Ritual. Alexey Tegin's project "Gyer" is the first recording of the project, which later became known as PHURPA. Alexey Tegin is a participant, creator, author and practitioner. His musical experiments began with industrial hobbies, where the author was interested in the sound of material bodies, and non-musical instruments: iron sheets, stones, pipes, wires, piezoelectric sensors. The musician produced sounds "which are contained somewhere deep in matter... attracted by the charm of natural sounds... not harmonious, in the usual sense of the word... not connected in the composition...". In the future, the modern "industrial" sound chaos settled on the Tibetan, Bon musical tradition. Alexey Tegin began to select instruments, notes and sound according to the "Bon vibration". Where the sensual, physiological and mental experience of sound as such is important. Like a mantra, the sound exists on its own. But what Alexey does is different from singing mantras. The mantra is rational, contains meaning, but the main thing is the sound itself and its impact on us. Original rituals were recorded for this disc, in one composition the ancient text is set to singing, and several compositions are instrumental... Tibetan instruments: cymbals (rol-mo), singing bowls, bronze plates, huge pipes (dung-chen), and a kind of oboe (rgya-gling), small drums (damaru), damaru, bells, home-made pipes, drums, iron sheets, strings stretched over iron sheets. A lot of instruments, unusual to the eye and ear, exotically beautiful and not always clear in their function. It becomes audible, visible and palpable by the skin that which tempered music cannot give to the usual ear - cold wind, waterfalls, and dazzling sunlight. [label info]

Arnau Sala’s Exoteric Continent project began in 2010, and allows him to experiment with structured and sequenced abstract sounds. Sala connects the dots between dub and deep techno, to musique concrete, ambient, and the electro acoustic sounds of Bernard Parmigiani in unusual new ways – and he does not shy away from political commentary and social context. After his material reached Dominick Fernow, the Hospital Productions maverick released the Primera Norma EP and the Referendum LP, and the two have become regular accomplices. While Sala has also released on Opal Tapes, Second Sleep and Silvox Recordings, he also manages to run his own label, Anòmia. Power Electronics. So who is Military Position? Well, for starters, the project hails from Australia and is primarily associated (for cassette releases) with the excellent, Trapdoor Tapes. In existence since 2011, the act consists of one sole member, Harriet Kate Morgan... Today we're talking about Military Position's third cassette release titled, Black Noise (Trapdoor Tapes 2016). The first thing you will probably notice (if you're an old-school industrial nerd like myself) is the sound. It is raw, unpolished and effective - like it should be! Not that the polished, high-tech stuff is all bad, but the sound of Military Position just REALLY proves it's genuineness. It would be completely accurate to compare it to Throbbing Gristle, Sleep Chamber (including a cover of Sleep Chamber's "Babes of Babylon"), Master/Slave Relationship and Anenzaphalia for starters. It's industrial like mom made it, with all the right aesthetic ingredients as well. So is Military Position just following the recipe? Absolutely not!.. Morgan's experimental, progressive approach is all in the recordings. Her sound masterfully jumps from one murky style to the next. From punishing death-industrial, throbbing post-punk, cold electronics and sexual whip slashing death-disco! Black Noise is a heavily evolved, claustrophobic industrial-noise experience, with lots of raw bricks of brutal density! To top things off, the album's cover art shows an artsy photo of a young Suzie Quatro, your all time favorite leatherclad glam/disco-queen... Black Noise is another great release from one of the best new artists practicing in the post-industrial/noise genre(s). Trapdoor Tapes also continues to be one of the most impressive cassette labels not enough people are talking about. As a fan I REALLY like her older stuff, but heck... this shit is getting better! Experimental / Sound Collage. I met the Greek sound experimentalist Yorgos Mizi in Lebanon in 2019. MIZI performed that evening at the Irtijal experimental music festival as part of the Trigger Happy quartet, a group that includes three Yorgoses and one Manthos. It was a daring, incomparable concert! The band's setup included hundreds of sounding items - from music boxes and clockwork machines to homemade turntables and ringing alarm clocks. Complement this wow-sound with Yorgos Stavridis’ drum hooks and you have got a crazy collage of free jazz, plunderphonics, musique concrete and rock-and-roll. I haven't experienced such a drive for a long time! The next day, we were already walking with the whole band around Beirut, and in the dead of night we stumbled upon Rabih Beahni’s heroic DJ-set. Some time later, I contacted Yorgos, and