CDs & CD-Rs

Ab Intra -- "Henosis I-V" -- CD -- €10
2016 Zoharum, ZOHAR 132-2, (ltd. 300)
Ambient / Drone. A bit more than two years after the two-disc split with 1000Schoen (ZOHAR 070-2), Ab Intra is back with a new album. After two previous successful ventures entitled "Aura Imaginalis" (ZOHAR 006-2) and "Supremus" (ZOHAR 026-2) the new release is a record of its research in the field of music. "HENOSIS" (Greek for unity, unification) is a scene of a suggestive sonic travel; a travel uniting opposites at different symbolic levels. The sounds on the album are an attempt to reflect the transforming process expressed through color, intensity and frequency. In this sense, the album is a conceptual whole strongly interacting with the imagination of the audience. The album released in a digipak is strictly limited to 300 copies. [label info]

Aethere -- "In Coma" -- CD -- €10
2009 Rage In Eden, RAGE 61, (ltd. 500)
"In Coma" is the last work of Aethere, an act of Emanuele Ratti from Milan who in the last 4 years brought to perfection his dark ambient - space music hybrid, starting from a Cold Meat Industry style and finishing with sophisticated personal music, binding dilated atmosphere, typical for space music, with the more compact, oppressive style, characteristic for swedish masters. “In coma” is the end of Aethere, an album created on the really feeble equilibrium between life and death: the EEG sound walks through the six tracks until the acme of the mass-sounds. When the EEG becomes a flat line, Aethere dies. 6 tracks, 49 minutes, 3 panel glossy digipack, limited to 500 copies. [label info]

Aethere -- "The Long Dark Tea - Time Of The Soul" -- CD -- €10
2007 War Office Propaganda, WOP 45
Third full lenght album in 3 years from Aethere. Emanuale Ratti, a man behind Aethere have started to compose music already few years ago, trying to mix '70s space music with dark ambient in the vein of early Cold Meat Industry. Now Aethere has arrived with a perfect balance of old space music and ambient in the classic vein of Robert Rich & Alio Die, with a strong tones of oppressive & depressive feelings, rather far from old Cold Meat school influences. 6 tracks, 50 minutes, CD in digipack. Analog Angel -- "Dischord" -- CD -- €10
2009 Rage In Eden, RAGE 71
80's analog electronica; today's digital technology; blended together for an up to date sound. This is what the headline banner of www.Analog-Angel.com states - let's see!! The new album - DISCHORD - is released by RAGE in EDEN records on 30th November and is the debut album of this three piece, electronic band from Glasgow, Scotland. For anyone that has not heard of Analog Angel; they are not a boy band by any means. They are of an age where they can remember the 80's in full, vivid, 3-D glory and the songs on DISCHORD tell some of the story from the glorious 80's. 80's electronica? There is certainly more than a hint of 80's electronica on DISCHORD. Some of the basslines are straight out of the yearbooks 80-85!! Some of the sounds are pure analogue beauty; full of filter sweeps that could smash windows!! Up to date technology? - that box is ticked too. There are digital synths on the album; of that there is no doubt but they have been tweeked to within an inch of their lives! DISCHORD has been put together using some sort of digital interface but ANALOG ANGEL have tried to be a bit different from all the others in this genre and they have actually played some of the parts live and not quantized the result. This results in a less clinical sound with a bit more warmth than you would normally expect from an all electronic band. An up to date sound? They have managed to revisit the 80's, picked all that is good, timewarped back to 2009 and put together DISCHORD. [label info]

Bianchi, Maurizio -- "Elegietroniche" -- CD -- €10
2016 4iB Records, 4iB CD/0114/020, (ltd. 200)
Elegietroniche displays the softer phase of MB’s long journey of musical experimentation with a focus on the spiritual themes of suffering and deliverance. This second chapter sees him moving away from the earlier stages of chaotic electronic incongruity into a religious and philosophical environment. The 5 tracks in this album revolve around a meditative soundscape of calming ambience, laden with distant church bells and choral chants layered heavily with the hum and drone of melancholy and desolation. [label info]

Bianchi, Maurizio & Roadside Picnic -- "Dictatorship Of Dead Labour" -- CD -- €10
2014 4iB Records, 4iB CD/0114/006, (ltd. 250)
A collaborative release that features the imaginative efforts of Justin Wiggan’s (Birmingham) solo noise project Roadside Picnic, and Maurizio Bianchi (M.B.), an Italian pioneer of industrial music. This intriguing project marries Wiggan’s immersed expedition of field recording, samples, treated loops and drones, manifested through the calming nature of Maurizio Bianchi’s almost ambient soundscapes. Minimal layers of noise, radio frequencies, rhythmic recitals, textural electronic interference, abrasive gut-wrenching white noise, organic loops, harsh industrial, finishing with ambient trance-like aural echo. The final epiphany is how the line between art and music gets distorted through deeper exploration and discovery of space and void, demonstrating the disunion of parameters between sound and silence, everything and nothing. Celer & Dirk Serries -- "Background Curtain" -- CD -- €10
2016 Zoharum, ZOHAR 129-2, (ltd. 300)
Ambient / Drone. We are proud to present the collaborative album of two big names in the experimental scene. Four years in the making, “Background Curtain” is a collaboration between the legend of the ambient underground Dirk Serries (otherwise known as Fear Falls Burning, and earlier as Vidna Obmana) and Will Long, dynamically developing his style for over 10 years, known primarily from the project Celer... “In 2012, after trading LPs, I sent Dirk a long track of collaged, stretched tape pieces to see if it was something he could work with. […] this particular set of recordings seemed puzzling to me, and unworkable. […] Later, after a tour (with Mono) he actually sent me some tracks that he had made while listening to the piece […] Out of the blue, maybe a year later, I went back and listened to our tracks, having some distance for my ears, and had an idea. Using the original track that I sent Dirk at the very beginning as a sound source, I shaped it exactly like Dirk’s responding source file – the musical colour and frequencies were the same, but the effects and enveloping was triggered by the waves of Dirk’s track. […] It may be hard to hear the two sides, but it’s really built by the background curtain, and even if you can’t hear it’s place, it’s definitely there. Where does one thing begin and another end? Maybe you can hear it?..” The album is released in a 3-panel ecopak in a strictly limited edition of 300 copies. The cover is designed by Rutger Zuydervelt (Machinefabriek) based on the photograph by Will Long (Celer). [label info]

Compulsive Shopping Disorder -- "In The Cube" -- CD -- €10
2008 Rage In Eden, RAGE 63
Bold and original arrangements, dense and oppresive electronic sounds, aggressive industrial phrases, melancholic melodies and cold, impassive voice. Where the darkness and music become to one, COMPULSIVE SHOPPING DISORDER is alone with you. So at last there is a chance to slow down, stay for a while, look at the mirror and open themselves. Touching your own weaknesses you get back your sensitivity, lost in depression of life. Listen to this musical diary of everyday fears and find yourself between words setting modern world a challenge. This is a testimony filled with gloomy romanticism of Kirlian Camera, Coil's sonic sadness and energetic clamour of Skinny Puppy. Listen on minimal level, at night's solitude. 7 tracks, 52 minutes, 3-pannel digipack. [label info]

Different State -- "More than Music / It Cleans My Wounds" -- 2 CD -- €14
2017 Zoharum, ZOHAR 139-2, (ltd. 300)
Different State is the band that once stepped on the indigenous industrial scene. They caused a lot of stir with their first releases and gigs of the character of an art happening. Over the course of more than 20 years of their activity, their line-up has changed and their style as well. From the massive industrial metal through illbient structures and dub motives to esoteric electronica. Something that is a common denominator for all these sounds is their quality and a certain kind of uniqueness, an unspecified element that shows that the sounds came from the hands of Marek Marchoff and his companions. At the beginning of the noughties, during the CDR boom, two excellent albums were released. They were "More than Music" (Requiem Records, 2005) and "It Cleans My Wounds" (0v0 Art Records, 2006). Unfortunately, over the years, those strictly limited albums began to oxidize and, with this process, music could have been forgotten. Therefore, we decided to reissue these two materials on CDs to re-show and consolidate these albums, for new listeners and for collectors who are already left with only covers for earlier editions. The CDs are housed in gatefold vinyl replica sleeve and the album is strictly limited to 300 copies. [label info]

Dilloway, Aaron / Kevin Drumm -- "I Drink Your Skin" -- CD -- €10
2002/2013 Hanson Records, HN260, (ltd. 500)
"Reissue of 2001 recording, originally released on cassette by AMERICAN TAPES. After discussing a collaboration w/ Kevin during a trip to Chicago, I found a cassette of unreleased material of myself messing with Renaissance (the band) 8-track loops on the floor of my car and handed it over. A couple days later Kevin sent me a mini-disc of his own unreleased material. The disc was caked in spilled coffee or something… I managed to clean it enough to get a few seconds of sounds from it here and there to make 8-track tape loops of. One track myself using Drumm sound sources, and one track Drumm using Dilloway sound sources." -- Aaron Dilloway. Released as a CD in a special poly case, edition of 500 copies.

Docetism / Ghosts Of Breslau / Ixora -- "Circuit Intégré Volume 2 - A Compilation of Contemporary Electronica" -- CD -- €10
2017 Zoharum, ZOHAR 137-2, (ltd. 400)
"Circuit Intégré" is a Zoharum series, modeled after Philips' "Prospective 21e Siècle" released at the turn of the 1960s and 1970s. Our new series presents the most interesting young projects working in the the field of broadly-defined electronic music. Each part will contain recordings of three different projects. In the second part the following projects participated: Docetism, Ghosts of Breslau and Ixora... Docetism is an alias Maciej Banasik, who previously worked as Atum, Contemptus Mundi and Topografia, which explored the terrain of dark ambient, drone and field recordings. Operating since 2012 Docetism penetrates areas closer to ambient dub. In addition to numerous net publications, the project has four physical releses: a CD album "Endura" (Bunkier Productions, 2012), cassette "Askesis" (BLWBCK, 2013) and "Roots" (Rasputia, 2015) and an EP "Breaking the Circle of Life" (Tavern Eightieth, 2015)... Ghosts of Breslau is the longest running of the projects presented here. It has been around since 2001. At the early stage it focused on creating soundscapes evoking the spirit of the difficult history of their city, Wrocław. Currently, it is closer to drone structures. Such atmospherics can be found on his last album, "Man with the Green Gloves" (BDTA, 2016)... The last of the projects here is Ixora, that is the combined forces of Gaap Kvlt and Micromelancolié. The characteristic features of the plant called ixora include evergreen shrubs and magnificent inflorescences. The two musicians think about their music in a similar manner. You can hear echoes of both ambient drone and experimental techno in their tracks. They have their debut cassette issued under the banner of Pointless Geometry label. [press-release]

Elggren, Leif -- "Talking To A Dead Queen" -- CD -- €10
1996 Fylkingen Records, fycd 1008
"On one hand it is a drone, and it's a really fantastic drone. It's a copper pipe on a pillar driven by it's own amplification - it's a fantastic sound. The other part is a reading of an autopsy of a Dutch queen when she dies. It's an old autopsy so it's got this great formality: it talks about the 'colouration' of the skin. The poetry is in the age of the language..." [Graham Lewis]

Expo 70 -- "Live In The Pit KFJC 89.7 FM" -- 2 CD -- €14
2017 Zoharum, ZOHAR 136-2, (ltd. 500)
Space Rock / Drone / Experimental. Expo 70 is turning into one of the leading projects related to Zoharum. Until now we have already released three albums of this project. The first one was the new album "Frozen Living Elements" containing three space-rock improvisations performed by a trio led by Justin Wright. Along with this album Zoharum released the reissue of "Corridors to Infinity" expanded with an bonus disc. This double album is almost two hours long of organ-based recordings inspired by krautrock. The third one is "Solar Drifting", a compilation of recordings from smaller formats, showing the project in shorter, more concise forms. The fourth position of Expo 70 in Zoharum catalogue is the double album "Live in the Pit-KFJC 89.7FM". It collects two concerts, which were held in California radio KFJC in 2008 and in 2010, that were separately released, in tiny editions. These are two improvised suites played with minimal means. Hypnotic, lazy guitar sounds supported with rudimentary drum machine parts are the perfect soundtrack for the pilots of spaceships, even if they are imaginary. Somewhere far away in the background you can hear the echoes of the concert side of Pink Floyd's "Ummagumma", "Atem" by Tangerine Dream, "Trip Flip Out-Meditation" by Zweistein or "Impressionen '71" by Damenbart. The CDs are housed in gatefold sleeve in the vein of Japanese-style vinyl replica and is strictly limited to 500 copies. [label info]

Femeheim -- "Dominium Terrae" -- CD -- €10
2014 Death Continues Records, DCRCD006, (ltd. 200)
Second album from Berlin's Femeheim. "Total early BDN / CMI / Slaughter Prod. death industrial worship going on here, with cold, noxious tones and ultra bleak frequencies that waft from a pit of misery and hopelessness. At times minimal and singular, other times more pulsating, antagonistic and heavy... brings back good memories and fills a niche that hasn't existed for sometime..." [Steinklang]

Free As Dead -- "Tombeau Vital" -- CD -- €10
2016 4iB Records, 4iB CD/1215/019, (ltd. 200)
Free As Dead is another project of prolific French Harsh Noise Wall artist Romain Perrot, who deviates from his other known projects like walled noise acts Vomir and guitar noise Falot. Free As Dead builds it’s disturbing ambience with harsh funeral organ noise, and together with the collaborative efforts of Andy Bolus (of Evil Moisture) Tombeau Vital creates an almost soundtrack-like horror story revolving around Perrot’s (pervasive) alter ego of a B-Grade masked monster and his doll captive. This is a conceptually heavy album that distinctively defines itself from Romain’s other projects from start to end. The 4 tracks take you on a crazy epic horror-tale filled with dramatic effects like squeals and squelches (from Andy Bolus) set against the background atmospheric ambience of wind and rain and crazy organ playing by a mad man. Staying true to Romain’s sarcastic and sick sense of humour, one can only expect that this epic aural journey will inevitably result in a tragic ending. [label info]

Gaap Kvlt -- "Jinn" -- CD -- €10
2016 Zoharum, ZOHAR 123-2, (ltd. 300)
Ambient / Dub / Experimental. Gaap Kvlt, a mysterious figure in the hood, returns to Zoharum. The second album of the project entitled “Jinn”, released less than two years after the debut “Void”, is the first full-length album Gaap Kvlt released on our label, although our cooperation started in 2015 on the occasion of the first volume of the 3-way split series “Circuit Intégré”. On “Jinn” Gaap Kvlt plunges in a little different territory than on its previous recordings. It is an exit from the depths of a dark cave into the sun-baked Moroccan deserts, hot during the day, very cold at night. The album consists of 9 compositions. The music there is electronics decorated with an oriental feel to it, slightly more modest than the Moorish mosaic that adorns the album cover. There is no shortage of field recordings and samples from northern Africa, slow, gliding rhythms and drones reminding of sandy, desert wind. ”Jinn” is housed in a 3-panel ecopak sleeve and is strictly limited to 300 copies. Genetic Transmission -- "s/t" -- CD -- €10
1997/2016 Zoharum, ZOHAR 130-2, (ltd. 200)
Musique Concrete / Sound Collage. As the first one in GT Archive Series, we release the debut material entitled simply "Genetic Transmission" released earlier on an OBUH tape in 1997. Now enriched and mastered by Tomasz Twardawa. It has been 20 years since its first release, but the recordings of sonic search still sound fresh and intriguing. We will find here compositions kept in the characteristic style of GT: harsh, metallic sounds, a mechanical structure, brut collages created using only analog sources and recorded in exactly the same manner - without the use of computers. In these dense structures, the artist concluded his entire manifesto, a declaration of his own research which has been developed consistently through his next sessions. "Genetic Transmission 1" is the starting point of your adventure with this project. This reissue is strictly limited to 200 copies. [label info]

Genetic Transmission -- "Chrzaszcz Brzmi W Trzcinie" -- CD -- €10
2006/2016 Zoharum, ZOHAR 131-2, (ltd. 200)
Musique Concrete / Sound Collage. The second in GT Series Archive is the album entitled "Chrząszcz brzmi w trzcinie" (A beetle buzzes in the reed - a Polish tounge twister), originally published on a CDR on Tochnit Aleph in 2006. In a short time it was sold out and practically until today the material has not been available in any other form. "Chrząszcz brzmi w trzcinie" is a recording of the session based on the most primal sound sources which are only arranged in a suitable structures so that they form a concise material; however, they remained unchanged and no post-production was applied to them. The album consists of 6 compositions, about 60 minutes of industrial sound space characteristic of the work of Genetic Transmission. This reissue is strictly limited to 200 copies. [label info]

2015 Freak Animal Records, Freak-CD-090
Freak Animal is proud to present possibly most challenging and disturbing of the Finnish noise creations: H.Ö.H.! All tapes of this project has been in very limited circulation, self published by artist. Freak Animal offers collection consisting Hidasälyinen, Signal, White Genocide tapes as well as unreleased material of same era collected on one full length CD!... H.Ö.H. material could be lumped somewhere near very earliest Consumer Electronics or radio noise recordings of John Duncan, but with further handmade primitivism and utmost broken and unprocessed radio-signals. Many way wonder what is the point of CD release of such a brute recordings, while others will see this as welcomed assault of truly disturbing and difficult noise rawness! [label info]

