELON is definitely one of the most interesting realities of US dark ambient/death industrial scene, combining low-rumbling drones with extemporaneous noise bursts to create a pretty personal & recognizable sound. This poison city IS a terrible place, trust me..... [press-release]

Lull -- "Like a Slow River" -- CD -- €13
2008 Glacial Movements, GM004
After a long period of silence, Glacial Movements Records is glad to announce you the return of the most important representative of ambient isolationist music ever: the wonderful English artist Mick J. Harris aka LULL (Scorn, Painkiller, Napalm Death).Unquestionable genius of the last century's second half European music and point of reference about the rising isolationist aesthetics, being on the same wavelength as post-rock last scenaries... "Like a slow river" it's a work characterized by sharp and minimal atmospheres but also dark, cold and huge such as big bodies of ice which slowly move carried by an endless river. The five compositions of "Like a slow river" reach the high expectations of the previous works such as "Cold Summer", "Continue" and the "Murder Ballads" trilogy with Martin Bates. With no doubt, this is the coldest and darkest work ever composed by this pioneer of industrial-ambient music. You all will be led to the oblivion of your existence....the freezing darkness of these glacial night is going to come down on your bodies and minds....you'll fall in your deepest sleep with the far echo of glacial runnings....the way to eternity is in front of you.... Nilsen, BJ -- "Fade to White" -- CD -- €12
2005 Touch, TO:65
Benny Nilsen writes: "'Fade To White' contains material from the making of 3 pieces which were created within a different season and then edited, re-arranged and re-mixed in the summer of 2004. 6 pieces contain outdoor field recordings from travels in mainly central europe in 2003 [Gdansk/Poland, Narva/Estonia, Sarajevo/Serbia Herzegovina, Arad/Romania, Trieste/Italy], and static indoor recordings from 2004 Stockholm/Sweden, Brussels/Belgium, Amsterdam/Netherlands, Vienna/Austria, Geneva/Switzerland. I used acoustic and electrical instruments recorded in open spaces picking up the natural ambience, blending those with environmental sounds of nature and then arranged it in the computer, creating dynamic layers of sound that feed from one another." November Növelet is more calm and romantic side of Haus Arafna, most of texts and vocals belong to the female part of the duet. Detached, beautiful and blameless as an ice sculpture music which simply has no analogues.

November Novelet -- "Magic" -- CD -- €15
2007 Galakthorrö 019
This magically-charged jewel of electronic music consists of twelve new songs. The analogue foundation combines with electric vibraphone and 8-bit surrealism transformed into sound. Melancholic synthesiser melodies and the ethereal voice of Mrs. Arafna melt into a fragile beauty with emotional depth. Unpretentious and lost, a gripping experience. In spite of all this exploration of the depths, there is also the opportunity to roll up the carpet. Mr. and Mrs. Arafna have conjured up a few dance hits, which because of their minimalism and cultured morbid charm, should kick off the party mood for the creatures of the night. These contrast well with the slow pieces – tinged with a breath of experimentation, resulting in a many-facetted, and at the same time very balanced, Angst Pop album. The long time in waiting for the release of this new record will soon be forgotten in sheer listening pleasure. CD in de luxe matt finish gatefold digipac plus 16-page booklet incl. all lyrics. Predominance -- "Dark Stars Unfolding" -- 2 CD -- €17
LOKI Foundation, LOKI40
Arisen from the fields of white ashes and bathed in tears of the world's genocidal slavery Predominance started 1995 to drown in the ruins of an unconcious mind. The evolution of Gerd Zaunig's project was mystified by the leaming beauty of a silver ship and ended illuminated at the threshold to astral gates on nocturnal skies. This "Dark Stars Unfolding" is an essential journey through the mind of the south saturn delta into the polar stargate. The circle of the four symbols is closed and the work of Predominance will remain in the ungained gorge of a swelling universe... After nearly 10 years of activity and with just three regular albums in this decade Gerd Zaunig placed with Predominance one of the main pillars in the wide area of dark ambient music. The unique sound of Predominance combines dense and atmospherical soundscultures with symphonic structures, pulsating rhythms and visionary-majestic vocals. This double album now marks the final release of Predominance as the project already ended in 2003. Devided into 2 parts the Disc One: ARCHIVUM contains selected tracks from the first tape (White Ashes), the first LP (Obliteration), various compilation tracks and unreleased material. Disc Two: LIVE collects high quality live recordings from the whole period of activity and includes all the outstanding vocal tracks for what Predominance was especially known for. [press-release]