he sent me the album that you are holding in your hands. Listening to the album's deep yet insanely collaged sound, I began to explore MIZI's creative method. Yorgos creates his music by hacking and dissecting old vinyl and cassette players, manipulating tape and deforming digital files. "Music Behind Music" is an album-journey through the deepest nooks and crannies of the playback medium and its content: from the Athens Polytechnic University, besieged by the Greek army in November 1973, to the dark spaces and chiming bells of the Alexander Nevsky Cathedral in Sofia. This is a collection of three distinct pieces exploring the hidden sounds, stories, sonic fragments, mechanisms and artifacts of the storage and playback medium. This hidden assemblage of sonic events is recomposed by MIZI in an attempt to shed some light on the “Music Behind Music”. [label info]

They plotted their trajectories slowly, to the steady swaying of giant palm leaves, to the creeping sound of the surf, the rustle of pebbles in the pools, and the songs of crickets. It would seem that there is nothing more magical, but all this was just a decoration for harmony even more subtle and elegant. It seemed to permeate everything with itself and was either a pattern that weaves everything into a single whole, or some kind of sound wave that develops into an unpretentious, but endlessly enchanting melody... A melody without beginning and end, growing as if from the noise of the film itself on which it was once recorded. Or were they memories of something else, simply washed away like patterns of sand in a tidal wave? However, it does not matter - after all, while this music sounded, the world around seemed to soften, the passage of time slowed down, and its flow no longer turned one's head. Abstract / Minimal / Lo-Fi. A strange soundtrack to a strange book about a very strange graffiti crew. Although its members do not consider themselves a crew, and this is, perhaps, more precise. NYOK is about how not to do it, how it's not allowed and why are you doing it at all? Narrators of outskirt ballads with fire extinguishers and buckets of facade paint in their hands do everything in defiance, or maybe out of spite, but it turns out for joy. Even sometimes it’s embarrassing that you can lay like that, like nobody knows who. The punks performing wild fonts to the rave on their 20th birthday released a book about their fairy tales in the 2021 and ordered the soundtrack accordingly. Immersion to the origins, from the upper layers to the depths, to the first tricks, which, in a strange way, have already become classics. A recording with a running time of 43 minutes on each side is like a collage of a string of sounds surrounding and accompanying. Foggy keys and percussion synths with sometimes shuffling, sometimes groaning claps and all this in numerous reflections as if on water surface - into trees, into walls, into cellars... The cassettes are generously primed with a white balloon during Easter at dachas near Moscow. And Andrey Candiboy drew a piece of the pie (probably) for NYOK on all cassettes at once. What is lo-fi as definition of sound of post-industrial projects? Usually this means that frequency spectrum is much wider than possible perceiving range, and this leads to "flat" inexpressive sound. But not with Hum. Formally the project stays within the borders of lo-fi with rather "old" kind of sound, but it's so blameless and atmospheric that such masters like Maeror Tri or Zoviet France come to mind. The disc opens with wheezing composition which dissolves in aerial emptiness of the second track which in it's turn changes with shimmering crackling soundscapes of the final piece. Classic drone. The trio owes its roots to another Max’s project - the Pustozwet ensemble. In its past Pustozwet played freejazz (for example, take a look at the “Bang Bang” album from 2011), but over time it has shifted into the territory of measured and cold “contemporary”, where it currently stays. Noise / Cut-Up / Sound Collage. NOISESMETANA is a mythical project. According to the apt expression of one of those interested, "only those who read old noise fanzines from the 90s know about NOISESMETANA." For the first time the name was found in the catalog of the St. Petersburg label "One Touch" 10-15 years ago. After asking Philip Wolokitin (as the person behind One Touch), I learned that “yes, there really was such a project”, “it was quite a long time ago” and “contact with the author was lost”. A dozen years later, thanks to Alex Alexeev, a cassette with a demo of this project fell into my hands and later I managed to communicate with the author. As it turned out, it all started in the first half of the 90s, in the city of Bryansk - after the author got acquainted with the 7" by AUDIOSTENCH / SATANIC DEATH and the DISPHAGIA band of the Alexeev brothers (SOI tapes). After some time (namely in 1995) Sergei himself decided to try his hand in the field of harshnoise and in 1996 released a demo record "Space 43" on his own label Miasma tapes. This was