Haare -- "Regression" -- CD -- €10
2016 Freak Animal Records, Freak Animal CD 084
Freak Animal is proud to present new HAARE CD. On this CD, Haare goes forward to less expected direction. Offering 6 songs, where material may still be loosely connected to "drone", but far more into direction of industrial noise. Grim and distorted soundscapes, piercing feedback, buried distorted vocals and slowly drifting industrial waste manages to provide fresh new angle to extensive Haare discography! Sound is lo-fi, crude and filled with disturbing distortions and crackles and elements one could perhaps label as technical imperfections. From this Regression emerges new type of Haare recording. Hum Of The Druid -- "Trials" -- CD-R -- €7
2005 Barbituarian Media, BM03, (ltd. 76)
This is yet another in a string of quality releases from this excellent experimental noise project. Herein the material is still laid down using analog sources with no synths whatsoever, but these tracks certainly bring a harsher edge to Hum of the Druid's usual ambient approach. Make no mistake, there are still plenty of chilling dark ambient tones to be found, but there are also a lot of crispy distorted crunches and dense pulses of grating texture... The CD-R is housed in a black digipack with some abstract artwork cut out and glued to the front, and a clean looking insert placed inside for track titles and recording information. [Aversionline]

Jazkamer -- "Cover By Hair Stylistics" -- CD -- €10
2010 Pica Disk, PICA021
"Cover by Hair Stylstics" is the july edition of Jazkamer's ongoing 2010 monthly Compact Disc series. This month's album finds Hegre and Marhaug joined by Iver Sandøy playing noisecore. Noisecore is a crossover between grindcore and noise music. One could call it improvised grindcore, as its emphasis is on short bursts of blastbeat drumming backed by screaming vocals and heavily distorted guitar. Often the music is improvised on the spot. Early pioneers of noisecore were bands like Gerogerigegege, 7 Minutes of Nausea and Fear of God, and although the genre never flourished like grindcore, it nevertheless has lead a healthy underground life with bands like Sissy Spacek and October Revolution... Jazkamer ventured into noisecore territory on 2008's "Art Breaker" album (Smalltown Superjazzz), which featured 59 songs in mere 17 minutes. Many reviewers complained that 17 were even too much. Despite this reaction "Cover by Hair Stylstics" ups the ante with 129 songs in 20 minutes. Because of the Compact Disc-format's limited index ability the songs are presented as one continious track. Jazkamer also prefers the album to be experienced as a whole, rather than prominence given to individual songs... For Jazkamer's monthly 2010 series they have invited one different visual artist to contribute every month. The artwork of "Cover by Hair Stylistics" is by the Japanese actor, author and composer Masaya Nakahara. Nakahara is know for his musical work with projects like Hair Stylistics, Suicidal 10CC and Violent Onsen Geisha. On the front cover Nakarhara can be seen drawing the artwork used on the inside of the cover... "Cover by Hair Stylstics" was recorded during an excruciating two hours in Duper Studios in Bergen. Editing and mixing the material took even longer to complete and involved several coffee-breaks. Pica Disk hopes that Jazkamer fans across the world will enjoy "Cover by Hair Stylstics" for a long time. [press-release]

2010 Pica Disk, PICA017
Two men in a (large?) room, with a bunch of metal and two (or more?) bows at their disposal. Electronics? Not likely, but perhaps also not excluded entirely. I assume Hegre and Marhaug sit on the floor with their bows and play carefully the metal sheets, rods, pipes and what have you. Sometimes things end up being 'loud' (although to everything one has to turn the volume up quite a bit), but that's just the ringing of overtones. In my book this is noise too, but then of an entirely different nature. Not in the sense of just being 'loud', but in its approach to the non musical material at hand. In a way I'm reminded of 'Glass' by Sissy Spacek (see Vital Weekly 678), especially the second piece on there. The non-music approach marks this off as a noise release, but you should add 'intelligent' to it. [FdW, Vial Weekly]

Jupitter-Larsen, GX / A Week Of Kindness / Richard Ramirez -- "Acognitive Culture" -- CD -- €10
2015 4iB Records, 4iB CD/0915/018, (ltd. 200)
Acognitive Culture consists of 5-Parts featuring the collaborative inputs (and outputs) of 3 prolific American harsh noise experimentalists GX Jupitter-Larsen (of The Haters), A Week of Kindness (also known as Sean E. Matzus of Black Leather Jesus, among many others) and Richard Ramirez (namely of Werewolf Jerusalem and Black Leather Jesus). These 5 different sounding tracks start off with the gentle buildup of low-range vacuum-like hums that form the basic textural sound ambience. The overall electro-acoustic landscape gradually gets engulfed by the incessant build up of raw rhythmic drones with occasional minimalistic feedback noise and snippets of film dialogue. The unsettling intertwining of sonic dischord and all the nuances that they encompass reflect the true essence of each individual artist involved, which make this joining of creative minds a unique experience deeply rooted in sonic aestheticism. Kallee & The Lunar Trio -- "Nushtur" -- CD -- €10
2016 Zoharum, ZOHAR 119-2, (ltd. 300)
Dark Ambient. ‘Nushtur’ is a set of three compositions, of slightly somnambulistic character, delivered in the style of Noir Ambient. The triptych “Nox, Nox-Lunaris, Nox-Lux” induces trance based on low-pitched, repetitive melodic phrases emerging from sonic magma, the monolithic structure of the album. The music arranged here in such a way, as if it was to create a soundtrack accompanying the journey into yourself, meditation or suspension between dreams and reality. The album is released in a 2-panel ecopak in a strictly limited edition of 300 copies. [label info]

Kawabata Makoto -- "The Tales Of The Dream Planet" -- CD -- €10
2009 Housepig, hpig-015, (ltd. 500)
The mastermind behind Acid Mothers Temple (and a zillion other projects) parked his spaceship long enough to fish this cd out of his beard and give it Housepig, before closing the hatch and rocketing back into the stratosphere. What he brought back from the Dream Planet is two tracks of long, overlapping guitar drones; glacially melodic, meditative and a touch otherworldly. Curl up in your favorite dashiki, let your hair hang down, fire up some incense (or anything else) and let Kawabata spin you a tale! This cd is presented in a dvd-style clear poly case with full-color four-panel jacket, and is limited to 500 copies. [label info]

2011 Ljud & Bild Produktion, LBP002, (ltd. 300)
Cold and glacial drone recorded at the prestigious EMS in Stockholm. Moon Over Torrelorca, the second album from Keränen, serves as a great follow up to his amazing debut album Bats In Attic that Lasse Marhaug's Pica Disk released last year. In contrast to the high energy multi-layered noise bomb the debut offered, Moon Over Torrelorca instead showcases another side of this highly skilled sound artist with a carefully composed drone piece. Comes packaged in digipack. Pressing of 300. [label info]

KK Null -- "Extropy Ground Zero" -- CD -- €10
2017 4iB Records, 4iB CD/0117/026, (ltd. 250)
In Extropy Ground Zero, Kazuyuki Kishino displays an intriguing approach towards the genre of experimental noise. Deviating from his usual genre style, he unleashes new material of percussive blast beats which take dominance in the 2 tracks (one studio and one live) contained within. The juxtaposition of electronic percussive noise tempo against layers of interweaving swooshes and electronic bleeps provide an interesting ambience of sound, which strongly reflect KK Null’s unique creative process in noise experimentation. KK Null -- "Material Of Darkness" -- CD -- €10
2013 Noisoke Records / Bunga Bangkai Records, (ltd. 400)
Here we find Null in a more composing mood, moving away from the more obvious noise works he does, and into the field he's been in for quite some time. There is fine sense of rhythm here, but also steady sustaining blocks of drone sounds, which work either quite loud and oppressive or neatly low humming like a ventilator. Like with his most of his works, here it's hard to say how this was composed/conceived, but unlike - spoiler ahead - 'Volcanoid' the subdued nature of these works made me think this was the more composed work of the two. More constructed, working around with rhythm sounds a bit more, even a processed piano can be spotted in the second part, which was the favorite of the two here. But perhaps also less composed than 'Edging' I think and making a balance between the composed and improvised works of KK Null. Con furioso, but with great care. [FdW, Vital Weekly]

KK Null & Dao De Noize -- "Mizuchi Creation" -- CD -- €10
2015 4iB Records, 4iB CD/1214/014, (ltd. 200)
Mizuchi or ‘Master of the Water’ is a name used to describe a well known mythical Japanese water deity resembling a serpent that lives in and around water. Titled ‘Water Snake’ in Japanese, this collaborative release showcases the sound wizardry of Japanese experimental multi-instrumentalist K.K. Null (Kazuyuki Kishino) and Ukraines’s ambient and noise artist Dao De Noize (Artem Pismenetskii). Mizuchi Creation comprises 2 tracks that flow continuously as one. Just like the impending ferocity of the serpent gliding through expanse of calm water, the album effectively maintains its sonic equilibrium of noise and soundscape through the complex balance of structured pulses, rhythmic noise, drones and hisses with the serene ambience of nature, mythology and life. Machinefabriek -- "Assemblage" -- CD -- €10
2017 Zoharum, ZOHAR 134-2, (ltd. 300)
”Assemblage” is the fifth Rutger Zuydervelt's album released on Zoharum (including his collaborative album with Dag Rosenqvist). The album, like the already sold-out album "Dubbeltjes", is subtitled "Gathered Eccentrics" and collects rare Machinefabriek recordings from compilations, collaborative releases and the 3-inch EP "Nerf". Among the recordings you can also find unreleased soundtracks for films and installations. Why should you get this compilation? First of all, the artist shows the development in the period of 2010-2016. It is also a good collection introducing into the world of Rutger Zuydervelt's music. A kind of "best of", but without the most famous songs. The album contains 15 tracks and, what Rutger emphasized on the occasion of "Dubbeltjes", short pieces with their limitations give way to experiment while creating a concise forms. 1992/2016 Zoharum, ZOHAR 112-2, (ltd. 350)
Musicians of the now-defunct Maeror Tri have already had many opportunities to work with Zoharum on both releasing their new recordings and reissues of their older material. Our catalog contains titles by Troum (“Autopoiesis / Nahtscato”, “Seeing-Ear Gods” and “Dreaming Muzak”), 1000Schoen (double split with Polish Ab Intra), and also their original project Maeror Tri (“Emotional Engramm” and “Meditamentum”). Together with musicians we remove blank spots in their discography by restoring their older recordings... Maeror Tri was a project operating since the mid-80s until 1997, when they released their last album entitled “Emotional Engramm.” In their works they penetrated such genres as minimalism, ambient and industrial music, and borrowed drone aesthetic from classical music. In addition to seven regular albums on CD and LP, they released a number of cassettes. They contained much rawer recordings compared to those from the trio’s regular albums. One of these two tape albums is “Hypnobasia” originally released in 1992 by the Italian label Old Europa Cafe. It was the fifth tape in the discography of Maeror Tri. The following rerelease is expanded with 3 additional tracks lifted from various artists compilations from 1989-1992. All the recordings have been remastered for this release. Makemake -- "Something Between" -- CD -- €10
2017 Zoharum, ZOHAR 144-2, (ltd. 300)
"Something Between" is the second album of Makemake, a new project collaborating with Zoharum. The project plays sounds in the region near free impovisation, electroacoustic music and psychedelia. The album was recorded in October 2016 in the CK Agora theatre hall in Wroclaw. Thanks to recording in such a specific, large room, a very interesting sound was obtained. Additionally, the recording of the instruments was done on 9 microphones in different parts of the room. The mix and mastering was taken care of by Michał Kupicz, who gave the album a specific spatial sound. The material is different from the one that can be heard on the debut album "From the Earth to the Moon" (MC, Złe Litery, 2016), which was entirely a recording of the free improvisation session. The second album is dominated by "open compositions" in which there are tangent / joint points, and the rest is built around improvisation. "Something Between" uses prepared electric guitars plus electronics. The album is released in a 3-panel ecopak in a strictly limited edition of 300 copies. [label info]

Mammoth Ulthana -- "Particular Factors" -- CD -- €10
2016 Zoharum, ZOHAR 118-2, (ltd. 400)
One of the most well-reviewed Zoharum releases is the debut album of Mammoth Ulthana from 2013. The duo of Jacek Doroszenko and Rafal Kołacki had us wait very long, three years, for their follow-up album. Entitled “Particular Factors” it continues the path traversed on the duo’s debut album. The duo continues to create music based on the juxtaposition of organic and computer-generated sounds. This time the bigger focus has been placed on the diversity of sound, vibrating rhythms and performative approach to the recording process. There is also a new sonic level based on the use of unconventional instruments. The compositions included on the album compose a story about an ancient community that uses the phenomenon of sound as a medium to express a deep connection with nature. The album is released in a 3-panel digipak in a strictly limited edition of 400 copies. [label info]

Merzbow / Raven / Dao De Noize -- "Animal Liberation" -- CD -- €10
2015 4iB Records, 4iB CD/0514/016, (ltd. 200)
Animal Liberation features 3 characteristically powerful tracks of varying harshness and noise intensities with it’s theme strongly centered on animal rights and its firm stand against animal abuse. The journey into the audio slaughterhouse begins with 2 harsh noise tracks presented by prolific Japanese noise artist Masami Akita, otherwise famously known as Merzbow and Serbia’s harsh noise artist Raven (or Djordje Miladinovic), who is highly recognisable in the harsh noise circuit as anti-war as well as a strong supporter of animal and human rights and conscious environmentalist. These two violently painful tracks are complex with a high level of hypnotic and sonic energy. The message of what these artists stand for are uniquely expressed by heavy layers of organic sounds, high frequency screeches and low level drones that almost sound like animal screams and grunts in the abattoir. This journey of butchery finally comes to an end with a closing ambient track from Ukraine’s noise/ambient artist Dao De Noize (Artem Pismenetskii). The tranquil hums overlapped by murmuring soundscapes with the background beating of hearts and animal bellows, bleats and cackles complement and complete the album. These 3 highly emotive tracks successfully propagate the intended message through a unique display of artistic sonic expression that is now one of the greatest social change movement around the world. Mirt -- "Random Soundtrack" -- CD -- €10
2016 Kosmodrone, DRONE 1601 CD, (ltd. 300)
"Random Soundtrack" is a kind of extended field recording or sonic Écriture automatique. It's another attempt to search the point where music and found sounds intersect. "Random Soundtrack" is a sort of sister album to last year's "Vanishing Land". Similarly to its predecessor, it is a series of interfusing recordings, compositions, scraps of field recordings, ordinary connectors. However, while "Vanishing Land" was the result of laborious shuffling a well-known material, "Random Soundtrack" is an album created in its own right, almost unconsciously. Its framework was created by some forgotten compositions and improvisations found in the memory of the recorder which coincidentally shaped a whole by themselves. Several elements that were added later only developed this sketch in a similar manner to the idea of André Breton. The album that was created this way is in fact more a synthesis of real images than a surreal vision. Quasifilm aesthetics and seemingly hypnotic sound hide a worrying thought about capturing the image of the last quiet days of the chaotic world. [label info]

Monopium / K. -- "Nightclubbing / Die Wolfe Kommen Zuruck" -- CD -- €10
2016 Zoharum, ZOHAR 128-2, (ltd. 300)
Split releases, containing recordings of two or three projects, has been appearing in Zoharum catalogue from the very begining. The second album released on Zoharum was exactly the split between Different State and Sigill. In the course of our nine-year activity, so far we released such splits between Bisclaveret and Feine Trinkers Bei Pinkels Daheim, Re-DrUm and b°tong, 1000schøen and Ab Intra, and the compilation "Circuit Intégré Volume 1" containing recordings by Dat Rayon, FOQL / RNA2 and Gaap Kvlt. The next release is therefore a continuation of this informal series... Projects Monopium and K. has been working for quite a while now and they have already collected quite a few releases of their own. Monopium teeters on the verge of dada cabaret and improvised music, and K. presents hissy structure with a variety of samples, voices and scraps of melodies bubbling underneath. There are as many similarities between the two projects as there are differences. But together they have created a very cohesive album with a clear inspiration, namely the achievements of the German krautrock. Each of the projects presented 23 minutes of their own music. On the one hand, you hear elements of the early sonic experiments of the 70s or even the rhythmic structures otherwise known as motorik, and, on the other hand, each of the Polish projects is still true to their vision... This split release is housed in a 2-panel gatefold sleeve and is strictly limited to 300 copies. [label info]

Nowa Ziemia 2 -- "Adrjanczyk | Banasik | Krychowiak" -- CD -- €10
2017 Zoharum, ZOHAR 135-2, (ltd. 250)
Nowa Ziemia is a young project hailing from Gdynia. The man behind it is Artur Krychowiak, known from the band God's Own Prototype. He has already released two albums: a digital release "Trajektorie" (2014, Eg0cide Productions) and a CDR "Sceneria" (2015, Music is the Weapon). Nowa Ziemia 2 is a collaborative project the convention of which is based on two duets with Dawid Adrjanczyk (Akpatok) and Michał Banasik (Tranquilizer). The two recorded tracks are the result of ambient, experimental and improvised. The musicians with their unconventional approach make use of avant-garde techniques in search of new guitar sounds. On the one hand, you can hear drone music in many forms and, on the other, acoustic elements giving an almost ethnic flavor. This album is a unique musical journey into unexplored territories. The album is released in a 3-panel ecopak in a strictly limited edition of 250 copies. [label info]