Psychonaut 75 -- "Hellmachine" -- CD -- €12
2005 Memento Mori, MORI 19
New studio album from Michael Ford (VALEFOR, BLACK FUNERAL). Psychonaut 75 has returned with "Hellmachine", an electro-industrial exploration of the imagery of the Adversary and the union of technology and apocalyptic desire. "Hellmachine" explores various elements of dark electronic music, aggressive and pounding beats blending with Arabic music arrangements, voices and human bones recorded within the music. "Hellmachine" is indeed a new type of ritual, but a journey into the modern apocalyptic depths of our collective psyche. 11 new tracks recorded with Michael Ford, Lux Ferro and Dana Dark. Runau, Karl -- "Beyond Frequencies" -- CD -- €15
1999 Galakthorrö 010
One of the possible associations which come to mind when listening to this CD - this is an engineer-physicist in deep dissociative trip, with exfoliated perception of the world, communicating with his analogue synthesizers under impression of formerly heard early Kraftwerk recordings. Completely abnormal music - highest recommendations.

Skrol -- "Dances And Marches For Orphan Age" -- CD -- €12
Dagaz Music, DM 001
Surfacing somewhere between the harsh attacks of In Slaughter Natives and the charisma of The Moon Lay Hidden...'s feminine element, Skrol's majestic and uncompromising music is based on contemporary Classical music's orchestral and melodic signatures, recreated in the depths of industrial ambient and therein raped by noises and sounds of modern technology. This third album is based on a more volcanic and martial conception than their previous works, which have appeared on labels such as Loki Foundation or Membrum Debile Propaganda. [label info]
Stratvm Terror -- "Fixation" -- CD -- €12
2005 Old Europa Cafe, OECD 072
New CD of collaboration project of Peter Andersson and Tobias Larsson contains old material from 1998-99, 2 new tracks, one track from "Death Odors II" compilation published by Slaughter Productions in 1997 and one live recorded track. Although the album doesn't sound like a collection of separate pieces and has it's own atmosphere. Sometimes the sound blurres in sombre fog, sometimes condences in brutal harsh tension, in general, great death industrial album.
Subliminal -- "Coping" -- CD -- €15
2006 Galakthorrö 018
Pure terror! With his new album Albert Fisch has created such an impressive inferno of hate that hearing it warms the cockles of the heart! Violent analog electronic and machine noise is skillfully structured by the use of pulsating bass frequencies and aggressive vocal performances. The combination of all these elements culminate in a mighty shockwave that just surges off straight into the central nervous system. Powerelectronics at its best, uncompromising, dirty and trigger-happy! The theme "coping" forms the theoretic and emotional foundation, inspiring and evoking ideas, both acoustic and visual. Since the debut album Gracebudd, the development has continued. Those who appreciated Subliminals' contribution to the Kosmoloko sampler will find Coping a particularly successful follow-up experience. For anyone who wants to re-adjust his hate-wavelengths one more time, here is the right tool for the job. [press-release]

