Above The Ruins -- "Songs Of The Wolf" -- CD -- €20
1984/1996 World Seprent, ATR 1

Aldinucci, Giulio -- "Aer" -- CD -- €10
2014 Dronarivm, DR-25, (ltd. 200)
Invisible and intangible air around us is actually similar to the sea, which always varies. And sound is the voice of air, and the impression of the space where it have been heard. The new album by Giulio Aldinucci called “Aer” focuses on the ability of different sounds to communicate and become music. CD comprises seven ductile atmospheric soundscapes produced from complimentary field recordings and software and analogue hardware generated ambient. And the appearance of each track is comparable to the birth of a new universe. This is the case when “listening”, “feeling” and “breathing” are synonymous. [label info]

Antez + Mathieu Calleja + Miguel A. Garcia + Artur Vidal / Gregory Buttner / Hector Rey -- "Malasana / Kaktus / Myxini" -- 3 CD-R -- €7
2014 Observatoire, obs * RD#4, (ltd. 100)
"Malasana": This recording was made in an area of Madrid called Malasana. The name recalls the Spanish struggle against the French troops of Napoleon, which took place at the beginning of the XIX century and is famously represented in the paintings of Goya. Nowadays, despite the increasing gentrification of the area of Malasana, it remains a place well known for night-time unrest and counter-cultural disobedience. This cultural climate draws parallels with the way improvised music relates to confrontation. Many musicians feel that improvised music clashes against, or is at odds with, social institutions, as in the case of Madrid, where modern or contemporary music is almost completely ignored by popular culture. In this recording we can hear a different kind of confrontation. Musicians seem to be trying to fight, both against themselves and against the temptation of presenting what they already know. They seem to be seeking out strategies for creating music collectively, without falling back on cliche, imitation or cultural habits. The listeners of this recording are invited to consider if the musicians have succeeded in this attempt. They are also encouraged to interrogate their own listening, as both a cultural practice shaped by social environment and as an area for a similar internal contest... "Kaktus": For this track I recorded the needles of a cactus played with my fingers. After some digital processings I edited them into a composition in 5 parts. In parts 3 and 5 the cactus recordings are combined and modulated with sinus-waves... "Myxini": Recorded in Bilbao during the summer of 2012. No overdub. [label info]

Bakker, Anne Chris -- "Reminiscences" -- CD -- €10
2014 Dronarivm, DR-20, (ltd. 200)
“Reminiscences existed with no detailed plan. It is more the result of spontanious playing and recording over a period of 5 months using guitar, pedals and and a violin bow. During playing lots of images came up in mind, quite simular to the half sleep state of mind where images and situations flow and bind in an unstructured way. While playing and listening to the material it opened up a map of lost memories. This is how I recollect. Reminiscences” (Anne Chris Bakker). Anne Chris Bakker is an musician from the Netherlands who creates music somewhere between electro accoustic, experimental, ambient and minimal music. “Reminiscences” is an artist’s first full lenght solo album. Block, Olivia & Kyle Bruckmann -- "Teem" -- CD -- €9
2010 and/OAR, either/4
Olivia Block: field recordings, piano, reed organ, editing and mixing. Kyle Bruckmann: oboe, English Horn, suona, accordion, field recordings, editing and mixing. Bruckmann and Block’s creative relationship dates back to the recording of Block’s 1999 release Pure Gaze, shortly after both artists entered into Chicago’s vibrant experimental music community. Their decision to create a collaborative duo ensued, but remained in the realm of good intentions until shortly before Bruckmann’s relocation to the San Francisco Bay Area. They then began playfully stockpiling sounds from a myriad of sources, collecting field material, and recording duo improvisations in various spaces using hallway intercom systems and unorthodox microphone placements, among other processes and techniques. This initial activity was followed by five years of collaborative editing, processing and mixing, resulting in the emergent expanse that is Teem. [label info]

Dumont, Olivier & Rodolphe Loubatiere -- "Mouture" -- CD-R -- €6
2013 Observatoire, obs * RD#2, (ltd. 100)
This french guitar/percussion pairing produce few surprises, having found a comfortable slot in the post-reductionist, texturally aware corner of modern Improv. But what makes their music consistently interesting is the depth of the duo's palette. For every sound that resembles anything like percussion, even fewer sound anything like a guitar and a fair amount can't be easily attributed to either musician. Individual personalities, egos and characters diminish, and the focus is left on the sound of the music alone. Things scrape, roar, rumble and whine through a slow, finely detailed morass of constantly churning sound (the album's title translates fittingly as Grind). At different points both claustrophobically murky and airily glowing, this is engaging, absorbing music, but it's no easy listen, and patient attention is required befor it gradually seeps out its rewards. Duplant, Bruno -- "Quelques Usines Fantomes" -- CD -- €10
2012 Unfathomless, U13, (ltd. 200)
Field Recording / Musique Concrete / Experimental. "...Duplant forms space and darkness from his building blocks. He positions discrete sounds carefully and never overwhelms the listener with a monstrous industrial roar. This is much more subtle. It isn’t industrial music, it is ghost music. The industry has gone, but the sounds are preserved as memories, phantoms, spirits emanating like vapours from dead factory walls and floors..." [Chris Whitehead]

Five Elements Music -- "Rishikesh" -- CD -- €10
2012 Unfathomless, U11, (ltd. 200)
Field Recording / Experimental. "In this work, I present two acoustic environments. These sounds are born in India. Rishikesh is located in the foothills of the Himalayas of which it is a gateway to. Within this piece are sounds that were recorded near the flowing mountain streams of the Ganges; they have been captured at night time, where small streams of water eventually grind coastal rocks. There is also the echo of prayer wheels, and the noise of the slow Ganges and streams flowing from the mountains… and many more other sounds that were hanging around me." [S]