Of The Wand And The Moon -- "The Lone Descent" -- CD -- €13
2011 Heiðrunar Myrkrunar, HEIM010
The long awaited and anticipated 5th album from Denmark's Of The Wand & The Moon. Again Kim Larsen takes another road than the previous albums. 60's influenced, where the love for Lee Hazlewood and Serge Gainsbourg shines through. Still keeping the dark neofolk roots though, "The Lone Descent" is without doubt the most bleak and melancholic album from Of The Wand & The Moon, and clearly shows Larsen's brilliant talent as a singer/songwriter. Featuring among others: Lorenzo Woodrose from Danish psychedelic rock act 'Baby Woodrose', Aron from Danish Psych/folk rock act 'Aron', danish Cellist Soma Allpass (Mew, Martin Hall, etc.), trumpet player Bo Rande (The William Blakes, Mew, Blue Foundation), John Murphy (Death In June, Knifeladder, Nico, SPK), John van der Lieth (Sonne Hagal), Anne Eltard (known for various Danish acts and Kim Larsens Solanaceae, OTWATM) and :Of The Wand & The Moon: engineer Louise Nipper 'Alouise'. Phelios -- "Human Stasis Habitat" -- CD -- €10
2016 Loki Foundation, LOKI 64
After two outstanding CDs on Malignant Records, Martin Stürtzer returns with his new PHELIOS album ´Human Stasis Habitat´. Its predecessors opened the gates to a transcendent journey with huge sound walls of cosmic doom and ritualistic percussion; the new album moves deeper to the core from which the monolithic audio sculptures of PHELIOS rise. ´Human Stasis Habitat´ is a constant maelstrom of sound waves utilising majestic and ominous dronescaping, underlaid by intense bass tones and loaded with echoes. These add a vast emptiness to the textural darkness, enlarging its stoically cosmic aura in the most splendid way. It is the perfect soundtrack for an aural journey far beyond the Earth and our imagination, into the deepest spaces where the dark is light enough. [label info]

Phurpa -- "Chod" -- 2 CD -- €14
2016 Zoharum, ZOHAR 127-2, (ltd. 400)
Tibetan “chöd” roughly means “being cut off”. That is also the title of the new piece of work of shamans from Moscow. Phurpa returns with a completely new material, without doubt, the best in their discography. It perfectly shows the strength of their music based on the “rgyud-skad” singing, meditation and the use of traditional instruments, often made of human bones... Chöd is the practice of sacrificing the body. To actively participate in meditation we invite not only enlightened beings, but also the residents of the six realms of existence, including the essence of hell and all the spiritual “filth” there is, all possible demons. They just have to be the main beneficiaries of the sacrifice made, and the body of the meditator becomes their food. Traditionally, this practice was carried out in desolate and lonely places, and often even frightening – in the fields of cremation and burial grounds near the dismembered corpses and wild animals preying on them. The practitioners of chöd were called crazy yogis... Over a 90-minute monolith in two scenes. The musical trans introducing listeners into the state of meditation. “Chöd” is released as a double album in 3-panel ecopak, in a strictly limited edition of 400 copies. [label info]

Phurpa -- "Mantras Of Bon" -- CD -- €10
2014 Zoharum, ZOHAR 075-2 II, (ltd. 250)
PHURPA is one of the most interesting recent music phenomena. Founded by Alexey Tegin they create meditative music with its roots in the ancient pre-buddhist tradition BON. Their concerts resemble shamanic mysteria where sounds, singing and rhythms invoke trance-like state introducing the listeners into the realm of dead gods and the times of culture that is already gone. The musicians themselves stress the spiritual nature of their activity. They have carried their message to many cities all over the world. They played gigs in Paris, Bristol and Amsterdam among others, and also took part in prestigious festivals. They are a staple of Moscow concert scene, where they hold live sessions lasting a few hours. One can look for a similar band in vain, a band that approaches the sound matter and its creation in such an accurate way. They use traditional instruments, but also human bones found in Tibetan wastelands. They meditate and practise the way of singing called "rgyud-skad." The magic and strength of their music has been appreciated by Stephen O'Malley among others, who released one of their albums on his own label... Zoharum would like to present the latest album by the band entitled "Mantras of Bon." It is an extraordinary release, even for such an extraordinary and unusual project as PHURPA. More than 70 minutes of music here is divided into two parts. The first one, featuring Alissa Nicolai on vocals, shows the band from a completely different angle; the other one presents the most important and interesting sessions recorded over the past few years, with a recording from CTM festival where they impressed the audience with "kuntunzangpo." "Mantras of Bon" is an excellent introduction into the adventures with PHURPA, the world of Tibetan music filtered by contemporary reinterpretation free from rigid rules. It may enchant both those looking for interesting sacral music and the ones searching for a new form of sonic statement. [press-release] Second edition.

Rapoon -- "The Kirghiz Light" -- 3 CD -- €17
1995/2016 Zoharum, ZOHAR 122-2, (ltd. 500)
The next one in the series of classic Rapoon albums reissues is 'The Kirghiz Light', which was originally released in 1995 on Staalplaat. This is a unique position, because it was since sold out for a long time and fetched high prices on few auctions. It is also one of the most interesting Robin Storey albums from the beginnings of his activities as Rapoon, where strong ethnic motifs are combined with atmospheric passages. Originally a double album, this reissue has been extended with an additional album entitled 'Our Calling Light'. The source material used here was original demo recordings for 'The Kirghiz Light', which have been reinterpreted giving it a whole new sonic space. The CDs are housed in a 4-panel digipak sleeve and the album is strictly limited to 500 copies. [label info]

Rapoon -- "My Life as a Ghost" -- 2 CD -- €14
2004/2017 Zoharum, ZOHAR 141-2, (ltd. 500)
The next album in the Rapoon reissue series is "My Life as a Ghost" from 2004. It is suspended exactly between the "Rhiz" with its rhythmic structures and the human voice experiments known from, for example, "Disappeared". Another thing that returned are strong ambient textures which were absent from "Rhiz" coming from the same period and reissued together with "My Life as a Ghost". This is one of the most interesting, if not the most interesting Robin Storey album, from the first decade of 2000s. The current edition, along with most other Rapoon re-releases in the Zoharum catalog, has been expanded to include an additional disc featuring refreshed unpublished recordings from the same session. On this second disc Robin Storey penetrates more rhythmic regions again, but with a strong melodious backbone. The extra 70 minutes completes the original album in a perfect way. The CDs are housed in a digipak sleeve and the album is strictly limited to 500 copies. [label info]

Rapoon -- "Navigating By Colour" -- CD -- €10
1999/2001 Soleilmoon Recordings, SOL 71 CD
Reissue of Robin Storey’s most ambitious project to date. Reissue is not limited. Booklet and cover reprint seven images from the twelve cards that came with first edition. Musically, “Navigating By Color” is an evolutionary step forward, with none of the Asian and Indian references that characterized his earlier albums, but still sounding recognizably like a Rapoon record. Several pieces are faintly evocative of drum ‘n’ bass, believe it or not, while others are built from loops of ambient noise and cool atmospheres. Listeners familiar with Robin’s first band Zoviet France will be pleased to hear echoes from the distant past in this album. [label info]

Rapoon -- "Rhiz" -- CD -- €10
2002/2017 Zoharum, ZOHAR 142-2, (ltd. 500)
We would like to present another album in Rapoon reissue series. And this is an unusual album. Released in 2002, "Rhiz" is an album with ... dance music. Robin Storey continued to use distinctive elements for his work, such as blurry vocal samples and drones sound passages, but rhythm is in the forefront in six "Rhiz" tracks. A good ear will find here elements from leftfield electronica, IDM and even acid house. But this is a difficult album, despite these surprising rhythms, especially for those accustomed to ambient spaces usually created by Robin Storey. The new album was slightly remastered, while the cover was designed from scratch and expanded with additional photos from the same session. The CD is housed in a digipak sleeve and the album is strictly limited to 500 copies. [label info]

Rara -- "W//\TR" -- CD -- €10
2016 Zoharum, ZOHAR 125-2, (ltd. 300)
RARA now returns as a full band with a new album entitled W//\TR. It is a concept album developing and closing themes started on Planet Death Architecture. Music from the new album still borders widely-understood folk built on looped sequences of guitar, but at the same time draws from a multitude of other styles ranging from ambient, melodic drones, echoes of world music, cold wave avant-pop to the raw elements of techno. This is music full of space, filled with cold air of the northern coast and the warm rhythm of the southern seas. And above all hovers the spirit of Thomas Mann and the mysterious aura of the Davos resort... RARA (formerly known as Przed Państwem Rara) is a project initiated by Rafał Skonieczny, vocalist and guitarist of Hotel Kosmos. In 2015, he released a solo album Planet Death Architecture (CD – Nasiono Records, MC – Złe Litery). The recording also featured Michał Pszczółkowski and Mikołaj Zieliński (known from Alameda 3, Alameda 5 and and T’ien Lai). A very well-received first concert – already as a trio – took place at SpaceFest in Gdańsk in 2014... Besides Skonieczny playing acoustic guitar, synths and loop effects, Pszczółkowski playing electric guitar and emitting warm synthetic sounds and Zieliński responsible for bass, the other acoustic guitar, percussion and monotron, there are also guests on the album. Two tracks are sung by Ola Bilińska, known from Babadag, Berjozkele and Bye Bye Butterfly. Kuba Ziołek, known from Stara Rzeka, Innercity Ensemble or Kapital also features on one of the tracks on vocals. The album was recorded, mixed and mastered by Wojciech Noskowiak in the studio in Sopot. The album is strictly limited to 300 copies. [label info]

Ritual Violence -- "s/t" -- CD -- €10
2015 Filth And Violence, FILTH&VIOLENCE-109 / Bestial Burst, BeBu-072
RITUAL VIOLENCE is a project band featuring key members of Bizarre Uproar, Ride For Revenge and Below... and surely sounds like that. Will also please those unfortunate souls into most raucous Filth&Violence and Bestial Burst acts like Sadistic Bliss, Flooded Church of Asmodeus etc. Raw sound, heavy riffs repeated ´til you vomit in disgust, some blasphemous total noise + well placed samples about Satanic rituals. If that´s not your cup of tea, lucky you, move forward. Two lenghty tracks in 40 minutes, packaged in delicious looking digipak. [label info]

Rotat -- "Carnal Beauty" -- CD -- €10
2016 Freak Animal Records
After hearing this great recording of ROTAT, Freak Animal decided that merely around dozen copies as self financed tape isn't enough. What we have here, is full length CD version of Carnal Beauty. Unusual case in Finnish noise at this era, announcing influences like TAINT and SMELL & QUIM. Providing both sleaxy and grim as well as deranged sense of black humor. It is hard to put ROTAT into narrow category. It goes from harsh and brutal noise to power electronics, with lots of primitive sounds and electronic damage. It is ugly and disturbing recording. Sadio -- "Sophisticated Methods In Torture" -- CD -- €10
2015 Freak Animal Records
SADIO is Kommando Skingraft (fin) and Grunt (fin) project. Debut CD consist 10 tracks of extremely fierce material. All recordings were conducted studio-live, in loud and rough situations. No multitracking or editing. Album consists loud and piercing power electronics assaults as well as brutal noise and more experimental moments. Rare blend of influences ranging from Final Solution, Strict, Ramleh, Sutcliffe Jugend to turbulent storming noise of Monde Bruits and Solmania to brooding dark obscurities of Herman Kopp and odd electronic rhythm pulses of Club Moral. Naturally not very far from own works of participants of project! [label info]

2008 New Era Productions, (ltd. 300)
This is a different version of the "Projekt Misanthropia" album. Liner notes: "This cd contains the original recording of Projekt Misanthropia, completely different and over 10 minutes longer. This is exactly how it sounded while Stalaggh performed their Audio-Terrror... Of this recording only a tape survived, which was digitally mastered for this limited release. This is for those who could bear the official release of Projekt Misanthropia. You will endure a far more extreme and raw version on this cd. This is Stalaggh in it's purest form."

Strom Noir -- "Maľované Kvety & Xeroxové Motýle" -- CD -- €10
2017 Zoharum, ZOHAR 140-2, (ltd. 300)
This year Emil Mat'ko celebrates 10 years of an artistic activity under the moniker Strom Noir. For this occasion we have prepared a special release which is both a new album and a compilation. "Maľované Kvety & Xeroxové Motýle" contains two unpublished Strom Noir materials, originally recorded with the intention of releasing them on cassettes. The first session contains recordings from the years 2015-2016 and these are excellent drone compositions, close to the recordings of "Glaciology". The second session contains compositions from 2011, giving the atmosphere and the character of the early Strom Noir recordings. Raw electronic structures are enriched by the reconstructed acoustic guitars. Both materials provide an excellent insight into the work of Strom Noir. The album is released in a 3-panel ecopak in a strictly limited edition of 300 copies. [label info]

Sutcliffe Jugend -- "S L A V E S" -- 6 CD BOX -- €45
2016 4iB Records, 4iB CDBox/0714/023, (ltd. 300)
These past few years have been a busy hive of activity for Sutcliffe Jugend with the release of some really intriguing albums and captivating live aktions. It was during this period that saw the band develop and progress into a more mature sound and style. Through the creative implementation of complex structures and new sound elements, they have evolved into genre defying styles, while still not losing elements of the old PE strain of harshness of sound and lyrics. It was also during this period that S L A V E S was conceptualised, developed and slowly realised. From 2012, this album was already in the making. It was only after numerous edits and re-workings that this 6 CD album was finally deemed complete and good to go for final production and eventual release... S L A V E S consists of 6 parts defined by ‘Theatres’. These 6 separate but highly relevant chapters put the entire album into the context of an abstract dance performance ‘THEM’ displayed at the Centre Pompidou, Paris in 2012. Each disc contains uniquely different themes that revolve around distinctive sound environments with varying ambience. With occasional and minimal overdubs over the entire 56 tracks, the complex sound layers are arranged such that they weave in and out of the subconscious, narrating closely the fluid movements of the dancers... Overall, this release ‘was conceived with the intent of capturing very different elements of the Sutcliffe Jugend sound, grouped both conceptually and stylistically.’ S L A V E S was intended to remind us about how we are all passive slaves to our slowly evolving tastes, and ultimately doomed to fail in our struggle with life and ultimately death. Enjoy. [press-release]

Suverana -- "Vanguard" -- CD -- €10
2012 Rage In Eden, RIE85
“Suveräna-Vanguard is a project that refers to a Spanish tragedy, melancholy.” These words were written by Mario – a person responsible for Suveräna music; you can agree with that but finally each of us, listeners can interpret the music in their own way. Certainly the music does not lack some nice melodies, military rhythm and, what I like the most, emotions. To fulfil my annalistic duty I can mention, that the album was made in 2011 and it is a debut and was created, as Mario put it, “by active members of industrial and neo-classical scene”. Nothing but listen to, it’s worth it! [label info]

Szymczuk, Maciek -- "Light of the Dreams" -- CD -- €10
2017 Zoharum, ZOHAR 138-2, (ltd. 300)
Ambient. “Light of the Dreams” is the fourth solo album by Maciek Szymczuk released on Zoharum. It consists of eight compositions in which ambient sounds are intertwined with the rhythmic, trance and oriental influences which could be heard in Szymczuk’s other projects until now. So it is not only a consistent continuation of his previous solo releases, but also the development of the ideas we have heard on records by AABZU or Another One... The leitmotif are dreams, but the album is not submerged in the sleepy and lazy atmospheres. It’s easier to find the psychedelic and surreal visions, crazy swings of moods and musical action. In his latest songs you hear references to the best afrobeat, dub, psychedelia straight from the 1960s and 1970s. A trained ear can hear traces of the cult FM synthesis-a synth sounds made famous in the 1980s. Like his previous album, “Music for Cassandra,” this one is (almost) exclusively instrumental, lasting a bit over 40 minutes... The graphic design by Karolina Stanieczek corresponds in a great way with music. Economical and minimalist form of the cover can be modified – colour templates are inserted into the cover and you can supplement the front cover with them. This way everyone can “dream” their dream... 'Truth lies not only in a dream, but in many dreams” -- Pier Paolo Pasolini. The album is released in a 3-panel digipak in a strictly limited edition of 300 copies. [label info]

TAT -- "Quinta Essentia" -- CD -- €10
2006 self-released
Some time ago I received an interesting CD from France. It was sent by Antoine Aureche, the TAT project creator. Despite the fact that his web-site adress includes such a proud word as "darkfolk", to my mind the "Quinta Essentia" CD style is rather gothic folk with neoclassic elements. All 10 tracks are quite various. Acustic guitar and sequencer form this music basis, which is accompanied by male and female vocals. It's hard to call male voice by word "vocal" because Antoine's voice sounds like infernal death-rattle or gnash. But that's why we can compare this album with Weltenbrand, Elend and Eros Necropsique. The girl with mysterious name Esclarmonde sings quite good, but you as can notice she is not a professional vocalist. All these tracks are accessible for downloading in mp3 format at TAT web-site http://tat.darkfolk.free.fr. I didn't find any particular hit there. But CD is rather pleasant to listen. Only the last track quite differs from others. It's "The Emerald Tablet" (lyrics by Nietzsche), which surpsised me with its electronic drums. Sa a result "Quinta Essentia" has its own sound, rather French sound. And to my mind this feature is a doubtless advantage of the band. [Wolfsblood, Seidr]

Uton / Courtis -- "Flokka Kur" -- CD -- €10
2013 Musik Atlach, MA011
Flokka Kur is a collaboration work by Finnish Uton and Argentinan Anla Courtis. Started from the noisy mystical drones of Uton and after continued by Anla’s manipulations & some extra noise. Described as a “shamanic music in urban context” and “sounds for non-euclidean geometry landscapes”. All that under a theme of flowers, mixed with spanish and finnish language. [label info]

Vir' -- "Nizhniy Les (Lower Forest)" -- CD -- €10
2006/2014 Kunsthauch, scream 5, (ltd. 99)
Reissue of the first album by the Moscow-based sludge / dronedoom / noise band, previously released on CDR by Indie-Go! in 2006. Their basic instruments are overdriven bass guitar, drims and furious piercing vocals by Sergey Milushkin, some songs also feature folk instruments (harmonica, whistle, balalaika, mouth harp), well-placed samples and sometimes quite industrial noises made by metal objects, vacuum cleaner, coffee mill, etc. Quite unique band on the verge of Russian metal and industrial scenes - better listen! The reissue is made in a form of 6-panel digipak inside of a paper envelope with additional print.