followed by both standalone releases and splits with various noise projects - among which there were no less mythical St. Petersburg TALONOV NET, Canadian DAN-CHARGE with "Humpty Dumpty", ERIK DISORDER with "A cunt with a bowl of reefer in it" and the aforementioned Alexeev brothers with LLG and WEAK ANAL MUSCLE. In addition to Smetana, Sergey organized several more projects - THREE CRIPPLE FREAKS (harshnoise), G.N.P (lofi / shitcore), also the Miasma tapes label is mutating into the publishing house Oral Diarrhea tapes (there were about 20-23 releases in total), releasing several more splits with LLG and Barnaul-based project LANAKROMOLEB. One of the early projects by ALEXANDER LEBEDEV-FRONTOV (LINIJA MASS, VEPRISUICIDA, VETROPHONIA, etc.). "Thirty minutes of sound terror and hysteria, various variants of which under various names have been being recorded and stubbornly, obtusely and cheerly distributed by the Leningrad-based activist of the "underground" culture, musical follower of Pol Pot tradition and an aesthet A. LEBEDEV-FRONTS (ex "LINIJA MASS" and "DEAD HIPPIES"). In psychiatry, the "hypnotic phase" is a transitional state from the normal to the absolute total delirium. Initially having the deepest mystical basis, the present work revealed its subconscious & visionary character with the passage of time, for its recording was completed on August 18, 1991; the day before the start of the State Committee on the State of Emergency and the fateful victory of "the forces of progress and reason." It reflects the anticipation of the next stage after the hypnotic phase of the development of the social organism - the stage of complete delirium. Reductio Ad Absurdum is one of the most interesting and original noise projects emerged from the post-Soviet Russia. After some vinyl releases Sonne Hagal, a neo-folk formation from Germany, now delivers its first regular album. And Sonne Hagal is immediately promoted to the highest division! They have created twelve neo-folk pearls, that compete with the best acts in this field. The first song, 'Memory, Hither Come', directly has a lot of atmosphere, through the warm voice and the strings, reminding me of OF THE WAND AND THE MOON. Speaking of this Danish act, Kim Larsen has added guitar and vocals to the excellent track 'Raidho', a bit further on the album. Andreas Ritter of Forseti also contributes to two tracks of "Helfahrt", with vocals and his typical accordeon. Acoustic guitars, fine strings and pleasant vocals are the main musical ingredients. Sonne Hagal plays a traditional style of traditional neo-folk. 'Song of experience' for example, reminds of classic Death in June. But the music on this album never sounds boring or stale. Therefore the sound is too fresh and the melodies too good. There is also a good variation of uptempo ("Midwinternight', 'Futhark') and slow ('Song of Innocence', 'Raidho') songs on the album. He couldn't imagine life without creativity, having truly healing force, being able to bring up a personality, giving answers to the essence of things. Hesse wrote about that in his last philosophical surrealistic novel "The Glass Bead Game", in which an order of intellectuals invents the universal art influenced by Buddhism and mathematics in addition to music. Like in the aesthetics of Romanticism, kept up by the German classic, the idea of progress and civilization is opposed by returning of a human to the roots of nature, so in the music of T-WALD one can hear quiet whisperings of wildlife spirits, always having a powerful impact on the ability to create. The album touches the key points of the writer's world of imagery. Deliberately quiet recording prepares the listener for the attentive contemplative mood, in which he would open again and again the faery grottos inviting to take a rest in each of them, being imbued by the magic. Among those musicians who have read of tons of heroic fantasy books and spent hours listening to the music of Varg and Summoning and then rushed to torture guitars and synthesizers creating "inspired epic music", Alexander Wieser and his Uruk-Hai are the most pleasant to me, being a usual listener. He manages to create really epic compositions imbued with the spirit of ancient tales, soaked in spirit of bloody battles or beauty of fairy worlds where the dreamy author's nature tries to get with the help of rich fantasy. "Northern Lights" is a reissue of a cassette from 2005, with excluded track "Moria" (caused by of lack of space) and new bonus tracks instead old ones. This album material perfectly shows the essence of Wieser's music. On the one hand, it is black metal rawness and rage of Burzum (although the instrumental cover-version sounds very peaceful), on another - fantasy-like "otherworldness" of Enya (whose track "May It Be" is sung by some Hildr Valkyrie good in everything except for the fact that she is far from being Enya, and it speaks for itself)... When many adherents of "black ambient" play on two-three synth keys, Wieser manages to compose simple but heart-stirring electronic symphonies...