Homo Durus / Life With An Idiot -- "The All-Russian Census of Hydrogen" -- CD-R -- €5
2014 Frozen Light, FZL 013, (ltd. 30)
Frozen Light presents new mini-album by post-industrial jesters Homo Durus, who experiment on pure forms of improvisation. Their new work called "all-Russian census of hydrogen" was designed as a collaborative effort with piano noiseacoustic project "Life with an Idiot» (pushkinstyle1799.narod.ru/idiot.html). Both projects have retreated from their traditional themes (turtles, cheese and herring) and spread out on a search for the limits of music perception as an art form and the air rending. Grand Total - all sad and funny at the same time. Material is traditionally based on one-day live improvised recordings using electronic equipment, piano and voices. The new album was recorded in one evening, like the previous one, but if the group explored the principles of analog synthesis and ironic allusions to the music at that time, now the principle of sampling and grotesque in electronic and acoustic music are the main objects of experiments. We recommend this work for all who love the humor in experimental music! Physical version was released as packaged in a sealed envelope CDr with full-color A5 cover. 30 copies. [press-release]

Jules, Marsen -- "Sinfonietta" -- CD -- €10
2014 Dronarivm, DR-28, (ltd. 100)
Aristotle referred the term “symphony” to music of the spheres that embraces the concept of a ethereal harmony. Sinfonietta, which lasts 45 minutes, is a very first element of cosmic architectonics, the miniature universe model. Unwrapping in time, this self-contained composition is skillfully woven out of orchestral sound fragments repeated in a cyclical manner. But it would be not enough, just to listen to this music. Marsen Jules offers a new sense of reality beyond the three known dimensions, where time is non-linear and perception is multivariate. [label info]

Kahn, Jason & Asher -- "Vista" -- CD -- €9
2008 and/OAR, and/31
The work on Vista began in the summer of 2006 with recordings made by Asher in the Back Bay neighborhood of Boston. Walking through the alleys and side streets he recorded the various mechanical rooms, generators, ventilation systems and idling motors which were to be found there. These recordings were processed and sent to Kahn. Later that fall, Kahn sent Asher several pre-dawn recordings he had made on the shores of Zurich Lake. Asher processed these in keeping with the methods he had used with his own location recordings so as to create continuity among the amassing material. Unprocessed wind recordings made by Kahn in the Swiss Alps in the summer of 2007 comprised the final batch of material used on Vista. Asher and Kahn spent the remainder of that year working on a final mix. Addressing the idea of hearing and seeing out and beyond spatial planes, title Vista references both the aural expanses of Asher's home on a hill in the town of Somerville and Kahn's trips to the Alps and Zurich Lake. In processing and mixing the discrete details of a landscape, we hear them from a real physical distance. Through the incidental combinations of processed local sounds and sound materials which are entirely foreign to us, an imaginative aural view is created which obscures any relationship to a documentary account of the original locations recorded for Vista. Kassel Jaeger -- "Lignes D'Erre & Randons" -- CD -- €10
2010 Unfathomless, U04, (ltd. 200)
Abstract / Musique Concrete / Field Recording / Experimental. In these times of maximum transparency, Kassel Jaeger‘s musical personality remains remarkably elusive. From an aesthetic angle, he is a field recorder working with a high degree of post-processing. From a performative perspective, he is an improviser working with field recordings. To historians, he is a sound artists in the Musique Concrete tradition. As lignes d’erre & randons proves, all interpretations are as true, to a degree, as they are irrelevant. These recordings of wind and water, Parisian pipelines and German rivers, of insects and algae are always just points of departure, the result by default a composite of fact and temporal distance. Jaeger doesn’t just accept the limitations of faithfully re-assembling the past, he actually considers them a primary source of creativity. Through the lens of transfiguration, everything appears both more beguiling and bewildering : On “vultighjime”, the sounds of ultralight aircraft motor engines on Corsica are assembled into a subtle score of pitched points, bent curves, discrete drones and the occasional aerial chord. “windshore”, similarly, hinges on a duet-like interplay between breaking waves and ghostly breathing sounds. These pieces are clearly carefully constructed, and yet they appear perfectly ‘real’, showing the inner world as a natural extension of physical manifestations. In these times of maximum transparency, Jaeger is always one step ahead of the listener when it comes to his approach, aims and choice of tools, which lends his compositions a slightly unsettling touch. Clearly, mystery remains a precious commodity: Would I like to visit the places Jaeger‘s depicting? I’m not sure, but it’s hard to avert my ears. [Tobias Fischer, Tokafi]