Vir' / Ankylym -- "Tribute To Ministry" -- 3"CD-R -- €5
2007 Stauropygial Records, XLI
Each of these two Russian bands performed one cover version of Ministry tracks. Vir' plays "Lava" in their characteristic style: harsh distorted bass guitar, hypnotic drums and samples. Ankylym made a cover on "Stigmata", also in their own style of rollicking folk punk: bayan, tuba, tambourine, balalaika and crazy voices!

Vir' & Alexander Kibanov -- "Sent I November" -- CD -- €7
2017 No Bread!
The next development stage of Vir', the best Russian sludge-and-something project. This record, made in collaboration with Alexander Kibanov, a Siberian sound-experementalist, is named after the story by Tove Jansson "Late in November", the most somber part in Moominvalley cycle. After that book Jansson decided to stop writing the Moomin series. The story tells us of an incredibly rainy autumn, when it seems that the "suddenly summer seemed so far away that it might just as well have never been»; and it comes as a revelation that growing up happens through a loss. It would be absurd to draw direct parallels, but analogies are evident: if we understand growing up as a sophistication and acceptance of the fact that the world is incurably wretched, "Sent i november" is the most grown-up album by Vir'. First, the sound picture is much more intricate and at the same time more transparent than the suffocating drone-noise of recent releases. Second, a strange calm reigns in this album, one could even name its mood 'a violent conciliation'. Yes, the reality is understood as injust and desolate but this understanding does not imply that the observer's agreement to the status quo. In other words, "Sent i november" seems to explain that to understand does not necessarily mean to forgive. [NEN Records]

Vir' / Vali / HermanSyndrome / Aethyr -- "Dirgenera Quadrivium M.M.I.X." -- CD-R -- €7
2009 R.A.I.G., DIG01, (ltd. 102)
QUADRIVIUM is a Latin word meaning "the four ways" or "the four roads". It’s also a combination of the four liberal subjects or arts – traditionally, arithmetic, geometry, music and astronomy – taught in medieval universities. These followed the preparatory work of the trivium made up of grammar, logic and rhetoric. In turn, QUADRIVIUM was considered preparatory work for the serious study of Philosophy and Theology... DIRGENERA QUADRIVIUM consists of four one-track EP-albums by VIR’, VALI, HERMAN SYNDROME and AETHYR – respectively entitled "Clay", "Yggdrasil", "Birth" and "Mass" – which were initially published as mp3-only demos or not published at all in a year of MMIX. Here are four shades of Darkness and Doom; file these under Doom-Drone, Black-Noise, Death-Ambient or anything else. The disc (4 tracks - 65 min.) comes inside a hand-numbered silkscreen (a white over black cardboard) folder. There were 102 copies manufactured. [label info]

Vomir -- "Recouvre La Merde (En Trois Mouvements)" -- CD -- €10
2014 4iB Records, 4iB CD/0714/008, (ltd. 250)
“Recouvre la merde” or to loosely translate, “Cover the Shit” embodies the dark and sick humour of French ‘troubadour’ of Harsh Noise Wall, VOMIR. In this 3-parter, Romain Perrot unleashes a no-nonsensical torrent of unyielding wall-of-noise-harshness through 3 brain-convulsing tracks delivered in one long continuous movement. Guttural avalanche of sonic boom deluges upon the listener as the 3 long textural pieces of unpleasant roar harangue the listener into psychotic submission. The grinding movement of each abysmal track succumbs the listener into a state of sonic claustrophobia through its absolutely unique monolithic tonal amplification, all streaming seamlessly as one complete orchestral symphony... Other than copious abuse of the aural senses, the album is also visually disturbing due to the vivid reference to coprophagia. This is attributed to the creative design work of imagenumérique’s™ Felix Rosier’s innovative art direction combining photography and installation art, and a crazed mind... “Recouvre la merde” completes the entire Perrot experience by staying true to Romain’s consistent classification of the term ‘ultra shit folk’. This album clearly asserts Perrot’s psychological position about the sad state of the world we live in, reinforcing his statement (in more ways than one): “We all eat shit everyday, women more than men. The shit is everywhere. Now it’s time to overlay all this shit, and noise is one way to do it”! Listen Loud! [label info]

WIDT -- "s/t" -- CD + DVD -- €14
2016 Zoharum, ZOHAR 124-2, (ltd. 300)
Zoharum would like to present the official debut album of WIDT - an audiovisual cooperation of two sisters - Antonina Nowacka (music) and Bogumila Piotrowska (live analogue visuals). The album consists of seven audio tracks, each with a visual response as an equal component. To convey the full content and the potential of its impact the material is released in the form of a CD/DVD set. The album is a documentation of immersing in and extending individual motives from improvised audiovisual sessions. These sessions were implemented with a use of voice, synthesizers, effects, an old tv set and analogue video equipment, emphasising the importance of the physical process of creation. It is the motivating aspect of the body and mind to direct the power of human brain into the endless sources of imagination. The whole content is an equvalent of purifying journey to deliver a fundamental psychedelic experience on its own right. The CD/DVD set is housed in a 3-panel digipak sleeve and is strictly limited to 300 copies. [label info]

2005 Experimental Artists
In a world where even the 'experimental' genre has been given finite boundaries, Robert Ziino is a musical pioneer composing for the free thinkers and aurally enlightened. With silence as his blank canvas, Ziino enters a euphoric, timeless state and creates like a painter of sound. There has yet to be a term of classification that fully captures the abstractions he creates. Using analog driven electronic modular synthesizers; his manipulations aim to produce soundscapes beyond those that history has given modern man. The instrumentation is entirely electronic, laid in one take with live mixing. His command of the endless possibilities of electronic patterns may forever change the concept of music. [CD Baby]

Dead Body Collection -- "Quite Unreachable Hell" -- 7" -- €10
2015 4iB Records, 4iB 7"/0714/011, (ltd. 200)
This 7″ release was recorded during a very emotionally unsettling period of bleakness and hopelessness for prolific Serbian harsh noise wall act Dead Body Collection, otherwise known as Aleksandar Nenad. Just like a stormy vortex, the listener slowly gets sucked into a disturbing emotional experience of an ever ascending wall of dark and uneasy noise abyss. You can almost feel the anguish through the hypnotic and suicidal atmospheres manifested by the relentless wall of amplified grind and sonic vibrations. Once again, Dead Body Collection continues to stand as one of the more serious purveyors of the HNW scene. With the effective manipulation of rumbling static textures and deafening sonic intensities, these multitude layers of distorted monolithic noise frequencies eventually crush the listener into a hellish state of delirium. Echoes Of Yul -- "The Healing" -- LP -- €17
2016 Zoharum, ZOHAR 106-1 / Tar Trail, TT001-1, (ltd. 300)
After two regular albums, a split release and a well-received EP called "Tether", Echoes of Yul returns with a brand new full-length album filled with their own vision of slow-motion music. The weight and intensity of the previous releases give way to atmospheric, multiinstrumental journey through the author's concept of sonic tracks, krautrock, dub and minimal rock. Less literal and more musically abstract - that's what the new Echoes of Yul sounds like with all their characteristic elements but exploring new territories and not repeating their previous ideas. Michal Sliwa is not trying to follow worn-out, tried and safe paths, but created a new coherent piece of work entitled "The Healing"... The album is produced by Michal Sliwa and mastered by James Plotkin (OLD, Khanate). [label info]

Mammoth Ulthana -- "Particular Factors" -- LP -- €17
2016 Zoharum, ZOHAR 118-1, (ltd. 300)
[label info]

Naevus -- "Backsaddling" -- 7" -- €10
2014 4iB Records, 4iB 7"/0814/009, (ltd. 200)
Naevus has often been closely associated with the neofolk/darkfolk genre, but this 7″ release attests much more to that perception by demonstrating the versatility and diverse influence of the band. In this current lineup comprising Lloyd James, Ben McLees and Hunter Barr, the 4 tracks in Backsaddling draw from a wide variety of musical influences ranging from industrial; as a narrative intro that revisits a passage in time in ‘Up A Hill’, intermixed with frontman Lloyd James’s neofolk vocal style with further accompaniment of acoustic elements in ‘Listing Instincts’, and finally infused with electronics and progressive post punk melodies of infectious guitar twangs and bass riffs in ‘Aria/Acqua’ & ‘Ego’. The tracks are well written and harmoniously arranged that they defy a static genre definition. This can be attributed to Lloyd James’s extensive exposure to acts from across all genres and styles by being an active contributor in the music circle. Other than performing as a solo acoustic artist, Lloyd has been a prolific participant in many other experimental, post industrial, post punk and neofolk bands as a guest vocalist, percussionist and guitarist. Some of them include Knifeladder, Kirlian Camera, Sol Invictus, Sorrow/Rose McDowall, Sieben, Albin Julius & Friends, Andrew King, While Angels Watch, Fire + Ice, Mushroom’s Patience and more. Hence, be expected to discover the remnants of these acts being reinvented, rehashed and re-presented in a unique combination of genres in a style that is uniquely Naevus. [label info]

Phurpa -- "Rituals Of Bon I" -- LP -- €17
2016 Zoharum, ZOHAR 126-1, (ltd. 300)
Phurpa is an extraordinary artistic and cultural project, not only on a European scale. For years, its members have been exploring the traditions of Bön - the magical practices of ancient Tibet, Iran and even Egypt, and they take it closer to their listeners. Over the last few years they have recorded dozens of sessions, released on various formats. They have already played countless number of concerts in various parts of the globe. Each of their performances assumes the character of a ritual where Phurpa members, thanks to their "rgyud-whence" singing and playing traditional instruments, often made of human bones, bring the audience into a kind of trance, a transgressive journey, inviting to a meeting with the ancients gods and demons of the pre-buddhist era. The Rita -- "Female Statuesque (Female Titans)" -- 7" -- €10
2015 4iB Records, 4iB 7"/1014/010, (ltd. 200)
The Rita continues his journey through ballet fetishism. "Female Statuesque" is a complex work of obsessive research on discipline, elite beauty, and suffering in the world of ballet. Monolithic walls of harsh noise with the classic Sam McKinlay (BT.HN, Vice Wears Black Hose, Black To Comm) trademark style. Ltd x 200 hand-numbered copies in a cardboard sleeve with insert. [Cold Spring]

The Rita -- "Journey Of The K-Verband (Throat Lure)" -- 7" -- €10
2017 4iB Records, 4iB 7"/0315/022, (ltd. 250)
Journey Of The K-Verband was recorded in the summer of 2011 and is the second chapter of The Voyage Of The Decima MAS. The K-Verband was the WWII German frogman equivalent to the Italian Decima MAS; taking example from the Italian frogmen and their missions. THE RITA has used the WWII frogmen theme as representative of the recordings, this time via sound sources from the miking of ocean fishing lures while jigging for Lingcod in the same areas snorkelled for the VOTDM source recordings. The Traumatone underwater contact mics attached directly to the lures meant that every sound after the various Lingcod took the lure and mic inside their throats was captured for eventual further analogue manipulation. With almost no trial and error, this technically ‘risky’ technique for picking up natural and violent source sounds turned out even better than expected between the initial taking of the mic and lure, the mic’d lure moving in the throat, and the eventual water surface splashing and the on deck removal of the mic’d lure from the fish’s mouth. A natural extension between the idea of the VOTDM snorkelling source sounds, the sounds now come directly from Lingcod that occupy the waters just kilometres from the original snorkel site in Pender Harbour, BC, Canada... Included with the release is an original illustration by BC First Nations artist Larissa Healey commissioned by THE RITA. [label info]

Damaskin -- "Sacrifice (Zhertvoprinosheniye)" -- CS -- €9
2017 NEN Records, NEN16, (ltd. 45)
Based in Belgium and Serbian by origin, Damaskin avoids publicity, giving space for an independent interpretation of its music: a predominantly grim and noisy techno, closely related to the themes of the sacred, judging by the names of the tracks. For the album «Жертвоприношение» ("Sacrifice"), however, the author made some exception. According to him, the recording is inspired by the film of the same name by Andrei Tarkovsky. The following quote from the essay of the film director, published in 1986 in the French magazin 'Positif', can serve as a commentary to the release: "To expose the hysteria which consists in wishing, at whatever the cost, to speak out and to express oneself. It's madness. Everyone desires fame simply as a source of comfort." Tracks of "Жертвоприношение" seem to demonstrate how the hysteria paradoxically turns into a catatonic stupor: the rhythmic electronics freezes in a static repetitivity, as if the desire to speak out paralyzes the speech and turns into voicelessness. Pustota -- "Letniy Holod (Summer Cold)" -- C-45 -- €6
2017 BioSonar^Lo-End, 071/2017, (ltd. 17)
Aside for technological tape noises the Pustota project also presents field recordings. This time in the stream of hollow audio fixations the June Petersburg has manifested. The recording of the master tape was done straight on a tape dictaphone from the last century with the use of a microphone from a professional video camera, but on a not so fresh tape. The fragments begin with domestic processes and gradually move into streets and public spaces. Minimalism, pseudo-documentation and absence of compositional basics, just fragments. Cold beginning of summer, city on the Neva river. Packed in a cardboard box with attached pocket calendars of the Soviet era. [label info']

Vir' -- "Horna" -- CS -- €5
2008/2015 Freak Friendly D.I.Y., ff019, (ltd. 100)
Second full-length from the Russian sludge band here represented only by it's founding member Sergey Milushkin who plays bass, sheet of iron and other scrap metal, violin, harmonica, rainstick ans some other instruments. Five long tracks with dense heavy atmosphere, complete absence of drums, but the layers of distorted bass are organized in solid industrial constructions riveted with relative rhythmics of effects, covered with rust of dissonant violin and tube (!), sometimes bursting with moments of furious vocals. Recorded with the help of guest musicians from the bands October 14 1964, Uratsakidogi, Ankylym. Cassette reissue made by the Ukrainian label Freak Friendly D.I.Y.

Cassette reissue made by the Ukrainian label Freak Friendly D.I.Y.

KickGuitarSinRun -- "There & Back" -- DVD-R -- €7
2017 Intonema, int022, (ltd. 100)
KickGuitarSinRun is the title of audio-visual composition for electric guitar, sine wave and electronic bass drum written by Ilia Belorukov. Guitarist Pavel Medvedev, known to Intonema's listeners for the release of Moweton project, choreographers Anna Antipova, noted earlier on the disc of Stefan Thut, and Daria Plokhova participated in the creation of the work. This composition consists of two large parts, There & Back. Each of these parts is divided into four more. The main interest of the composer lies in the field of interaction of the frequencies of different sound sources and human movements during running due to changes in tempo. A distinctive feature of the play is the monotony of the material, which contributes to the concentration of the listener in the smallest shades of sound and movement. [label info]

[haven] -- "A2982" -- CD -- €10
2008 Rage In Eden, RAGE 60, (ltd. 500)
42 minutes 05 seconds. This is the duration of the album. It will communicate any meter of time. Let us not however be deluded by the spells of this sorcerer; because the first sounds overturn its acknowledged and safe definition and begin construction of different, weirder spaces. This is the last chance to resign and turn back. Otheriwse, when you listen to the end of first track the only thihg left to say is "Toto, I have an impression that we're not in Kansas". You begin your own, separate (and the longest?) journey. What do you see on your way? What unknown ladns, traditions, incomprehesible rituals and dialects will you discover? I do not know. But I am sure that if David Lynch will ever undertake the filming of "Alice in the Wonderland" the soundtrack of the movie will be filled with the music from this particular album. "Victoire Vrist "Le Figuro". 10 tracks, 42 minutes, CD in digipack. [press-release]

Accomplice Affair -- "The Zone Of Silence" -- CD -- €10
2013 Zoharum, ZOHAR 055-2, (ltd. 500)
The latest Accomplice Affair album entitled "The Zone of Silence" is a journey through ambient-sphere based on guitar sounds and vocals with occasional hints of psychedelic rock and dark wave. 6 long compositions create a audiovisual space painted with both melodies and words. The concept album presents the world through harmed children's eyes, of those who hide in secluded places, dark rooms without windows. This record encaptures the listener's mind by playing with their emotion all the way through the album. The album features guest appearances of Baltazar Kobera (samples), Lugshar (keyboards) and Meres (percussion, double bass, vocals). The album is presented in a 6-panel ecopak strictly limited to 500 copies. [press-release]

Ad Lux Tenebrae -- "Sketches From That Autumn" -- CD-R -- €10
2006 Abgurd Subdivision, AB-21, (ltd. 132)
The first official release of Ural project AD LUX TENEBRAE (TOWARDS THE LIGHT OF DARKNESS) consists of recordings made during "That Autumn". The main style of ALT's playing is shamanic, ritual Drone\Dark Ambient, performed (mostly) & fixed with improvised means in a hut in the midst of Ural forest. Some tracks can be a perfect soundtrack for `The Blair Witch Project` movie. ALT uses hand-made instruments - a violin with springs instead of strings, which is played with a bow of steel - field recordings, fixed in the forests, swamps and villages of Ural. Harp, acoustic & bass guitars, vocals & voices, as well as old recordings with folk-songs of Bashkir nation were used. Very potent & original album with strong taste of muskarine, fragrance of autumn forest and fierceful mesmerism. [press-release] Promo copy (same as original, just not numbered).