Troum -- "Eald-Ge-Streon / Abhijna" -- 2 CD -- €18
2009 Beta-lactam Ring Records, mt181/183, (ltd. 500)
CD plus the bonus album "Abhijna" issued in an edition of 500 copies in a full color deluxe gatefold book bound cd case. Design, layout and artwork by Stephen O'Malley. Welcome to the Thunderdome. Troum’s bone-cracking reverberations respirate with such ferocity that all non-Troum molecules are blown away. Eald-Ge-Streon is a massive, rising beauty. It is a great becoming, and we are nothing but an ant in the afterbirth. Troum has set its controls beyond the heart of the Sunn. The pulsating inferno of these 7 drone concertos may require an insurance adjuster, but what a lovely way to burn. It is in your nature to do one thing correctly. Before Troum, you rightly tremble. But fear is not what you owe Troum. You owe Troum awe! [press-release]

Vava Kitora (Sachiko & Yama-Akago) -- "Prithivi Mandragoire" -- CD-R -- €7
Deserted Factory, DF022, (ltd. 200)
Japanese Vava Kitora consists of members Sachiko and Yama-akago. I am used to hearing noise, or basically anything electronic, experimental or extreme coming from Japan. Vava Kitora, however, is something completely different and very interesting, falling outside any established genres. Medieval woodcuts and mandrake roots seem to be the theme here, and it is very interesting to hear two Japanese women interpreting European cultural history. Musically this could be described as some kind of minimalist ethereal experimentalism. Faint female voices are in the main role, harmonic at first, but growing ever more dissonant and eerie as the album progresses, culminating in a very I.Corax-like spectral flow at the end. Chimes, bells and strings are used sparingly. All in this is an extremely original piece, which reminds partially of Caul, partially of electroacoustic experimentalism, yet is a completely personal thing (also distinctly Japanese). However, in Prithivi Mandragorie the down sides of minimalism also come out: the sound is very thin and clinical, and the sound scale concentrating too much into the high end strengthens this impression. If one can get over the thin sound Prithivi Mandragorie is a successfull personal concept to say the least, and worth heating for those who are looking for something innovative and beautiful. W.A.R. (Projectile of the Simon) -- "Symphony #1" -- CD -- €7
2003 RZM Records, 001/03
Projectile W.A.R. is a blind movie in military march rhythm where main musical instruments are the implements of hot murder: MG-34 & 42, MP-38, 98-K, FLAK-41, etc. Mortars and artillery are alternated with sonorous ricochets against antitank blocks and fortifications. Soul freezing evacuation in hospital train under the enemy's cross-fire, tedious peripeteias of battle till the last shell turn into joy of long-awaited victory. In the history of music such experiments are known in Europe since 18th century. At that time orchestra sounded to the accompaniment of artillery. There was an interesting technique of teaching in Bad Tolz SS officers training school. They were took out to the range where they had to define by ear the type of the arms, quantity and place of dislocation of the enemy and take appropriate measures on it. W.A.R.ning: during the concerts or CD listening it's possible to feel such side effects as aggressiveness and desire to entrench yourself deeply. People occupied with potentially dangerous activities should be careful. These actions intensify with simultaneous alcohol drinking. [label info]

Winquist Virtanen -- "All Hope Is Gone" -- CD-R -- €7
2001 Soulworm Editions, Worm XIV, (ltd. 250)
Known of the brilliant harsh noise experimentations, this mysterious Swedish duo surprises us by their actual interest to minimal dark ambience works. Winquist Virtanen -- "Dead Last" -- CD-R -- €7
2002 Soulworm Editions, Worm XXXIII, (ltd. 100)
Bleak. The word might have been overused, but this new album from Swedens Winquist Virtanen entitled Dead Last is the very definition of that word. Some call it dark ambient, some call it isolationism and some call it the soundtrack of hopelessness, but regardless of which description you deem most fitting, this album is bound to send you looking for the razor blades and erase what little remains of your will to live. "Dead Last" follows in the steps of its predecessor "All Hope Is Gone" with it's combination of dark, slowly evolving drones and the cold reverberations of metal against metal, but takes it one step futher to an even colder, more desolate domain of absolute darkness. Through the course of its 50 minute duration it offers no escape, no relenting and no hope, only desperation, fear and hopelessness. [press-release]