2015 Biosonar^Labyrint 027, (ltd. 52)
This disc presents the result of collaborative drone sessions, practically, a live session on one of the private parties at Zanza Room, in close Sostice eve, on the night December 21-22, 2014, with minimal editing and in one track to keep the mind flow: one long piece about winter sun, winds and flows of rotation, waves and pendulums, seasons and changes. Winter air blends with the aroma of tea ceremonies and spicy smoke. The soundflow is made with the use of analogue modules with hybrid processing and acoustic elements, such as flutes and voice, cassette field recordings and radio interference. Recommended to listen on wideband audio systems as well as in earphones, and if there's a chance to use both at the same time - surely use both simultaneously. Marchetti, Lionel & Yan Jun -- "Shanghai Atelier" -- CD -- €10
2014 Observatoire, obs * experiment | 051, (ltd. 200)
"I think it was in 2009 when i received email from Lionel... Wow, it’s long enough to scheme a coup. Maybe two... Since then we discussed a lot about release his work on Sub Jam label and invite him to China... I wrote this long story into the book The Only Authentic Work which has been published with Lionel’s CD 23 Formes en Elastique as one work in 2013. Then he came to China for a release tour. The day he arrived in Beijing was one of the heavy pollution days. On taxi to my home from airport was like lost in a cyberpunk film. He told me later: Mamma mia! I thought it was apocalyptic! But surely we survived from it and got a lot of bonus. Hot pot, Forbiden City, ink paitings, alcohol, black tea, music and friends, frozen worm and more hot pots. Then the trip to Shanghai and Hangzhou. And more alcohol and friends. And sounds, which are entirely, constantly embracing us and jumping into our recorders... We traveled with Soviet Pop, an electronic music duo based in Beijing. 6 events in 3 cities including Beijing. In two weeks i discovered these cities as a traveller as well. Beijing was dusty, huge and droning. Hangzhou looked rich and tasty. Shanghai was fresh. We call it the capital of magic. I can recall so many pieces of moments of sounds, lights, colours, smells and faces... Yes that’s tour as it always been... Lionel has wrote a lot of poems after this trip. I wrote few. Also we made photos and field recordings. Yes. That made a balance to what we eat (lamb and noodles) and breath (air with smog) from the world. Or maybe not. I’m not really sure what we did to the world. We just spent some time together with helps from people and electricity. The foods were fantastic anyway... Before the last day Lionel stayed in China we recorded this album at an artist friend (Lili Chin)’s residency studio in Shanghai. Both we had speaker cones as instruments so we recorded our sounds from them. Plus recordings from our mixers. That was November 11th, 2013, in one of the most expensive hotels of the world." Monocube -- "Blue Dusk /// Red Dawn" -- CD -- €10
2014 Midira Records, MD017
“Blue Dusk /// Red Dawn” is the new album by ukrainian artist Monocube. You can expect a dense massive voyage through soundlandscapes, made by guitar, field recordings and alienated vocals, moving slightly between ambient and drone. The album is about 39 minutes long, but the tracks give you a feeling of endless moving sounds. The soundscapes are very raw, blurred and distorted at the same time, what makes them sounding warm and catchy even if there is no straight structure. Asking Monocube about the intention of the album, he explains that the idea behind the tracks is based on “private associations, memories, atmospheres, vibes of beloved cities, vibe of the night, twilight and dawn times, feelings, emotions…” [label info]

Namblard, Marc -- "Chants Of Frozen Lakes" -- CD -- €9
2008 Kalerne, kal01
Field recordings of an unusual natural phenomena: the sounds of a frozen lake singing. Marc Namblard, sound artist and naturalist living in the northeast of France, has spent several years listening to and recording an acoustic phenomenon occuring in the winter time. The tiniest crackles inside the ice of frozen lakes produce mechanical vibrations. Under specific atmospheric conditions, these impulses propagate in the ice, whose tension makes it similar to the skin of a drum. The acoustic result is an unbelievable blend of drumming sounds and etheral resonances. This CD retraces the whole phenomena : in 55 minutes, one can discover the different steps of what happened at Lac de Pierre Percee (a lake close to Marc's village) on the 16th of January 2006. It began with the frost falling on the vegetation accompanied by birds in the distance. The first brief percussive sounds announced the ice beginning its work under the first sunrays. A little bit later, the ice started to crackle : sounds became longer and more intense. At the end of the session, ice was breaking everywhere, the lake was singing. The phenomenon vanished with the appearance of a slight breeze... This soundwork gathers some of the most beautiful moments of hours and hours of Marc's recordings into a whole piece, but there was no processing or overdub in the production of this publication : the aim is to propose to the listener an experience of what he would expect in the front of the lake (with the exception of the temperature). Marc's recording technique is based on ORTF stereo configuration using condenser microphones and high-end preamplifiers. “Chants Of Frozen Lakes” can easily be classified in the domains of Naturalism, since it is based on straight observation of natural events, and in the field of Sound Art as it proposes a very intense listening experience. Therefore, this CD should delight listeners of nature sound recording, experimental music as well as electronica. [press-release]

Nekaya Bulkaushaya Sreda -- "From Space Chaos To Cosmic Noise" -- CD -- €9
2012 Provoloka, PRVLK-0003, (ltd. 500)
Analog synth / sci-fi / power electronics. The project appeared during the expansion of the so called "Izhevsk wave". First recordings were made in 1992 (mini-album "Centuria"), and resembled the works of classical electronic composers, but with a touch of retro-futurism. The last album was a one-session recording made in 1997 on a Polyvox synthesizer, lost soon after the recording. However 10 years later the author has wound this work, converted it to digital format and gave it to the label. Now we proudly present this weird agressive synth-based power electronics charged with a spirit of Soviet sci-fi. [label info]

Northam, Michael -- "Le Septieme Deguise En Neuf" -- CD -- €10
2014 Observatoire, obs * mif | 049, (ltd. 200)
An enigmatic new record from Michael Northam tracing a reorientation process of moving from over a decade of nomadic life across Europe (2001-2013) to settling into rural life in the unique bioregion that is Southern Oregon. The tracks are improvisations recorded in distinct locations, each carrying a certain feeling-seed of this movement between September 2012 and September 2013. From resplendent Villa Waldberta in Bavaria to a humble shack along South Pacific Highway in Jackson County, Oregon. Guided by a series of visionary experiences regarding time, space and ever waking-up process of the everyday. These recordings transmit through their vibrations an ever shifting reorientation that everyone must learn to navigate one day or another… [http://orogenetics.org]

Nytt Land (Ylande) -- "s/t" -- CD -- €8
2015 Sulphur Flowers, SF 3
Nytt Land is a side-project of a Siberian folk-rock band Ylande which first self-titled release's front cover still bears traces of its old affiliation. On this album a group of talented ethno-instrumentalists aim to share the magnificence of genuine Northern nature and culture materialized in Wardruna-inspired ritual-oriented folk music. A vast array of ethnic instruments along with a decent skill to match it bring us a solid and enchanting ritual folk release. [label info]