Ad Ombra -- "Almost Eternity" -- CD -- €10
2011 Rage In Eden, RAGE 83
After two years since the last release of ‘Magna Charta Illusorum’, Ad Ombra returns with a new album titled ‘Almost Eternity- Handmade beliefs for the nostalgic lambs’. The album presents 10 orchestral compositions. All the complex tunes, changes in the pace, dramatic phrases and the beautiful opera voice; all of them heard from the previous releases are also presented on ‘Almost Eternity’. The music is perfectly polished, definitely the magic of the third record worked well. The most sophisticated album by Ad Ombra. [press-release]

Ad Ombra -- "Magna Charta Illusorum" -- CD -- €10
2009 Rage In Eden, RAGE 66
One year after his debut, George D. Stanciulescu returns with a neatly distinguished opus, this time reaching the heights of malignant Drama, in a suite of 12 tracks of majestic excess and voluptuously carven diversity. Elegant and compelling orchestral densities full of sophisticated charm, profound recesses, heart wretching scents of tragedy, viciously intense sopranos effusions, all morphed into a dynamic and ingenious set of cinematic impulses, elite livresque allusions and selected grains of madness. Ultimately emotional dramatic art with an excellent production, not to be missed by the admirers of (post)modern classical masters, industrial, dark ambient, opera/ethereal voices, Elend, Devil Doll or The Protagonist. 12 tracks, 45 minutes, 3 panel glossy digipack. Ad Ombra -- "Rites Of Genesis (Equinox Tremendum)" -- CD -- €10
2008 Rage In Eden, RAGE 53
Romanian project Ad Ombra’s debut album “Rites of Genesis” (equinox tremendum) offers a suite in 15 parts of Dramatic Orchestral art, rooted in the timeless fragrance of Classical music, adorned with Eastern lullabies, funeral dirges, monumental choirs and operatic female chants, theatrical soliloquies, industrial hues of a dark disturbing manner, all coagulated in order to depict the aesthetical testimonies of the project’s mastermind, George D. Stanciulescu. A spiral of emotions, thoughts, opalescent visions, essential recurrences, for Creation’s shrine that stands as a living mirror where everyone can reflect the(m)selves. For fans of Elend, Stoa, Sophia and Chaostar. 15 tracks, 42 minutes, 3 panel matt digipack with original artwork by Luna. [press-release]

Antikatechon -- "Chrisma Crucifixorum" -- CD -- €10
2012 Rage In Eden, RAGE 87
There were no classic dark ambient albums in Rage In Eden recently, so it's highest time to change it. This time I offer 57 minutes of music in this genre. Very interested album, not dominated only by dark sounds (of course they are present), but they are some kind of base for beautiful, trance melodies. This alternance of melodies and unspecified sounds makes this album to be listen with huge interest. [press-release]

Antikatechon -- "Woe Is The Reward" -- CD -- €10
2014 Rage In Eden, RAGE 105, (ltd. 300)
Davide Del Col has been working in the specific and uncompromising ritual dark ambient genre since the end of the 90s, this firstly under the moniker of Ornament for a couple of very rare limited editions then as Antikatechon which now represents the highlight of his artistic and stylistic creativity. A first full length album has been published on Silentes Minimal Editions back in 2011, this one provides a very accomplished effort in the realms of hauntingly dark ambient music with a touch of melancholic-spiritual inflected nihilism. Signed on Rage in Eden, "Chrisma Crucifixorum" is an other eloquent and complex release which oscillates between stately gazing drone sequences and original audio treatments, the whole thing surrounded by a sacral aura. 2013 saw the rise of a collaborative effort with the pioneering ethno-noise ambient act Nimh, also from Italy. This musical meeting gave birth to a passionate and typical dark ambient offering. The conceptual-visual background is connected to the visions and powerful painting works of Goya. Davide Del Col presents here his new catchy electronic dark ambient release entitled "Woe is the Reward", welcomed by Rage in Eden Records. A tremendous, entrancing and blasting dark ambient odyssey full of majestic sound sculptures, huge resonances, bleak noises, metallic reverbs and many more. This sonic, soundtracky and "acoustically haunted" ambient symphony will totally enthrall and ravish the listener. Be prepared to this intense sonorous adventure. [Philippe Blache]

2008 A Silent Place, ASP22
Glassine I was recorded live at the Ambient Ping in Toronto on 03/07/2006; and can be easily described as an organic space ambient, with very strong references to Pink Floyd (Ummagumma), Popol Vuh, Ashra Temple, Jackie-O Motherfucker, O Yuki Conjugate, AMP and Flying Saucer Attack or "Fourth World" ambient music! Four tracks of pure vibrant multi-layered psychedelic drone music! Now, close your eyes, listening to "Glassine I" and start for your trip even without the intake of any substances! [press-release]

Auswalht -- "Paroxysm" -- CD -- €10
2012 Rage In Eden, RAGE 86
France - this country has lately given us a lot of records of military industrial music, e.g. March of Heroes, Liyr, and now a great CD Auswalht. It is not a debut; we have had a chance to hear about Auswalht together with a debut of "History Of Suffering" released by Collapse Of Utopia from China. This time Auswalht has treated us with a great dose of military music. Earlier mentioned projects - March of Heroes and Liyr did not appear there by accident. Auswalht indirectly refers to achievements of two groups while seizing roughness of March of Heroes and Liyr's atmosphere. What's worth mentioning is that the music of Auswalht and Liyr was composed by the same person, Sven Mann. Powerful music, strong recommendation! [press-release]

Bisclaveret -- "Theu Anagnosis" -- CD -- €10
2014 Zoharum, ZOHAR 072-2 / Steinklang Industries, SK82, (ltd. 333)
BISCLAVERET returns with a new album entitled "Theu Anagnosis". It is a concept album, similarly to the previous 2 albums. In 8 compositions here the musicians captured a mystical-philosophical treatise of sorts. The first part of it, namely "An Introduction to Reading God", was presented on 7" vinyl split with Feine Trinkers bei Pinkels Daheim. By means of lyrics and music the duo creates apparently surreal own world of sounds devoid of "here and now." They propose their own vision of the Absolute which is seen through the eyes of mystics, madmen and free thinkers. The band invites us on a psychedelic wandering into the depth of ego, on a metaphysical adventure in the world of music painted with various colours, shapes and stories. Dreams of a madman? Calls of a scholar? Experience of a hermit? It all melts in a lava of many cultures. Yet here it creates a crystal, but heterogenic image. What is it like? Check it yourselves. The album is co-released by Steinklang Industries & Zoharum. Edition with black cover (222 copies). [label info]

C. Spencer Yeh -- "1975" -- CD -- €10
2011 Intransitive Recordings, int037
Intransitive Recordings is extra-proud to present 1975, the debut solo album of tightly-coiled, crackling electronic ambience by C. Spencer Yeh. While “debut” may seem a strange word to use to describe an album by a guy with such a deep discography, Yeh explains that 1975 is like nothing anyone has heard from him before. “One thing is I really wanted to focus on a certain feeling of stasis. So much of what else I do just kinda pushes and pushes forward. 1975 is more vertical than horizontal, even though one can’t escape the horizontal completely.” Taking a confident step away from his familiar work as an improvising violinist and vocalist, from the mythology of his rock/noise band Burning Star Core, and from his recent forays into pop music, the omnivorous Yeh here reveals himself to be a composer of unsettling electro-acoustic miniatures... Yeh approached his source material with a desire to be transparent, even literal, and to avoid straightforward narrative. The literal is there in the deceptively matter-of-fact track titles — “Drone”, “Voice”, “Shrinkwrap from Solo Saxophone CD”, “Two Guitars” — but knowing which sound source is buried beneath these tones does little to remove 1975‘s sense of enveloping mystery. This is sensual abstract music with a light touch, a confident minimalism that only reveals its unsettling depth, sharp corners, and playful malevolence with repeat listens... For fans of Eliane Radigue, Hecker, Pita, or Kevin Drumm. [press-release]

Chasse, Loren & Michael Northam -- "The Otolith" -- CD -- €10
2008 Helen Scarsdale Agency, HMS 014, (ltd. 700)
The recordings of Loren Chasse and Michael Northam begin and end with the great outdoors. Yet, the well-documented wanderlust of these two kindred sound artists is only part of the equation. Field recordings of wind, water, and stone intertwine and hybridize within private rituals of droning psychedelic ragas that return as a folklore reiterating the mystery of the natural world around us. Through his numerous contributions to the multi-faceted Jewelled Antler as well his solo work, Chasse has long postulated the microphone as an extension of his ear, which magnifies and probes the surface of the earth for a tactile grit that permeates all of the sounds that he generates. Northam claims his inspiration from vast geographies, microscopic detail, and severe weather, which he compacts through various techniques to explore what is between improvisation and acousmatic composition. Both Chasse and Northam entertain such notions through an alchemy of arcane instruments: autoharps, ouds, flutes, bells, gongs, bowed wires, harmonium, and Northam's magnetic table harp. The Otolith is the result of several years of work, with sounds gathered collectively in the San Francisco Bay Area and throughout Europe. The album speaks as a bramble of fence wire and chaparral scrub oak, acquiring an unkempt collection of rubbish, cobwebs, insects, and soil within its tangle. As the wind pushes in one direction, this mass emits a quite if scratchy melody as if the ghost from a forgotten song; but when the wind changes directions, it bellows a rasping din of metal and vine cracking against itself. This sodden calliope tumbles into a miasma of droning atmospheres, softly rasped distortion, and very subtly rendered lulabies lurking deep within the overgrowth. Hand letter-pressed in an edition of 700 copies. [press-release]

Cold Cave -- "Cremations" -- CD -- €10
2009 Hospital Productions, HOS-248
Cremations is a collection of early demo/live/and unreleased tracks from Cold Cave. From the projects isolated beginnings to the recent full band line-up the development of this singular musical entity is documented here in its icy electronic glory. From Cold Cave’s infancy sexual identity and oblique existentialism have been expressed through biting lyrics and electronic minimalism. Rarely has the human condition been exposed so brazenly as in “Sex Ads”. Melodies, noise and rhythms clash as stories from below the surface are retold. From the demo LP Coma Potion, which featured a rugged stripped down distortion, to the suggestive Electronic Dreams tour cassette (featuring the voice of Max Morton on the track “Heavenly Metals”). Cold Cave has developed its own brand of genre defying electronic music, without ever betraying its dark roots. Love and pornography, Industrial music and traditionalism, poetry and profanity all mix together in a hedonistic, cocktail of nihilistic nights and mournful mornings. Cremations collects all this work for the first and last time. [press-release]

Day Before Us -- "Misty Shroud of Regrets" -- CD -- €10
2013 Rage In Eden, RAGE 98, (ltd. 300)
“Misty shroud of regrets” presents a corpus of spleen-piano based ambiences and nightly soundscaping laments for electric organ and darkened chords. The musical ensemble reveals microtonal bitter melodies occasionally punctuated by a few narrative parts, an array of noises, found sounds and field recordings. “Misty shroud of regrets” is a timeless musical effort based on the existential photographic poetry of Yulia Kazban... Day Before Us is a darkly cinematic and semiclassical ambient project from France and formed by the piano player Philippe Blache. Since 2011 a handful of albums have been published on independent labels such as Rage in Eden, Cathedral Transmissions and Kadaath Records. [label info]

Day Before Us / Nimh -- "Under Mournful Horizons" -- CD -- €10
2012 Rage In Eden, RIE 91, (ltd. 500)
Giuseppe Verticchio (Nimh) is a brilliant Italian underground musician specialised in organic / visceral ambient tales. He is notably known for his collaboration with Maurizio Bianchi and modern experimental electronic artists (Nefelheim, Baghiri from Italy...). He released more than 10 albums (between 2001 & 2007, including collaborative projects). His charged, orchestrated abstract universe features dynamic musical motifs (from acoustic percussions, exotic instruments to e-guitar) superposed on electronic dronescapes. His work is now called ambient-electronic-ethnic-experimental music... Day Before Us is an acoustic micro-tonal ambient project formed in 2010. The musical signature is turned to solemn soundscaping ritualism, dada-esque hypnopedies and soundtracky ambiences. The content is sometimes sustained by digital field recordings. All tracks are recorded live. The main sources of inspiration come from odd literature, ghostly presence, angelology, cinematic poetry and the magical realism. Day Before Us means the everlasting power of ancient time which saves us from the amnesia of everyday life. [label info]

Desiderii Marginis -- "Thaw" -- CD -- €10
2014 Zoharum, ZOHAR 073-2
Of the Swedish wave of ambient acts from the 1990s, Desiderii Marginis is one of the few still active and definitely one of the finest of those few. Far from being a typical project in the vein of Brian Eno/Lustmord, Johan Levin, the mastermind behind Desiderii Marginis, has created and developed its own unique sonic palette merging digital and analogue: melancholic electronica with electroacoustic elements and intravenous rhythms. From the early days his music met with positive reactions resulting in albums on renowned the legendary Swedish Cold Meat Industry label, and lately also on Canadian Cyclic Law... Over the course of 20 years, Levin released 7 full-length albums, a 3-way split and a collection of rare pre-debut demos plus numerous tracks on various compilations. His latest offering entitled "Thaw" compiles the latter and adds 3 tracks from the split "Lost Signals from Unknown Horizons". On the one hand, it is simply a collection of rare tracks, but, on the other, it may serve a purpose of a "best of" album. With the chronology unaltered, it gives you the full picture of the project and its progress. It is a history lesson of the last 20 years in sonic melancholia of Desiderii Marginis. [press-release]

Drumm, Kevin -- "Imperial Horizon" -- CD -- €10
2009 Hospital Productions, HOS-251
Imperial Horizon by Kevin Drumm is a further examination into sustained tone as most recently heard on his previous Hospital Productions benchmark album, Imperial Distortion, stretching out minimalism to unreached heights of serene ambient. Lulling electronic drones slowly transform over the course of the hour plus piece in constant flux, echoing both an existential terror and Zen calm. Mutations grow so quietly only the body opens to identify this change while the mind closes. The ephemeral and seeming lightness of the tones hang with taut balance in contrast to the method in which they are overlapped and rotated with deadly аweight. How wildly divergent emotions rise, hover, and fall using so little is a mystery that only Kevin Drumm can provide. While you may not find an answer, you can certainly get lost in the question. Eldar -- "The Secret Golden Flower" -- CD -- €12
2012 Old Europa Cafe, OECD 163
ELDAR, the Spanish Dark Ambient/Martial project that once started on Cold Meat Industry, return with yet another conceptual album presenting a wide range of beautiful sounds. The concept of this album is inspired by the mystical and psychological archetypes to explain the universal version of a generic soul that rules from the collective unconscious of individuals in all human civilizations since antiquity. These archaic prototypes were copied, emulated and used since the dawn of humanity, and fantastic dream and images have been represented in myths and symbols, trying to explain these exemplary patterns that are still alive and latent until today. They sleep present in popular folklore, in the psyche of every human being, influencing yourself and collectively in the beliefs and ideas that lead them to make beautiful and creative acts or carrying even their own destruction, evolving or backward from that inexorable shape societies through time and history. This album runs in his melodies and lyrics the long road of archetypes that continue to print his psychological injury in each individual and that shape their behavior in society, determining the fate of humanity. Composed by Marc Merinee & Merce Spica and recorded at Oxid Studio Barcelona 2011. Produced & Mastered by Marc Merinee. Art Work by Alonso Urbanos.