Papapostolou, David -- "Contrastes (Dispositifs D'ecoute; C'est Moi Qui Souligne)" -- CD -- €9
2013 Winds Measure Recordings, wm32, (ltd. 300)
"Dispositifs d'ecoute" refers to the interaction of the pieces with the listener's immediate sound environment, and how that shapes the overall listening experience. "C'est moi qui souligne" is a literary expression used by authors quoting someone else's text and highlighting a particular section: the highlights/italics are mine. This addresses the question of authorship in the context of the listening situation described above: although the listening experience is mediated by a sound environment and pre-existing conditions beyond my control, it is clear that adding those particular sounds to an existing environment is a pre-determined situation set out by myself. Therefore my suggestively is ever present; despite the many layers of chance operations at play in the making of these pieces, and no matter how hard the man who had nothing to say tried to make sure sounds were only sounds. Revenant -- "Zeltini" -- CD -- €10
2011 Unfathomless, U05, (ltd. 250)
Abstract / Field Recording / Experimental. Revenant is an ongoing project with open membership that focuses on site-specific acoustic actions. All sounds originate from materials found in-situ, and from interactions with the space itself. This material was recorded by Maksims Shentelevs, Eamon Sprod, John Grzinich, Kaspars Kalninsh, Felicity Mangan. "There were some “dark” elements surrounding this session. It was mid-November in the Baltics which meant that it was cold, gray and the sun goes down early. By the time we entered the bunker and set up to record there was no natural light left to see. Trying to find a shared experience through improvisation among a group that is not familiar is hard enough, trying to do this in the dark in an unfamiliar place is even harder. Knowing we would be without visual and sometimes auditory communication because of the multiple spaces available I suggested to do a recording experiment, to each use our own equipment yet synchronize the timing at the start. If we were to get “lost” or immersed in our own experiences, it would be interesting to reassemble them later as a shared “fictional” space. This is indeed what we ended up with. Using only my ears and a headlamp to guide my way, I foraged through that unknown space collecting objects and playing them on the varied surfaces I discovered. I remember the old rags, the dust, broken pieces of concrete, pipes coming out of the ground and how I searched for ways to animate the space and instigate interactions with the others. Whether it was the quest for new objects or the need to stay warm I constantly moved around and even ended up outside toward the end." (John Grzinich)

Seattle Phonographers Union -- "s/t" -- CD -- €9
2009 and/OAR / Mimeomeme, and/mim1
"The Seattle Phonographers Union convene to explore the ways in which we recognize, differentiate, map, and navigate our sonic environment. Our intent is to move beyond habitual experience of sound and uncover what is foreign in the familiar and familiar about the foreign; to explore what we hear and relearn what we know. Some sounds will be familiar, others less so. Both novel and familiar sounds will be juxtaposed in ways unique to each event. Our intent is to investigate and enrich both our intuitive and analytical relationship with sound. The goal is not to excite, confuse or entertain per se, but to attend to the world, which is much more detailed and diverse than any one person's perception of it." (from program notes written by Yitzchak Dumiel for the very first SPU performance in 2002)... As has always been the case with this particular Phonographers Union group (there are several in located in other cities in the US and UK), no processing is used during the performances, so what you hear are straght-up field recordings mixed within live improvised settings. This release encapsulates some of the finest performances over the span of four years from 2004 to 2008. Longtime followers of and/OAR's catalog and history (e.g. the compilations produced for Phonography.org) will be familiar with names of most of the members of SPU featured throughout this release: Steve Barsotti, Peter Comley, Christopher DeLaurenti, Katie Gately, Mark Griswold, Doug Haire, Susie Kozawa (also of Aono Jikken Ensemble), Dale Lloyd, Perri Lynch, Robert Millis (also of Climax Golden Twins), Toby Paddock, Heather Perkins, Steve Peters, Jonathan Way. T-Wald -- "Landeinwarts: In Memory Of Hermann Hesse" -- CD -- €10
2014 Ufa Muzak, UFA 66 / Valgriind, VG 56, (ltd. 300)
Symphonic ambient / Neoclassic. The album dedicated to Hermann Hesse opens like his book, from the very first lines inviting to the inmost fabulous world of his impetuous imagination, intellectual fiction tightly related to the moments of his own life. Hesse set himself against the society and was running from it into his dreams, in journeys, in complete dissolution in nature which was the confirmation of the existence of God. He couldn't imagine life without creativity, having truly healing force, being able to bring up a personality, giving answers to the essence of things. Hesse wrote about that in his last philosophical surrealistic novel "The Glass Bead Game", in which an order of intellectuals invents the universal art influenced by Buddhism and mathematics in addition to music. Like in the aesthetics of Romanticism, kept up by the German classic, the idea of progress and civilization is opposed by returning of a human to the roots of nature, so in the music of T-WALD one can hear quiet whisperings of wildlife spirits, always having a powerful impact on the ability to create. The album touches the key points of the writer's world of imagery. Deliberately quiet recording prepares the listener for the attentive contemplative mood, in which he would open again and again the faery grottos inviting to take a rest in each of them, being imbued by the magic. Light weightless melody, like a breath of wind from Bodensee, carries long faded smells, voices, rustling of leaves and splashes of water from the past. There is no return, the only thing left is the book read long ago and buried in a pile of dry leaves, and the eternal music in a long abandoned empty house. "Oh, was not all suffering time, were not all forms of tormenting oneself and being afraid time, was not everything hard, everything hostile in the world gone and overcome as soon as one had overcome time, as soon as time would have been put out of existence by one's thoughts?"... 9 tracks, 45 minutes, 6 panel cardboard sleeve. Turra, Luigi -- "Ki" -- 3 CD -- €15
2011 and/OAR, and/37
A first version of "Enso" was originally released by Small Voices in 2007, but the release suffered from peak-volume distortion due to being mastered too loud, plus the use of compression altered the sound of the work. Here, it is free from distortion and compression. "Ancient Silence" was originally self-released as a limited edition CDR EP in 2007. Presented here for the first time is the full length version. "Shasekishu" is a previously unreleased third part of the "KI" trilogy. "Ki" traverses and transcends dimensions of time and space, so all notions of past, present and future defy linear logic. Ephemeral occurrences turn into frozen memories suspended in the air like clouds of dust in sunlight. An epic and outstanding example of reductionist sound cinema. A truly visionary work. Turra, Luigi & Christopher McFall -- "Tactile.Surface" -- CD -- €10
2010 Unfathomless, U02, (ltd. 250)
Abstract / Field Recording / Experimental. "Tactile.Surface" is the sound presentation of a virtual place, an imaginary environment born from the alchemy of recordings between two different but real places, far apart geographically, yet close in time and spirit. On one side, are the sounds captured in the intimacy of my living room in the small city of Schio (North of Italy), mainly those reflecting its silence, and also some caught from the windows in the early hours of morning, enhanced with some discreet short recordings of shakuhachi flutes. On the other side, lies the open space of Kansas City urban context, and the sound/views absorbed during a long travel to Colorado by Christopher McFall. The two different sound places have been blended into a new one, rich of memory and keeping intact the physical perception of the surfaces, and their tactile, material aspects. (Luigi Turra)

Whetham, Simon -- "Mall Muzak" -- CD -- €10
2011 Unfathomless, U07, (ltd. 200)
Field Recording / Experimental. In 2009, as part of the ‘All Around You’ season of sonic events at The Cube, Simon Whetham was invited to produce a site-specific work for a half-derelict shopping centre called ‘The Mall’ in Bristol. He explored the space with various microphones and techniques to uncover sounds not normally heard by the shopping public. Memories of childhood visits portrayed the shopping centre as a crammed and noisy place, every shop a brightly lit shrine, drawing in it’s worshippers… On returning to The Mall, it was apparent that the current recession had hit hard, with almost half the units with their shutters down, possibly never to open again. The seemingly empty drones of the various processes that keep a structure like this alive could be heard over the scattering of shoppers. Behind the scenes, the drones become more musical and tonal, singing a lament to the financial situation and to better times. The chattering of air conditioning and escalators echoing that of now absent consumers. Ltd x 200 hand-numbered copies in a PVC archive sleeve with insert. [Cold Spring]

In the last days of the passing year, we're glad to present the new release by our label - "Noir" from the Russian project Faded Flowers, released on cassetted in an edition of 50 copies. We should note that the tape sound differs from digital towards darkness and lo-fi-ness. Somewhere between Tropic of Cancer and Lycia, instrumental cold & gloomy sound of this project seems to be born to be played back from the tape: melancholic guitars, vague synths and cold drum machine will plunge you into a bottomless ocean of analogue melancholia. Sides A and B are marked by the Sun and the Moon respectively. [label info]

Pustota -- "Refrain" -- 2 MC -- €8
2015 YAOP, YAOP 068, (ltd. 21)
Refrain (from the old French refrain (from refraindre) - "repeat") - the main theme in music, a certain musical material being repeated many times during the musical composition. In poetry refrain can be a line or several lines inserted between verses. The presence of refrain defines the compositional form. The most common form of refrain is rondo. Other forms include villanelle and virelai. First appearance of refrain is mentioned among trouveres, e.g. Gas Brule, in the XIII century there's a rise of all forms of songs with the refrain, which lasted until the XV century. To a large extent it can be considered as a beloved method of the poets living in a region between Loire and Rhine, writing both in Latin and vernacular languages. Troubadours in contrast have rarely used it. On this 150-min long cassette work the refrain has long amplitude and each side of a cassette can be interpreted as a poetic line, and the whole cycle - as a quatrain with a random sequence of all four sides, which makes it an instrument for creating variations. Variative concept has been used during the recording of this work in a sequence of the devices for fixating and re-recording of the cassette tape noises - it's different on each side, with only four magnetic recording devices used in the whole cycle. A project by Evgeniy Savenko (Sadogipnoz, Lunar Abyss, Boeviye Cikady). Handmade cardboard box painted by hand. [press-release]

Allerseelen -- "Rauhe Schale" -- CD -- €9
2010 Aorta, AORCD13
"Rauhe Schale" ('Rough Shell') is the brand new album from Austrian legends Allerseelen, which fascinates musically as well as visually. Everything moves and flows in a field of force between industrial, metal, folklore and pop. Lovers of bands like Nine Inch Nails, Einstürzende Neubauten, Laibach or Underworld could also fall in love with Allerseelen. Gerhard Hallstatt sometimes describes his music as Electronic Folklore or Apocalyptic Rock. But basically there is no real description for Allerseelen - all attempts to find an expression for their music may be valid for some time, yet lose their meaning after a couple of months or years. The songs were inspired by various magical mystery tours in Austria, Bulgaria, Croatia, Greece, Italy and Slovenia. Gerhard is assisted here by Dimo Dimov (Svarrogh, Miel Noir, Sturmpercht), Marcel P. (Sagittarius, Miel Noir, Halgadom), Meri Tadic (Eluveitie) and Annabel Lee (Blood Axis). 70 mins. of music in a digipak with booklet. [Cold Spring]