Feine Trinkers Bei Pinkels Daheim -- "A Bug's Life" -- CD -- €10
2016 Zoharum, ZOHAR 114-2, (ltd. 500)
Jürgen Eberhard aka Feine Trinkers Bei Pinkels Daheim celebrates 25 years of his artistic activity with the first full-length album on Zoharum entitled "A Bug's Life". Keen observers of our activity certainly know his name, for instance from a common vinyl 7-incher entitled "Both Sides of The Looking Glass" shared with Bisclaveret duo or from the composition "Enigmatic Visions", which appeared on a commemorative compilation "07|100|15"... "A Bug's Life" is the tenth full-length album in the discography of Feine Trinkers Bei Pinkels Daheim. It was being created, like the previous ones, for several years and is another conscious artistic statement. Seven compositions included here are of a collage nature and combine echoes of post-industrial ambient, drone music, musique concrete, field recordings and even plunderphonics. On his first studio album since "Die Legende vom Heiligen Trinker" from 2011, Jürgen Eberhard consciously continues his sonic quest on a depleted terrain and he manages to avoid traps of empty experiments. "A Bug's Life" is at the same time an atmospheric, and even accessible, album, and sonically elaborate and demanding of the listener. [press-release]

Genetic Transmission -- "Last" -- CD -- €10
2015 Zoharum, ZOHAR IYHHH 009-2, (ltd. 444)
'Last' is the latest Genetic Transmission album. Distributed only as a handful of CDRs a few years ago, it is only now that it appears as a regular CD release as part of the IYHHH series. The idea behind the recording of this material was to the creation of sonic miniatures, short forms created from the acoustic preparations or electro-acoustic sources resulting in numerous sound experiments which Tomasz Twardawa has been known of. As a result, the album is composed of fifteen tracks in total, mostly shorter tracks, which are more than one hour of music. 'Last' is the end of a chapter, as the title indicates. This is the last studio album in the discography of Genetic Transmission. This one is the end and the summary of Tomasz Twardawa's activities under this banner. And also the last, 9th part of the IYHHH series, presenting interesting discoveries or unusual sounds from Polish artists in an unconventional way. The album is released in an ecopack with a postcard and limited to 444 hand-numbered copies. [press-release]

A resident of a big cemetery, where he entombed his free will? A puppet? But in whose hands? Hoarfrost & Inner Vision Laboratory -- "Decline" -- CD -- €10
2010 Zoharum, ZOHAR 010-2
Both Hoarfrost and Inner Vision Laboratory are young projects, but it would be an understatement to call them 'newcomers.' Each of them has already released debut albums alongside numerous split releases, collaborations, web extended plays and compilation tracks. Thanks to them they gathered a substantial following among experimental music listeners. It was just a question of time when the men behind the projects would collaborate on a release. The result is 'Decline' – a tale of descending into the pits of madness in 8 parts. Inspired by two poems, 'Madman' and 'Modern Icarus,' takes you on a journey into the realms of dark thoughts. With such a clear concept, it's no wonder that the music is cinematic, thus slowly building images in the listener's head. Face the stillness, but remember: something is lingering in the corner. Hudak, John -- "Helene Marie: Reinterpretations" -- 2 CD -- €10
2002 Alluvial Recordings, A11, (ltd. 500)
When John Hudak recorded the "Don't Worry About Anything; I'll Talk To You Tomorrow" compact disk for Alluvial in early 1998, through a series of events, we ended up in possession of an extra piece. We had always intended to release it in some format but remained unsure how to use it. We approached John with the idea of presenting the piece to other composers, many of whom we had in mind prior to raising the idea with John. Upon receiving John's OK, we set about sending it to the composers we chose and a couple of John's choosing. The project ended up taking a lot longer than anticipated. It was well worth the wait. The first track on disc one is the original piece by John Hudak. All other pieces are reinterpretions or reworkings of this piece by Jason Lescalleet, Marc Behrens, Sukora, Peter Duimelinks, John Hudak himself, Francisco Lopez, Eric Lanzillotta, Frans de Waard and Leif Elggren. The CD's are packaged in a 12 page booklet which includes photo work from John Hudak and Rachael Jackson. [label info]

Hybryds -- "The Rhythm of the Ritual / Ein Phallischer Gott" -- 2 CD -- €14
1994/2016 Zoharum, ZOHAR 116-2, (ltd. 500)
Zoharum continues reissuing past works of one of the most interesting projects coming from the 1980s underground - Hybryds. ”The Rhythm of the Ritual / Ein Phallischer Gott” is the fifth instalment in the reissue series of Hybryds classic releases... Sandy tells a few words about the period: In the 1990s only small independent labels existed which had their own area to cover distributionwise hoping to spread our music in the world. ”The Rhythm of the Rituals” (1994, Charnel Music) and ”Ein Phallischer Gott” (1997, Crowd Control Activities) shared some songs. There were no official media supporting this world of “underground” music. Acid and rave became popular in the “commercial” scene. Pro Tools was the magic word. But we made our music live on the 8-track. The only sequences were the drum machines. We stayed loyal to working the old-fashioned way. It's the more rhythmical and ethnical side of Hybryds, lots of percussion, played acoustically, or sampled and looped, or from drum machines. Some of the basic music was from the 1980s but by then we worked on a reel-to-reel 8-track tape recorder with a bigger mixing desk. Livewise we started to transfer to our cyberpunk period (as visible in the live version of ”Whisper”). Depending on the demand we had two live shows, the “magical” or the cyberpunk. It was also the time when Yasnaia and me did the live shows alone. We did not work live on stage with others anymore. We had a manager, Patty Hele from Motherdance. It was easier to travel and perform with two people only. Yasnaia released her solo album and started playing live with her solo project... The first CD collects tracks from two studio releases ”The Rhythm of the Ritual” and ”Ein Phallischer Gott”. The live CD contains live versions of the studio CD (some taken from the live Obuh vinyl LP) and some extras, like an unreleased song ”Dusk Falling”... The album has been digitally remastered from the original master tapes by none else but Sandy Nys, who also provided the cover based on the previous editions. The CDs are housed in a digipak sleeve and the album is strictly limited to 500 copies. [press-release]

Hybryds -- "The Ritual Should Be Kept Alive" -- CD -- €10
1991/2015 Zoharum, ZOHAR 089-2, (ltd. 500)
Zoharum continues reissuing past works of one of the most interesting projects coming from the 1980s underground - Hybryds. This album is the fourth instalment in the reissue series of Hybryds classic releases. It is an expanded reissue of ”The Ritual Should Be Kept Alive (1)” EP released back in 1991. That release featured only the first part of the title composition. The Zoharum edition was extended to a 70-minute full album with the other two parts of ”The Ritual Should Be Kept Alive” included plus one more bonus song... Contrary to the previous releases (”Mythical Music from the 21st Century” and ”Music for Rituals” - both reissued on Zoharum – with lots of short pieces), ”The Ritual Should Be Kept Alive” contains slowly-evolving, long pieces which will hypnotise the listener with their sonic magic. Four songs on this album come from the same period, so it sounds very cohesive. And because three of them were not published before, ”The Ritual Should Be Kept Alive” v.2014 might be treated as a new album... The album has been digitally remastered from the original stereo cassette master by none else but Sandy Nys, who also provided the cover based on the previous editions. This is the ritual music at its best. Now you can enjoy it in the best digital quality. The CD is housed in a digipak sleeve and the album is strictly limited to 500 copies. [press-release]

Hybryds -- "Soundtrack For The Antwerp Zoo Aquarium" -- CD -- €10
1995/2011 Zoharum, ZOHAR 022-2
The reissue of a long-deleted classic album by this legendary Belgian project. 'Soundtrack for the Antwerp Zoo Aquarium' is an unusual album, even in comparison with other Hybryds works. It was created especially for the 150th anniversary of the Antwerp Zoo. Music composed by Sandy and Hermann (of Ah-Cama Sotz) was woven in between the sounds of dolphins, killer whales and the noise of the underwater world. The Zoo director wrote the following in the preface: "Soundtrack for the Antwerp Zoo Aquarium" is a musical journey of the similar stature as "20 000 Leagues Under the Sea" by Julius Verne. Let it be the best recommendation for those who haven't had a chance to get to know to one of the best and most interesting albums in the Hybryds discography. [press-release]

Inner Vision Laboratory & Nepenthe -- "Ambit" -- CD -- €10
2014 Zoharum, ZOHAR 066-2, (ltd. 400)
Two years after well-received "Perpetua" album, INNER VISION LABORATORY returns to Zoharum with their new album entitled "Ambit". Not a solo venture, but a collaborative effort with young, but promising NEPENTHE project. The album was 3 years in the making when they were searching for a common language and fiddling with sonic matter using the Internet in this respect, they have created a monolith - a very cohesive, yet symbiotic world. It might be easily labelled as "ambient", yet they break the patterns of that style. "Ambit" is composed of 7 compositions, clocking in at 50 minutes. It is composed of beautiful, yet unsettling melodies, for those who are fascinated with sounds coming from Cyclic Law and Loki Foundation labels, but also for new-comers to the genre. For those open-minded for something new and touching, a kind of music painted with the whole palette of colours and sounds. [press-release]

2014 Zoharum, ZOHAR 071-2 / Beast Of Prey, BOP 79, (ltd. 300)
iNsCissorS returns with its fourth full length release "The Circus of Ichneumons", delving deeper into the cinematic themes hinted from previous works. Within the four acts of the album, expansive melodies ranging from baroque to ethereal and avant-garde create the soundtrack for a film or a theatrical play, that aches to be realized. Vincent Andelmoth is the director of this dream act, Aimaproject the main narrator and the rest of the cast is full of special guests, including Maciej "Dragos" Mehring from Bisclaveret, Evor Ameisie, Michiel Spape from H.E.R.R. and Annamaria Bernadette Christian. This imaginary travelling company introduces to us the life cycle of the ichneumons. The mysterious members of this circus satirize the pestilence of man over nature and its similarities with the parasitic insect. Parasites can be found amongst all species. [press-release]

"Mnemosyne & The Structure Of Time" is a translation of the scenes that preceded the Earth’s decline in “Orbis Terrarum Requiem” into the sounds of iNsCissorS’ “Cinematic Ambient” where Mnemosyne, the ancient Hellenic Titan goddess of memory and remembrance and the inventress of language and words orchestrates the sequence of events and guides you throughout the complex cluster of the structure of time downwards to her lake in Hades where initiates used to drink in order to remember and bear memories along their journey through life... iNsCissorS’ third full-length album is a new journey through places beyond the Earth’s surface composed and performed by Vincent Andelmoth but with the also greatly important feature and additional composing and arrangements of Jason Andelmoth... Angel W. Black features giving her own enchanting touch with her astonishing voice either when lamenting as a queen that passed to silence or when invoking Hecate from Hades! Finally, as in every album the artwork is an inseparable part of the concept of iNsCissorS. This time the images cloaking the music are designed by the well known photographer/image maker John Santerineross (www.santerineross.com) who gave life to the image of Mnemosyne in his own unique way capturing the atmosphere of the album through his camera and translating it to another work of art! Jarl / Envenomist -- "Tunguska Event" -- CD -- €10
2014 Zoharum, ZOHAR 083-2, (ltd. 300)
A long time ago we discovered little known musician called Erik Jarl. We really liked his first albums and we were watching his music mature over the years. So when Erik contacted us with the offer concerning releasing his album we jumped at the chance. Erik has teamed up with David Reed aka Envenomist to create a sonic reenactment of the Tunguska event. It was ”was a large explosion which occurred near the Podkamennaya Tunguska River in what is now Krasnoyarsk Krai, Russia, at about 07:14 on June 30, 1908” [Wikipedia]. It flattened 2,000 km2 of the forest and it caused glowing sunsets on the horizon. There are many theories concerning the cause of this particular event. Some scientists claim it was connected with an asteroid or comet that burst in the air above the region, others claim that it might have been a small black hole passing near the Earth. The mystery is still unsolved... The music, presented here in five parts, is full of oily drones and industrial blasts intertwined with unsettling ambient textures. The sound on this recording is of complex and mature nature, which hardly comes as a surprise when thinking about years both musicians spent mastering their skills (David with Envenomist and Luasa Raelon; Erik both in IRM and Skin Area, and solo known simply as Jarl). It is an interesting piece of work for those who search for something on the fringes of electronic music... The CD is housed in an ecopak sleeve and is strictly limited to 300 copies. [label info]

Jazkamer & Smegma -- "Endless Coast" -- CD -- €10
2007 No Fun Productions, NFP16
A collaboration between American underground psychedelic/noise pioneers (and still kicking hard now for over 30 years) Smegma and Norweigan noise/metal masters Jazkamer. From two totally different worlds and approaches to sound a totally original abstract language is born creating an imaginary coast that extends from the brutality of the Scandinavian frozen seas to the dark and mysterious rock filled beaches of the American northwest - a landscape full of strange creatures and beings, an eternal and endless coast. Recorded and mixed at Smegma’s legendary home base Portland studio. [press-release]

Jazzkammer -- "Mort Aux Vaches" -- CD -- €10
2005 Mort Aux Vaches
Last year Marhaug's duo with John Hegre as the ongoing Jazzkammer was in The Netherlands to play the Earational festival and took up the occassion to record a session at the VPRO radio studio and now being released in what should be known by now as the John Peel sessions for underground music: Staalplaat's Mort Aux Vaches series. This is not the first entry for noise in the series, following Merzbow and the Sensorband. Jazzkammer has one piece to play of sonic overload, building from scratch. A highpitched tone, scraping the surface with a contactmicrophone and from there building things up by adding layers of nasty frequencies. As the piece evolves the high end techniques of laptopnoise start to mingle with low-end electronics. This work, a straightforward, unedited recording is a bit on the regular side of noise. But even at that, Jazzkammer on an ordinary day is way more interesting than many other noise heads on a good day. [FdW, Vital Weekly]

The Joy Of Nature -- "The Empty Circle Part III - Anitya" -- CD -- €10
2010 Rage In Eden, RAGE 74
Anitya is that which has no existence in the beginning and no existence in the end. Its nature is impermanence. The record was created in two different and very special periods of time and it musically unites both western and eastern sounds. The tracks contained are the musical expression of different kinds of dreams. It consists of folk, experimental, psychedelic and industrial elements, and even classical music but sounding, at various places, like ritual music. The structures of the tracks owe as much to classical as to psychedelic music. [press-release]

K2 / GX Jupitter-Larsen -- "Convulsing Vestibular" -- CD -- €10
2014 4iB Records, 4iB CD/1213/005, (ltd. 250)
30 years is a long time for 2 people from different corners of the world to come full circle and meet again. Old time buddies K2 (Kimihide Kusafuka) and GX Jupitter-Larsen (The Haters/Survival Research Laboratories) are both presented together on this split CD release after their paths first crossed in the 1980’s when they were actively involved in the underground populist artistic movement of mail art and homemade audio tape trading. In 1999, they met once again in Kyoto, Japan where they performed together on stage dressed up in Lucha Libre wrestling masks. This show also saw GX rigged-up in a championship wrestling belt that had been specially reconstructed to generate pure harsh noise through a built in microphone and distortion pedal. In many ways, this release presents a significant homecoming of sorts, where 2 old friends cross paths once more to showcase their unique styles of sonic mayhem together... [label info]

L'Effet C'Est Moi -- "Il Sole A Mezzanotte" -- CD -- €10
2012 Rage In Eden, RAI90, (ltd. 500)
It was the project's debut released as a CD. In the distant past that is 2007, War Office Propaganda released a record L'Effet C'est Moi -"Tomber En Heros". After 5-year-time L'Effet C'est Moi releases another record, not in War Office Propaganda but in Rage in Eden. The time I did not listen to the music, composed by Emanuelle, let me see the big change that had taken place in the music. The new record is definitely more mature. The music stuns from the very first beats that intrinsically impel my associations to works of Blood Axis. It is not a copy but it deals with similar aesthetics. The music is full of space and pugnacity. Recommended! [press-release]

L'Effet C'Est Moi -- "Tomber En Heros" -- CD -- €10
2007 War Office Propaganda / Rage In Eden, WOP39
Adopting a quote from Friedrich Nietzche as name, this new interesting music entity rises from Recanati, Italy, same hometown of Der Feuerkreiner, with whom it seems to share a passion for epic, neoclassical and martial compositions. L'Effet C'Est Moi ("the result is me") refers, in particular, to a concept with which the famous German philosopher suggested an identification between the ruling class and the results achieved by the community. The idea of power and domination dwells among the two parts in which the CD is subdivided, the first coping with the splendour of the Roman Empire at its zenith, the second with the dark sides of its might, that have survived through the ages and formed the totalitarian regimes of the 20th Century. A magnificent world of conquests, armies, battles, emperors and immortality, through excellent orchestral keyboards, epic piano themes and hammering martial percussions. 12 tracks, approx. 44 minutes running time, CD in digipack. Law -- "Wading Knee-Deep in Your Blood" -- CD -- €10
2002 Old Europa Cafe, OECD 039
Oroginally issued in 1997 as blood-red vinyl LP in a very limited edition on OEC and long time sold-out! This album was re-released into digital format completely re-mastered by Thomas Dimuzio at Grench Studios. Original album plus some bonus material for a total length of 67 minutes of obsessing harsh & heavy power-industrial sounds for a new LAW! "The composite picture of man that merges from the art of our time is the gigantic figure of an aborted embryo whose limbs suggests a vaguely anthropoid shape... screams in abysmal terror at the universe at large"... For lovers of grups such as Propergol, Genocide Organ, Slogun... An album which needs to be discovered! [press-release]