Two years after the highly acclaimed „Sperrstelle Nordost“ album the mighty ATOMTRAKT are back with a new bombastic, martial, heroic and apocalyptic Industrial release which is entitled „Artefakte des Verderbens“. As on “Sperrstelle Nordost”, cold, heroic and atmospheric synthesizer layers are mixed with bombastic drums and military war-like rhythm patterns. The vocals on the new record vary from dark and clean to distorted and threatening. The overall sound of the album is powerful and bombastic – it spreads a superior and mighty atmosphere rarely heard before. The lyrics deal with fears, death, decay and ambiguity. When listening to this sophisticated album, you can find yourself on the battlefield in Stalingrad. The album itself never gets boring - This is due to the variety of songs and themes. The album is available in a 6-panel DIGIPAK and it was recorded and mastered at Luftschutzkerker Studio in Switzerland. [press-release]

Aube -- "Le Syndrome Aquatique" -- 2 CD -- €12
2008 Silentes, sme 0721
This is the long awaited reissue of one of the best Aube's work originally titled AQUA SYNDROME, published about 10 years ago by MANIFOLD records. The new reissue included the original album with a bonus track and a bonus live CD. LE SYNDROME AQUATIQUE is an impressive job of deconstruction and resetting of sonorous material to work of Aube, this particularly extended in the duration, treaty and expanded time, much to be proposed in a rich edition in double CD. Through sophisticated and very tested technical of sonorous rework assembled in years of untiring activity in a searching experience, Aube puts molding on and models fragments of concrete sounds of "aquatic" derivation transforming them in unknown drones, noises, pads, loops rhythms-mechanics, constructing a fantastic sonorous tapestry of valuable invoice and incredible impact, and unavoidably bringing back to the memory the first three CD constructed with single water sounds of the monumental one box of 12 CDs proudly published from Amplexus more than 10 years ago. One new unforgettable work for all those who love, and has loved, the avant-guard-istic sonorous experimentations of large the great Japanese master. [press-release]

Band Of Pain -- "Sacred Flesh (Original Movie Soundtrack)" -- CD -- €9
2000/2010 Cold Spring, CSR33CD, (ltd. 666)
On Friday 14th April 2000, the film SACRED FLESH finally premiered at the ABC Piccadilly cinema for a two week stint, before being shown at cinemas across the country. It was delayed for a while as the BBFC decided on whether to grant a certificate for screening, or to ban it altogether! Finally, with a few edits they gave it an 18 certificate. The soundtrack was written by BAND OF PAIN, creating a very dark, brooding atmosphere to compliment Nigel Wingroves' film. Originally with a 16-page booklet depicting explicit scenes from the film (generallt cute lesbian conventuals), pressure from the distributors forced the artwork into a revised 4-page version. SACRED FLESH is dark journey into realms of mental anguish and repression; a very Black Ambient soundtrack. At last, BAND OF PAIN is working in the medium to which its most suited. An incredible new album with massive demand from both film and music distributors alike. 10 year anniversary edition of 666 copies! [label info]

Barbarossa Umtrunk -- "Wehrwolf Dharma" -- CD -- €10
2010 Ufa Muzak, UFA 33, (ltd. 500)
Military pop / Esoteric industrial. UFA presents a grandiose album by the French sound battalion BARBAROSSA UMTRUNK. This masterpiece is hard to file under a certain style, as they are so interwoven in music and can't be clearly defined. Ethnic elements, cimbals, shamanic singing, heavy drones, synth lines and lots of vocals blend together into an insane mix of apocalyptic, ritual and orchestral neoclassics. The album's concept is no less complex and sophisticated, it was inspired by the theories of Hans Horbiger and northern dark shamans cults. Spinning around the magic of seids and werewolf mysteries, the hidden plot of the songs tells us about the attempt to rewrite the history of Hyperborean race from the very beginning, from the fall of Thule legend. The ice-cold atmosphere of this album penetrates into the fundamental principle of a mystery, and the werewolf spirit sleeping in collective unconscious wakes up. BU ised in their work texts by J. Parvulescu, R. Howard, A. Rosenberg, M. Marmin (creator of "Greece" new right-wing group in France). The album contains tribute songs to Runes Order and Celtic Frost... Cold merciless ambience of a forest where secret is buried in soil itself, dark paths that protect and wreck, gibbous Moon singing silent songs... in darkness it starts the dreadful game of death, and the sound of broken bones and the wild howl of wolves become a new catastrophic believe. 10 tracks, 72 minutes, sturdy 4-panel sleeve with an insert. [press-release] Third pressing with different artwork.

Bianchi, Maurizio (M.B.) -- "The Testamentary Corridor" -- CD -- €8
2006 Silentes Minimal Editions, sme 0608
Alternating between lighter atmosphere and darker isolationistic moments, Bianchi penetrates deep into the most subtle essence of sound, re-arranging it's elemental particles/grains and creating unbelievable sonic-washes. M.B. says: "Insubordinate discord in five tempos for monolithic keyboards and multicellular dissonances, perpetrated during the autumn of 2005. Dedicated to the lamented martyrs. To commemorate a testamentary event the human beings expend time and care, all theirs energies, but sometimes the results are disappointings... Due to the unconvenient heritage of our rhetorical history lost in the corridor of time." [label info]

D'incise -- "Prairie" -- 2 CD-R -- €8
2012 Observatoire, obs * e|myth 038, (ltd. 100)
Swiss-based Peter Laurent (d'incise) offers four lengthy works on this double-disc set, centered around drones and the audible elevation of small sounds. These range from vibrating drum skins to the amplification of "quiet parts" from past concerts (an idea I rather like). This latter is my favorite piece here, yielding a varied range of not-overtly-related sounds and textures that possess a very full feeling, elements jostling around in space, buffeting each other, sliding past one another, chaotic but of a whole. In the notes to the release, he writes, "When it gets boring it becomes interesting" and d'incise abuts that subjective divide now and then. All the tracks are listenable though at times, my attention wandered, which is perhaps fine. I'm guessing that they'd function quite well as traditional (that is, Eno-oriented) ambient music in the sense of subtly causing one to think differently. Hard to say. Listening to the final piece, assembled from "feedbacks, open piano, magnetic glitches, pre-amps, laptop and house noises", one realizes that there's a hell of a lot occurring beneath the apparently simple hum though attempting to focus on it, like looking directly at a faint star in the night sky, often causes the cohesion to disappear. Very interesting work, especially the second disc. Worth checking out for those inclined in this direction. [Brian Olewnick]

Dead Man's Hill -- "Spirits" -- CD -- €9
2010 Steinklang Industries, SK 53
Over the last 7 years, DEAD MAN'S HILL became a well known and much appreciated artist in Ritual Ambient, Neoclassic and Bombastic Martial Music and with this new album, the band drags the listener into alternate realities and far away spheres. The lyrics are mainly dealing with travelling in these worlds. Musically the album goes further in the vein of Lakes of Sacrifice (2006) but a lot deeper-going and much more worked out, so you can say that "Spirits" is definitely the band's best album up to date. Dark and deep-dronning Ambient, mixed with strong and powerful Martial songs, varied with hypnotically mesmerizing Tribal parts. All in all the whole Album has a strong Death Industrial touch and even carries some Gregorian elements. Listen to this album, and let yourself take away to a intangible world, to far away shperes where things are just different to all You ever expected. "Spirits" includes a video from the track Road to Sweet Waters, made by Alex Hugin Wieser. 8 songs / 65 min. [press-release]

Deadwood -- "Ramblack" -- CD -- €9
2008 Cold Spring Records, CSR104CD
“Ramblack" is the follow up to Deadwood's successful 2005 album "8 19" (CSR53CD). Over the past 3 years this Swedish artist has been toiling away, creating a new black ambient / death noise masterpiece and "Ramblack" is the result. Cloaked in a more raw and morbid sound then its predecessor, this album truly changes ones perspective of audial darkness. This analogue beast of an album layers the tonal prayers of demons and the distorted cries of angels, sickness and depravity. True Death Electronics. The soundtrack to your end. "Ramblack" features guest vocals from Norwegian Black Metal legend Maniac (Skitliv, ex-Mayhem), who’s vocal approach on the song 'Forakt' shows the full range of his capacity. Truly one of the most sick and twisted pieces of sonic art ever recorded. Enjoy the disease! [press-release]

Dmitriy Rodionov Experience -- "Seventeen Moments Of Winter" -- CD-R -- €5
2010 Heart-Shaped Box, HSB-043, (ltd. 41)
"The work over this album took about 6 months of winter and spring 2003, mostly in Scherbakovka village in Sverdlovsk region. "Seventeen Moments Of Winter" is filled with the sense of frosty Ural winter, loneliness and warmth of village life. The main line of the album is the composition "New Year's experiments" split in 4 parts. In general, all compositions are like "dreams" seen in frosty winter nights in a Ural village. All these "dreams" are divided in several periods of waking up, marked as "Origin through". One of the tracks - "Influence of the moon" - was inspired by an exhibition of Marina Kutyavina (http://www.mariku.ru). The exhibition was called "Angels and Moons". The track "Gagarin" tells about the first space flight of the Soviet cosmonaut Y.A. Gagarin. "What has felt the man who was the first in the history of Earth to fly in space? Must be something on the edge of insanity. Total detachment from reality". "Seventeen Moments Of Winter" is a conceptual work in which the author refers to his childhood memories. "Music has the ability to take you through the time... Just like, for instance, a smell which you liked in childhood can recreate the image from your childhood, if you close your eyes". [from the author]

Fire In The Head -- "As The Nest Burns" -- CD -- €9
2005 Autarkeia, acd 009, (ltd. 400)
Fire In The Head is probably one of the garish artists of noise/power electronics, representing the famous school of the USA. The project's author Michael Page previously participated at live performances of the legendary Giovanni Balistrer's project SLOGUN, also closely linked to the livery of NY sound terrorists. As The Nest Burns is short, but highly hysterical, brutal and dark album of noise/power electronics stylistics. Michael Page masterly plays with amplitude of different tracks intension. Slackened, leaden, psychedelic sounds overgrow into the avalanche of terribly aggressive and hysterical noise, gradually flooding back as unusual and uncomfortable sound stream. As The Nest Burns is a sort of element of otherworld civilization, starting its sudden extension, transformation and smashing attack. There are many fragments of distorted vocal in this album, making the tracks especially threatful. This is a completely new, reformed attack of USA power electronics tradition against the normal and moral world. Do you know what happens as the nest burns??? Then the children burn!!! Lopez, Francisco -- "Lopez Island" -- CD -- €9
2007 Elevator Bath, eeaoa011, (ltd. 500)
Elevator Bath is immensely proud to present this exquisite new work from one of the major figures of contemporary experimental music. Lopez Island was crafted from original environmental sound matter recorded in Lopez Island during the winter of 1999-2000. The resulting composition is 51 minutes of both delicate minutiae as well as startling power - crackling, howling, and haunting. The small island in Washington state provided the beautiful, isolated terrain for Lopez' gathering of raw sounds and, as a personal audio document (though clearly beyond mere documentary), the landscape has been expertly translated. A quintessentially chilling interpretation of the winter beach, Lopez Island is a worthy addition to Lopez' exemplary body of absolute concrete music and, indeed, one of his finest works to date. Packaged inside two elegant printed sleeves of 100% recycled paper, this compact disc has been issued in an edition of 500 copies. [press-release]

1996/2009 Provoloka, PRVLK 0002, (ltd. 375)