Liyr -- "Autour des Ombres" -- CD -- €10
2015 Rage In Eden, RAGE 108
LIYR (side-project of AUSWALHT) from France is a martial act born in 2008. Heavily inspired by neoclassical, bombastic percussions and industrial martial sounds Liyr creates his own characteristic atmosphere. Behind the harshness of the percussions, there is an esoteric thought about Celtic tradition and legends - LIYR is the God of Sea in Celtic myths. But the main idea is that we all live in a changing world dominated by sort of feelings like hate and love, fear and pleasure - in his music and lyrics LIYR talks about all these feelings. Machinefabriek -- "Wendingen" -- CD -- €10
2016 Zoharum, ZOHAR 117-2, (ltd. 300)
This is the third Machinefabriek album (and Rutger Zuydervelt's fourth) released in cooperation with Zoharum. After last year's well-received previous album, "The Measures Taken", containing music to the contemporary dance performance, Rutger prepared "Wendingen" for us. The album which is a compilation and at the same time it is not; which contains recordings of other artists and at the same time is completely fresh look at them through the Zuydervelt's glasses; finally it is an album that contains remixes and at the same time sounds like a completely new Machinefabriek album... In fact, from the beginning of its activity under the name Machinefabriek, Rutger Zuydervelt also acts as a prolific remixer for the likes of Nils Frahm, Balmorhea, Dirk Serries and Amon Tobin. The collection entitled "Wendingen" collects a substantial part of those reworks and contains reinterpretations of tracks by Mensenkinderen, Wouter Van Veldhoven, Fieldhead, Aaron Martin, Coppice, de la mancha, The Moi Non Plus, Djivan Gasparyan, Amon Tobin, Gareth Hardwick, Fiium Shaarrk, Vladimir and Red Stars Over Tokyo. Because they are reconstructions done by, not for, Machinefabriek, "Wendigen" sounds like a completely new album, not a compilation. It is also the proof of the craftsmanship of one of the most interesting figures on the European electronic or experimental music scene... The album is released in a 3-panel ecopak in a strictly limited edition of 300 copies. The cover is based on the original by Rutger Zuydervelt. It was mastered by Lukasz Miernik. The whole production process was overseen by Michal Porwet. [press-release]

Maeror Tri -- "Emotional Engramm" -- CD -- €10
1997/2012 Zoharum, ZOHAR 034-2
The reissue of a long-forgotten classic MAEROR TRI album with stunning new artwork and newly remastered sound. Back in 1997, it turned out to be the last album by this experimental trio of German droners composed of Stefan 'Baraka[h]' Knappe, Martin 'GLIT[s]CH' Gitschel and Helge Siehl. The former two later formed TROUM (Zoharum releases: "Autopoiesis / Nahtscato" and "Seeing-Ear Gods" (A Continuous Journey in Six Parts) and the latter 1000SCHOEN. During their nine-year existence, they recorded a handful of albums and cassettes with their unique mixture of minimalism, industrial, ambient and drone, exploring the brains of potential listeners. "Emotional Engramm" is MAEROR TRI 's most refined effort to date. After years of experimenting, the group came to a characteristic sound composed of layers of electrically/electronically-treated acoustic instruments. Their organic sound achieved the most accessible form on "Emotional Engramm";. Clocking in at just under 80 minutes, the seven tracks presented here show Maeror Tri at its best. The reissue is presented in a lavish 6-panel digipak designed by Marcin Lojek (Ibsen Design, New Nihilism label, Mantichora and Schmerz bands) with a foreword by Martyn Bates (EYELESS IN GAZA). The album has been faithfully remastered by Lukasz Miernik (Dead Cat Mastering). [press-release]

Maeror Tri -- "Meditamentum" -- 2 CD -- €14
1994/2013 Zoharum, ZOHAR 046-2 / New Nihilism, NN X, (ltd. 500)
After a successful reissue of a long-lost classic "Emotional Engramm", MAEROR TRI returns to Zoharum and New Nihilism with another album. This time it is a double, deluxe reissue of both volumes of "Meditamentum" (released previously on Holonom and Manifold respectively). Unavailable for many years, "Meditamentum" is a collection of tracks culled from tape releases and rarities hidden on many compilations. It spans the whole existence of Maeror Tri, starting with 2 tracks from 1989 ending with 3 tracks from 1996. It is a sort of "best of" Maeror Tri, as it tells the story of the bands progress. From rough edges of "Peak Experience" to dreamy soundscapes of "The Beauty of Sadness". "Meditamentum" is also a document of the underground tape scene of the 1980s and 1990s, and of a genius of MAEROR TRI as purveyors of mind-altering sonic experience. It's "Music for the Brain" at its best. The release is presented in a lavish gatefold Japanese vinyl replica designed by Marcin Lojek (Ibsendesign, responsible also for the cover for Zoharum's reissue of "Emotional Engramm"). Each volume is extended with a bonus track making the whole collection 155 minutes long and comprising of 23 tracks. The sound is greatly enhanced by our remastering wizard Lukasz Miernik. "Meditamentum" is co-released by Zoharum and New Nihilism to give you the maximum sonic experience. This double CD is strictly limited to 500 copies. [press-release]

Manson, Charles -- "The Summer Of Hate - The '67 Sessions" -- CD -- €10
2007 Arte Lupo, L182
Charles Manson’s name should be no stranger to lovers of the weird and wonderful, having been sentenced to life without parole for his leadership of the cult “The Family”, who committed several murders in the late ‘60s. Before these events, Charley had high-hopes of becoming a pop star, with his strange psychedelic folk music – bizarrely more fashionable today than ever. Here for the first time are the complete recordings that were made on 11th September 1967 in a rehearsal studio, which went onto be used as demos to try to secure a recording deal, which never happened. Spoken word elements throughout the 18 tracks (just under 45 minutes). Essential for collectors of ‘60s Folk and weird psych freakouts. [label info]

Meizter, K. -- "Tetraphobia" -- CD -- €10
2009 Old Europa Cafe, OECD 117
After channelising all his musical energy into Beyond Sensory Experience for the past two years, K. Meizter finally returns with a new solo exertion. Spawned during the sinister last months of a northern year, Tetraphobia scans through the kafkaesque layers of human anxiety, and continues K. Meizter’s distinctive manipulation of sound, melody and pulse. Following Travelling Light, Dark Matters and the Horologium collaboration Eight Studies in Transition, K. Meizter’s new release develops even more unsettling atmospheres of reflection and alteration. With 10 tracks and over an hour of foreboding avant-garde, Tetraphobia is K. Meizter’s most convincing work this far. Dark and solemn. [press-release]

Moljebka Pvlse -- "Tamon" -- CD -- €10
2004 Segerhuva, SEGER 8
Mathias Josefsons one-man-project Moljebka Pvlse from Stockholm, Sweden here stretches the boundaries of ambient drone-music, perhaps a surprising listen for those accustomed to his other recordings put out by Eibon and Cold Meat Industry to name a few. This work to a larger degree features a sound pallette unarguably harsher than his other recordings. Tons of frenzied, computerized, but crispy clear distortion flows out over you like an ice wall and leaves the listener in a nervous state, begging for a warming aftermath. Static walls of rampant treated guitars and billowing droney backgrounds screaming endlessly out over the cold plains of the earth. Ambient gourmets also get their piece, though somewhat in a more experimental way. Full color digipak. [press-release]

Murmer -- "We Share A Shadow" -- CD -- €10
2007/2009 Helen Scarsdale Agency, HMS 011, (ltd. 475)
Murmer is the pseudonym for Patrick McGinley, a man with several passports which have taken him to many a foreign land in search of found sounds of the unsettled, the forgotten, the mysterious, and the beautiful. His field recordings of activated environments (e.g. resonant industrial spaces, windswept telephone lines, bowed branches, gasping ventilator systems, etc.) originate from all of the locations where he has traveled; yet, the documentation of these sounds is the not the terminus of McGinley's work. He is far more interested in extracting a particular emotional, transcendent, or metaphysical kernel from those sounds, and then recontextualizing that germinated sound into sympathetic compositions of magnificent dronemusik... We Share A Shadow continues where Murmer left off with the exceptional Husk album (in collaboration with Jonathan Coleclough), in spiraling his manipulated field recordings as a slow revelation of the environmental sonorities that undeservedly go unnoticed each and every day. Singing frequencies of a bowed piece of metal undulate against a grey tapestry of rain and rasping insects. Golden overtones from shimmering drones quell what agitated textures reside in McGinley's active field recordings, rendering the aggregate sound a nocturnal opiate with considerable potency... Package features hand water-coloured artwork and letterpress printing. [label info]

Murmer -- "What Are The Roots That Clutch" -- CD -- €10
2012 Helen Scarsdale Agency, HMS 022, (ltd. 400)
It was a cavernous tone that broadcast from a ventilator duct that inspired Patrick McGinley to begin collecting field recordings and working them into his slow-arc compositions. At the time when he heard that particular tone in that particular city at that particular time, he had no gear to recording device on hand. Over the next fifteen years (and counting) McGinley has eased into a peripatetic lifestyle, wandering the European countryside and forests (but never straying too far from the thrum and spark of civilization) in search of the same epiphany with his head rattled to the sound of a cavernous air duct... Around 1996, McGinley adopted the moniker Murmer for his compositional work; and though his work often steps into the quieter realm of sound construction, much of his field recordings and resultant compositions privilege interference and disturbances that occur within any given sound ecology. Those sounds could be the elusive tone from that ventilator, the polyrhythmic chorus of chirping frogs, the abstracted roar from an Arctic wind tearing across the Black Sea, or the metallic skree from a bowed antenna perched atop a Soviet-era observatory. What Are The Roots That Clutch marks McGinley's first full album in nearly 5 years, but it marks an elegant continuation of his previous album We Share A Shadow. The five chapters of this album can't easily be associated with any specific location; instead McGinley overlaps and crosshatches his field recordings and abstractions into acousmatic passages with ghostly, half-melodic qualities. Even the two unprocessed recordings of the album are impossibly complex in their accretions of sound. McGinley's composed pieces embrace lithe, mysterious drones whose mossy, damp atmosphere perfectly situate with tactile crunches, tactile events, and signal noise generation. Eels and leaches would not be out of place in such an environment; but the subaquatic murk snaps into a hallowed manifestation of ritualized minimalism at the album's finale -- one that LaMonte Young and Angus Maclise might have conjured in 1968 with clattering percussive elements and a hypnotic blur of harmonic drone... What Are The Roots That Clutch is limited to 400 copies and comes housed with letterpress artwork. [press-release]

The New Blockaders / Thurston Moore / Jim O'rourke -- "The Voloptulist" -- CD EP -- €10
2006 Hospital Productions, HOS-144
An unbelievable line-up on this one, UK noise icons The New Blockaders team up with erstwhile Sonic Youth bandmates, Thurston Moore and Jim O'Rourke with more than a little help from the reliably jaw-dropping Chris Corsano. The disc is divided into two pieces, the first being the collaboration with Thurston, which turns out to be a particularly obscure drone piece, constituted from hissing feedback tones, tape crackle and some sort of chaotic, mechanical sound sources. The piece evolves infinitesimally over the course of its fourteen minutes, rendering an uncompromising, though highly textured vision of analogue sound sculpting. The other, shorter piece '840 Seconds Over' continues in its predecessor's campaign of high frequency feedback manipulations this time with the addition of some caterwhauling noise oscillator free jazz and typically virtuosic improv drumming from Corsano. It's a real force to be reckoned with, and the crispness of Corsano's kit works perfectly against the hiss and fizz from the tape-heavy, droning elements. It's all over rather too soon (the whole thing clocks in at just over twenty-one minutes), but you can hardly expect anyone to keep up these levels of intensity for prolonged periods, can you? Superb, top-flight noise. [press-release]

Nimh -- "Circles Of The Vain Prayers" -- CD -- €10
2016 Rage In Eden, Rage 110
Giuseppe Verticchio (aka Nimh, Hall of Mirrors, Maribor, Twist of Fate…) is known for his high-quality post industrial dronescapes and ethno-ritual sound productions through various technologies, field recordings, noises and treated acoustic instruments. Since 2002 his materials have been notably published by Rage in Eden, Silentes, Malignant, Eibon Records, Naked Lunch Records… Developed around loops, samples and minimal acoustic sequences, this new Nimh album offers thrilling sonic sound rituals with a distinctive aestheticism which embraces the universe of pantheistic, pagan and animist beliefs. The music originally explores the mystical influences, the meaningful sacred energies, dreamlike hypnotic effects obtained by obsessional sound patterns and cyclical rhythms. «Circles of the Vain Prayers» is a great companion of later works from Nimh, including «Missing Tapes» (Silentes, 2007), «Krungthep Archives» (Silentes, 2011). Your perfect ambient, entrancing and blackened music pilgrimage to revisit sacred places of foreign small scale societies. [press-release]

I haven't heard the music, but my imagination already started. What can we get from fusion of NIMH and Antikatechon? How does it sounds? Who has left the stronger imprint on this album? Noosphera -- "Junghian Epiphanies" -- CD -- €11
Oktagon Records / Misty Circles, OKT 013 / MCR38
Dark ballads of melancholy in the latest effort of Cesare Marilungo a.k.a. Noosfera. Acustic guitar and voice make the album, subtle layers of synths or piano phrases backing it up and underlining the intimate character of the compositions. Junghian Epiphanies is calm, contemplative, tastes of nocturnal reflections. One almost gets the impression that Cesare is reading is thougths, sitting on a chair, smoking a cigarette, sipping red wine. With the last track, however, a twelve-minute piece of dark droning ambient, he refers clearly to his earlier works, were electronics made the game and the guitar backed it up if at all. Junghian is a great piece of work, which nothing but confirms that the Italian folk noir scene is alive more than ever. [Gianfri, Darklife zine]

Obscene Noise Korporation -- "Primitive Terror Action / The Rape Of The Blue Planet" -- 2 CD -- €10
2014 Malignant Records, TumorCD78
If Negru Voda is the bastard step child of Megaptera, then O.N.K. is the brutish, backwoods cousin with an insatiable thirst for schadenfreude. Pure industrial sounds and cold mechanized rhythms from the blackened heart of the legendary Peter Nystrom, this sprawling 2 CD collects every recording ever done under the O.N.K. moniker, and adds copious amounts of all new material. Disc 1 contains not only the 11 original recordings from the Primitive Terror Action LP (1997) on Slaughter Productions, but also the track “One Happy Gravel Pit And The Death” from the 1999 Cold Meat Industry compilation, Esthetiks of Cruelty, and a multitude of demo tracks and otherwise unreleased material. Disc 2, The Rape of the Blue Planet, are all new recordings from 2013 and 2014. Collectively, you can expect nothing but the rawest and most primitive of factory sounds and analogue terror. Very little layering and barely any overdubs, just strictly saturated frequencies and pulsating chunks of distortion drenched monstrosities. It’s Swedish, it’s industrial, it’s stripped down and downright ugly, just the way you want your Obscene Noise Korporation to be. Features vocal input and additional sounds from J. Stillings of Steel Hook Prostheses and a surprise track at the end exclusive to the physical CD. Layout and design by L. Kerr (Steel Hook Prostheses) in 8 panel 2CD digipak. [press-release]

The music on the album is not "nice" martial, there are no neoclassical notes, no clear structures, no bombastic melodies. In return, we get a raw industrial sounds located in the area of achievements of the legendary project Turbund Sturmwerk. Howling sirens, chaotic rhythms, noises and creaks make feeling of confusion and strong sense of unspecified anxiety. The album is dominated by austerity, the sounds are sharp and prickly. Organistaion Toth reminds us that martial industrial have had such roots, martial is idea, and the music is only the background to express beliefs and values. [press-release]

Ouroboros -- "Opus Tartari" -- CD -- €10
2011 Zoharum, ZOHAR 018-2
'Opus Tartari' is the latest album of Italian dark ambient project which - in its leader's own words - after years of esoteric and alchemist studies decided to transfer his own experiences into music. Ouroboros should be then treated as a medium used in search for its own philosophical stone. Compositions included on the album lead the listener into the world of antique and medieval times due to their tunes and the singing in Latin. Mystical, slightly sacral character of the tracks has become its leitmotif recognisible for the band. Marco Grosso known for his collaboration with many session musicians (with Claudio Dondo of Runes Order) asked a lot of vocalists (Nuna Luna - soprano voice, Sorath Isis, Aleph Zero, Malice) to participate in the recordings as well. This resulted in the creation of 'Opus Tartari' - an intriguing, emotional, full of unsettling beauty and esoterica journey. The album can be likened to early releases of Diamanda Galas, The Moon and the Nightspirit and The Moon Lay Hidden Beneath a Cloud. The album has been released in a 3-panel digipak. [press-release]

Outofsight -- "Vodka Likes Smoke (The Damned Poets)" -- CD -- €10
2007 Rage In Eden, RAGE 51
Poor alcohol and smoky interior of a pub. The common despair shouted out in rare moments of sobriety. The terrible, absurd atmosphere of Poland in 50’s and 60’s of last century. Young people, poets, writers, painters and musicians thrown out of „happy and ideal” society created by communistic authorities. People sinking their dreams in vodka. The works of those damned: Kazimierz Raton (1942-1983), Marek Hlasko (1934-1969) and Edward Stachura (1937-1979) was inspiration for this moving album. Musically it is perfectly blended mix of cold wave, neofolk, pop and even echoes of decadent cabaret with different guest vocals. With no doubt one of the most interesting albums from Rage In Eden Records / WOP in 2007. [press-release]

Rapoon -- "Blue Days" -- CD -- €10
2015 Zoharum, ZOHAR 110-2, (ltd. 500)
After three well-received, new albums ("Time-loop Anomalies" [2012], "To West and Blue" [2013] and "Fall of Drums" [2014]) and a series of reissues and archive collections, Rapoon returns to Zoharum with a brand new album. "Blue Days" is completely different from those previous releases. While on those three albums long, slowly developing compositions dominated, here there are as many as fourteen of them with the longest being less than eight minutes long, and the two shortest only forty seconds long. This is a record of ideas, sketches. The album is dominated with conciseness; however, all the songs compose one bigger piece. They show that Robin Storey is constantly looking for new artistic paths. [press-release]

Rapoon -- "Fall Of Drums" -- CD -- €10
2014 Zoharum, ZOHAR 078-2, (ltd. 500)
It has been a year since the release of highly-acclaimed album entitled "To West and Blue". After various archive releases (the second volume in the rarities collection entitled "Seeds in the Tide" plus expanded reissue of a classic album "The Fires of the Borderlands") and new albums on other labels ("Psi-Transient" and "Conduits And Estuaries"), Robin Storey aka Rapoon presents a carefully woven new masterpiece called "Fall of Drums"... The new Rapoon album marks his return not only to the analogue electronics territories, but also to ethnic rhythms which he was known for in the very early days of his solo project. We are back to Middle Eastern territories, to deserts, opium hallucinations and ghosts whisper amidst the sand. 4 long hypnotic tracks of staggering beauty take us on an hour-long journey into your subconsciousness. In other words, it is another top quality album from Robin Storey... The CD is housed in gatefold sleeve in the vein of Japanese-style vinyl replica and is strictly limited to 500 copies. Rapoon -- "The Fires of the Borderlands" -- 2 CD -- €14
1998/2014 Zoharum, ZOHAR 067-2, (ltd. 500)
It's been 16 years since the release of Rapoon's masterpiece entitled "The Fires of the Borderlands". It is arguably his best known work which is still much appreciated by both old fans of his music and new-comers to it. Long out-of-print and much sought after, this classic has now received a well-deserved expanded reissue treatment... Originally, "The Fires of the Borderland" is comprised of 11 tracks full of evocative ambient sonic textures. These sounds generate images of desert lands somewhere in uncharted countries in Africa or Middle East suspended in time. It is a chronicle of those lands which was found buried in the scorching sands. You can almost feel the texture of it in every second of this album which conjures up ghosts of people from those lands with writhing snakes at their feet... This special edition is comprised of two discs. The first is the main album which is mastered from the original tapes, therefore, it sounds significantly better to the 1998 version. The bonus disc is a 40-minute live recording for the San Francisco-based radio KFJC which again proves that Robin Storey has mastered the ability to creating haunting sonic atmospheres... This expanded edition of the album is packaged in a digipak sleeve and is limited to 500 copies worldwide. [press-release]

Rapoon -- "Seeds In The Tide, Vol. 4" -- 2 CD -- €14

In the first one we find songs from the years 2005-2007 from rare, limited releases, various artists compilations plus a remix of Rapoon made by the project Xela. This first disc, almost 75 minutes long, features a variety of recordings presenting Robin Storey's project from different angles. The second disc is a recording of the next concert from Rhiz in Vienna. This time it is a little shorter, only 45-minute-long appearance, very consistent, strongly contrasting with the first disc... The CDs are housed in a digipak sleeve and the album is strictly limited to 500 copies. The cover was designed by Maciej Mehring based on Robin Storey's paintings. "Seeds in the Tide Volume 4" was mastered by Pawel Bartnik (Centrala Studio). The whole production process was overseen by Michal Porwet. [press-release]

Rasalhague -- "Rage Inside The Window" -- CD -- €10
2011 Malignant Records, TUMOR CD49
Following the self released 3inch CDr from a few years back, Rage Inside the Window is the astounding formal debut of Indiana based dark ambient artist Rasalhague, offering some of the most haunting, dread filled, and yet dynamic atmospheres we've come across in some time. Inspired by the true events of a young girl neglectfully imprisoned in filth and squalor by her thoughtless and uncaring mother. Rage Inside the Window takes the listener into the mind of a savagely depraved soul. Don't expect ambient of the spaced out, blissful, and softly textured variety. This is dirty and impenetrably dark, with an intertwining mass of demonic squalls, intense probing, highly ominous tonal drones, distant monolithic pulsations, and bleak isolationism. 6 lengthy tracks of pure psychological horror are presented here, with each piece segueing into each other in transforming waves, progressively getting darker, brooding, and more menacing as it goes. Finally, with the final track, some semblance of solace is achieved. Reference points can be made to Atrium Carceri, recent Raison d'Etre, and the like, but ultimately, Rasalhague operates within its own realm. In 6 panel, full color DVD Digipak. [press-release]

S.E.T.I. -- "Baikal" -- CD -- €10
2011 Power & Steel, PAS 31
The aural world of BAIKAL evokes a crystalline landscape full of huge and breathtaking images, guiding the listener to arcane places, lakes and steppes. This new output of Andrew Lagowski aka S.E.T.I. is the result of the examination with the idea of old and sunken crafts being hidden in lakes while surfacing through the water in abandoned areas where only few people would live and survive. Calm and smooth soundscapes and atmospheric synth waves loaded with digitized voices and textured layers of noises and samples. BAIKAL is another step further in S.E.T.I.'s history of deep sounding ambient music. An evolving, moving and skittering Masterpiece! [press-release]

Sala Delle Colonne -- "Il Destino Della Orchestra Aurora" -- CD -- €12
2013 Old Europa Cafe, OECD 166
Third full length CD by this Italian Martial Industrial project after their sucesfull album out on CMI. “Il Destino della Aurora Orchestra” CD album by SALA DELLE COLONNE, in his symbolic title already declines his strong intentions, with the word “Destino” that can be translated in English either with "Destiny" or with "Doom". We can read it as "The Destiny of Aurora Orchestra", when the September 8, 1943, during the Second World War, the musicians was divided (someone followed the Republic of Salo, others went with the Partisans), to symbolize and remember the tragedy of separation in Italy that followed the end of fascism and the outbreak of civil war that put brothers against brothers. And we can listen it as "The Doom of Aurora Orchestra", following the neoclassical martial orchestration in doom key adopted by Sala delle Colonne in some tracks, an "orchestral doom" like the evolution of the style used in earlier work “XX A.D”. Another great leap in quality and innovation of this eclectic Italian artist, by now well known even outside the neoclassical / martial world in which it was - so far - located. [press-release]

Sigmarsson, Sigtryggur Berg -- "So Long" -- CD -- €10
2015 Helen Scarsdale Agency, HMS027
A journey through time, perhaps, for a daydreamer floating in a small boat amidst the radiant hues of a midnight sun. That daydreamer in this instance is the Icelandic artist Sigtryggur Berg Sigmarsson, best known for his electro-surrealism in Stilluppsteypa. He has long been an artist of extremes and absurdities -- mania fueled performances, wildly scribbled drawings, and Haflerian audio shock-therapy, on one side; and on the other, a profound meditation on austere shape, form, and mood cast through similar media. Sigmarsson will intermingle these sentiments in slippery juxtaposition and assemblage, with beguiling, haunting, and / or charming results. So Long aligns itself firmly within that latter aesthetic of crypto-minimalism which began to germinate some 20 years ago. At that time, Stilluppsteypa was a trio who had recently eschewed their art-punk trappings, drunkenly scheming to corner the market at Documenta with deconstructivist drone and 21th century circuitry. Sigmarsson would find himself in his own studio, crafting sympathetic works to Stilluppsteypa; but these were directed inward as wounded, naked, and vulnerable concoctions reflective of Sigmarsson getting lost in his own little world. So Long quietly simmered in his head over the years; and with the completion of this album, we now have a sublime gesture of polar impressionism flecked with hallucinatory ambience, Vaseline-smeared crackle, and hauntological displacement. This album had originally been planned for release through the impeccably curated Intransitive Recordings, but that publishing house shuddered its doors before this could see the light of day. Sigmarsson self-released a condensed version of the album on the artbook / cassette If You Have Any Questions, Let Me Ask. The Helen Scarsdale Agency is delighted, honored, and humbled to publish this dronescaping threnody in its full radiance and blur. [press-release]

Sister Loolomie / Polaris -- "Out Of Space" -- 3"CD-R -- €4
2005 Abgurd Subdivision, AB-14, (ltd. 256)
Mini-split of two Russian drone ambient projects. Sister Loolomie presented a beautiful composition "The Colour Out Of Space" painted with the whole palette of emotional colours. Recognizable sound of the project received a new vibe: granulated guitar crackling is amplified with harmonic melodic influxes evolving in noise apotheosis. The track of Polaris - "The Shadow Out Of Space" - is much more introvertive and filled with gloomy interstices and wandering cold winds.

Spiracle -- "Ananta" -- 2 CD -- €10
2009 Helen Scarsdale Agency, HMS 017, (ltd. 300)
Hitoshi Kojo (aks Spiracle) professes to have some difficulties in falling asleep. When sleep comes to him, it can often arrive at dawn, when the colors of the sun begin to break through the darkness of night and when some are just rising after their own good night's sleep. Ananta is a twin set of compositions that urge the listener toward a dreamless sleep-state, while reflecting the glowing warmth of a blossoming sunrise. In constructing the two variations of Ananta, Kojo began with finely tuned drones extracted from a Dilruba and a Sarangi, and applied a process of merging sympathetic field recordings and other tonal interferences alongside those instrumental sounds. The resulting pieces are elliptically static drone compositions that brightly shimmer with hues of gold, crimson, and aquamarine... One of the two variations of Ananta was published back in 2006 as a micro-edition CDR through Mystery Sea. In composing the Mystery Sea version, Kojo purposefully eschewed the representational sounds of the "Night Ocean Drones" espoused by the label, opting for these aforementioned concepts. On this piece of tiny churning textures streaming along a linear path, Kojo's piece nearly achieves infinity, which happens to be the translation from Sanskrit of "ananta." While other works from Kojo enjoy the darkly elegant arches found in select recordings from Organum and Lawrence English, the Mystery Sea Version of Ananta fits more of the tradition of the Roland Kayn, Yoshi Wada, and Charlemagne Palestine in constructing pieces which require endurance, lest you succumb to Kojo's audio hypnosis. The Strato Version of Ananta is a previously unreleased composition, that bends and undulates around a fundamental drone, all the while still maintaining the sun-flecked glints magnified in the Mystery Sea version. Tarab -- "I'm Lost" -- CD -- €10
2014 23five, 23five 019
A schizoid-concrete opus of environmental sounds heightened, stimulated, decontextualized, and teased into a psychic puzzle of industrialized and post-industrialized detritus, I'm Lost marks another milestone in the ever impressive catalogue from Australian sound-artist Eamon Sprod, who adopts the moniker Tarab for his endeavors. The title is one that explodes with a multitude of meaning. There's the geographical frustration in losing one's way as the surrounding landmarks fail to match with whatever technology may be in use (e.g. a sextant, a compass, an iPhone, a torn map, one's poor memory of a childhood neighborhood, etc.). There's the psychological implications of being lost from the existential narratives that we have scripted for ourselves due to broken relationships, failed jobs, dead relatives, natural disasters, the hand of God, etc. In addition to these possibilities, Sprod proposes that the notion of "lost" could also be an inversion of the idea of the "found object" or the "found sound," instead becoming the "lost object" or the "lost sound." Sprod's semantic wordplay is hardly a conceptual gimmick, as he fully immerses himself in the confusional framework while maintaining a consummate technical prowess over his field recordings. The compositional approach is rhizomatic, with dead-ends, wrong turns, and reprisals of these same dead-ends and wrong turns, offering a blackhumor sneer at the stubbornness of humanity's inability to learn from our mistakes (e.g. pollution, blight, poverty, disease, etc). Within the album's harsh edits and disjointed collages, Sprod renders sound with dysphoric associations through his vacant drift, crumbled gravel, scalding plasma-tube frequencies, and putrid factory noise. I'm Lost achieves the same psychological gravity as heard in the works of Sudden Infant, P16.D4, and John Duncan with an even greater sense of dislocation from those pioneers of radical tape splicing. Tarab -- "Take All The Ships From The Harbour, And Sail Them Straight Into Hell" -- CD -- €10
2009 23five, 23five 014, (ltd. 500)
The title to this album from Tarab (nee Eamon Sprod) is striking enough in its allusions of damnation, with a watery grave a potential outcome from human activity impacting the earth. So, it may be stating the obvious that the corroded locations where mankind has scarred the surface of the earth feature prominently in the work of this Melbourne based sound artist. The residual elements of these sites become the agents for metaphor and allegory in Tarab's work, documented through field recording and sympathetic actions with found objects from those sites. One such location that features prominently in Take All of the Ships... is Angel Island in the San Francisco Bay. Once the home of an immigration station at the turn of the 20th Century and later a Nike Missile site for the US military, Angel Island now rests in the hands of the US National Park Service, which has left some of the buildings to succumb to the forces of decay. From the sounds culled from this site and others closer to his antepodean home, Tarab diligently overlays and stiches together a highly tactile composition with very little digital treatments to speak of. Take All of the Ships... opens with an ominous rumble whose frequencies appear to emerge from the center of the Earth and liquefying the surface upon impact. As these tones ebb and flow, Tarab unveils as revolving series of exaggerated details from a hyperbolic gash of two heavy pieces of metal grinding against themselves to a toxic chorale of nighttime insects to sand, wind, and surf detourned into sedimentary white noise. Tarab's compositional sensibility shifts throughout the album, at first sparsely situating these sounds into shadowy vignettes. Gradually, Tarab coalesces this sublime opus into an arcing crescendo which exhibits sustained harmonics rarely heard in the best of the contemporary dronemusik technicians much less from the realm of sound ecology. [press-release]

Tarab -- "Wind Keeps Even Dust Away" -- CD -- €10
2007 23five, 23five 010, (ltd. 500)
Eamon Sprod (aka Tarab) professes a romantic attachment to the notion that the world is falling apart, a terminal process only enhanced by the intrinsic obsolescence from the output of consumer culture. Yet, this Australian sound artist is not one to wallow in the nihilism of such poetics, rather he counterpoints these thoughts with the allegorical implications of his nom de plume. Tarab is an Arabic word that doesn't readily translate into English, but it might be best defined as the ecstatic surrender one can experience when listening to music. Through installation, performance, and composition, Sprod reinterprets the physical detritus of the landscape within a hypothetical topography where dirt, soot, and smog emerge as privileged materials, in to which he has grafted the potential for a transcendent response... Field recordings are fundamental to this creative process, bolstered by sympathetic sounds activated by Sprod's own hands rummaging through crumbling leaves, rusted bits of metal, broken concrete, and shattered glass, just to name some of the more obvious sources. Wind Keeps Even Dust Away is only the second documentation of Sprod's compositions; yet, it is an accomplished work on par with the best of contemporary sound ecologists (e.g. Chris Watson, Eric La Casa, Toshiya Tsunoda, etc.). On this album, Sprod presents an intertwining series of compacted collages that tease aquatic references from abandoned and overlooked sites of the arid Australian landscape. Every sound of a pipe gurgling with water is but a mirage of sand, rust, and dirt cleverly tricking the audience's collective ear... With its subtle transitions and evolving sound structures, Wind Keeps Even Dust Away figures into the models of psycho-geographical wandering, as Sprod explores sets of roughly cut textures, resonant frequencies, and atmospheric vibrations that are intrinsic to an imagined space and then shifts into another with its particular idiosyncrasies. While the ecstasy that the word tarab implies may not be an immediate reaction to this album, wonder and discovery certainly are as experienced through this exemplary album of re-engineered sonic dislocation. Viodre -- "Interpol Alchemi" -- CD -- €10
2011 Hospital Productions, HOS-161
Somehow, Viodre inexplicably combine Merzbow‘s constant flow with Whitehouse‘s power electronics, Yen Pox‘s doom and the more subtle looped constructions of Daniel Menche – sometimes in the same track at the same time. This unpredictability extends even to the volume, where things will be quiet one second and unbearably loud the next. Ultimately, Interpol Alchemi isn’t a pleasant journey but, like opiate withdrawal, you’re better for it on the other side. Play it as loud as you can stand it to soak in the energy, then play it quietly to hear textures and nuances you missed the first time around. Then play it a few more times and discover how it’s a completely different album on each listen. Just make sure you hold on to your sanity. [The Big Takeover]

Zenial -- "Connection Reset By Peer" -- CD -- €10
2012 Zoharum, ZOHAR 027-2
It's Zenial's first album in 6 years, and it shows his creativity in the context of live activity. It does not mean that 'Connection Reset by Peer' is a live album as such. Yes, the source material for the record was recorded live during sonic experiments and creating sound installations over the past few years. The album is not a compilation though-it's a well-weighed entity, thematically and sonically coherent. 'Connection Reset by Peer' is a result of interferences of environment sounds based to a large extent on electricity, radio feedback, electromagnetic field sounds emitted by current generators and elements of the so-called field recordings.