They started their collective experiments in 1994, having recorded and released almost twenty albums, part of them was released by Ultra and Black Dead Rabbit Productions, another part by their own label Plodovitaya Suka. "Sovmehkastratsiya" was released on a cassette in far 1996 by Ultra as a limited edition of 30 copies. After almost 15 years this album is now available on digital media with an additional bonus-track taken from "Zvukoterror" compilation (Ultra 14, 1996). Sheffield, Colin Andrew -- "First Thus" -- CD -- €9
2005 Elevator Bath, eeaoa020, (ltd. 330)
"First thus" is a phrase used by book sellers, publishers, collectors, etc. to describe a book which may be considered a first edition and/or first printing, but which has been available previously in a slightly different form. A true first edition is the original, first printing of a given book, while a first thus is the first printing of a new version of that book. This classification can come about for any number of reasons, though often times it has to do with a new translation of a particular work, the involvement of a new (different) publisher, or with a new forward or introduction.... First Thus is Sheffield's debut solo album. The recordings on this disc were entirely composed using other commercially available recordings. The goal was to distill the essential qualities of these works and then utilize that essence for new recordings. Only very brief sections of the original works were selected. These raw components were then contracted, expanded, layered, and/or otherwise processed until something new was forged. The result is gorgeous ambient music that gradually shifts and unfolds, offering subtle nuance and quiet restraint. In a sense, it is a collection of other people's work, but this music appears here for the first time in a new setting or, if you will, a new translation. Packaged inside two elegant printed sleeves of 100% recycled paper, this compact disc has been issued in an edition of 330 copies. [press-release]

Survival Unit -- "Fentanyl Martyrs" -- 2 CD -- €15
2007 Autarkeia, acd 020
Survival Unit Fentanyl Martyrs 2-golden-CD box is the latest cultural terror attack coming from cultic non-compromising Swedish postmortem/power electronics project. This time an especially dreadful and relevant theme has been chosen for compromising the declared illusions of human civilisation. Both discs have been dedicated to Chechnya undergoing the total genocide, the total war where neither honour nor rules are acknowledged, except perhaps those of Marquis de Sade, who - bearing in mind the facts of this war - would have never imagined how far the fantasy of brutal people can advance in order to dominate, torture and control those resembling themselves [...] This time the album of the conceptual project Survival Unit - unlike the earlier albums contained in intentionally cheap, anarchistic DIJ aesthetics and packages - will be a posh release. A special 3-part digipack, 20-page booklet, 2 golden CDs and a special manually-made box will spit into the face of those mocking underground and the truth. Total dirt, horror, bloody audiovisual collages, non-compromising mockery of illusions: the TRUTH will be packed in special luxury. On the one hand, it is a real pity because this is the grand pre-funeral wake of the Survival Unit project. Yet, the legendary project leaving to Valhalla must be specially honoured. So, no wonder that the independent AUTARKEIA, which has previously buried Megaptera giant very solemnly, has been chosen for arranging the funeral. [label info]

Survival Unit -- "Thought-Trigger-Target" -- CD -- €10
2001/2009 Autarkeia, acd 040
Here is one more masterpiece of Swedish cultural terrorism supplemented with new material and re-released in the golden collection of cultural terrorism series. If compared with the most aggressive albums of Kristian Olsson’s gang Survival Unit, this one is perhaps more atmospheric than openly destructive. Yet, like all other Survival Unit’s diversions, it is pervaded by the black social despair, hate towards human civilisation and the lies it spreads about the reality. It also conveys the position of a person developed in the violent world, i.e. violence against violence for violence. Resistance to everything and anything. Life and its meaning in a nihilistic fight against the surrounding fake reality. This album is a gloomy insight into the future that awaits us all and a fine lesson showing us what stands at the end of the Scandinavian idyll. The album is released in a very elegant digipack with an embossed cover. [press-release]

Svartsinn -- "Traces Of Nothingness" -- CD -- €14
Cyclic Law, 13th Cycle
The 3rd offering from Norway's Svartsinn could be acknowledged as the end of a trilogy, the first opus "Devouring Consciousness" was an album containing stories made during what the artist explains as being some difficult and rough times. The second offering, "Of Darkness And Re-Creation", was the process of trying to deal with these struggles and reflect on them. "Traces Of Nothingness" is simply the reaction, result and the path ahead in this ongoing, seemingly endless darkness. A slightly more melodic, sad and obscure side of Svartsinn that still keeps the cold and dark atmosphere that defines his sound. [press release]

There is a Swedish guitarist David Stackenas, he had an album with Mats Gustafsson in mid-00s entitled "Blues". Of course, there was no blues at all, it was 100% Scandinavian improv originating from English improv, as you know. What am I about? I'm about first several munutes of melancholic fingerpicking of two acoustic guitars of the Italian duo Zero Centigrade which reminded me of that CD and particularly manner of Stackenas. A kind of sloed down improv, which is not blues at all but you want to call it blues. However the Italians are not done yet, as they also use feedback appearing in guitars. And again, that Swedish guitarist have actively used an e-bow and its sounds are quite close to natural feedbacks, so here I remembered his solo works. Well, enough of similarities, let's better talk about differences and peculiarities. What immediately strikes an eye (ears) is the absolutely anti-Italian mood with absence of sun in the music and low sound. It's weird, because they live in Naples, and it is an extremely bright, southern, bustling and noisy city. Perhaps for this reason the duo is so gloomy, if not misanthropic. Maybe they're not glad with the Mediterranean weather when going out to the streets and prefer the twilight of their own studio. The album features only one track lasting for 26 minutes. In the beginning and in the end they play without electronics and this reminded me of "blues". The rest of the track is dedicated to feedbacks and gentle work with them adding and fading out breaking overtones and some sonic defects. The overall mood is extremely relaxed and concentrated at the same time, and if the first quality is pretty obvious, the second appears only with understanding of what and how Zero Centigrade play. Melancholic mood of the music helps thoughts running leisurely in the evening after daytime worries. One can relax and just follow, or attentively listen to every sound appearing - choose what's best for you. [Ilia Belorukov, SM]
