The previous newsletter was out just some days ago, but what can we do if there's already a lot of material for the new one?! Among the arrivals are a couple of new releases from each of Russian labels Aquarellist and Ewers Tonkunst, discs from the Austrian conglomerate Steinklang, including also such labels as Ahnstern, Percht, Vrihaspati Recordings, etc., and lots of noise releases from various corners of the international underground scene.

Cremations is a collection of early demo/live/and unreleased tracks from Cold Cave. From the projects isolated beginnings to the recent full band line-up the development of this singular musical entity is documented here in its icy electronic glory. From Cold Cave’s infancy sexual identity and oblique existentialism have been expressed through biting lyrics and electronic minimalism. Rarely has the human condition been exposed so brazenly as in “Sex Ads”. Melodies, noise and rhythms clash as stories from below the surface are retold. From the demo LP Coma Potion, which featured a rugged stripped down distortion, to the suggestive Electronic Dreams tour cassette (featuring the voice of Max Morton on the track “Heavenly Metals”). Cold Cave has developed its own brand of genre defying electronic music, without ever betraying its dark roots. Love and pornography, Industrial music and traditionalism, poetry and profanity all mix together in a hedonistic, cocktail of nihilistic nights and mournful mornings. A young Italian project with a two-track 24-min mini-album. Track "A" - pleasantly textured monotonous industrial humming with echoes of speech samples transforms into constantly mutating noise filled with electronic clanks. Track "B" - rhythmic lashes with a flow of pulsating hisses - right atmosphere of well-coordinated working mechanisms, slowly altering throughout 14 minutes. Industrial and noisy, but not really harsh, rather stylish and smart. Sleeve made of silver paper.

Split of two young Italian projects. Three tracks from Panda - incredibly raw and harsh loops of sound with ragged edges. One long track from Combustione e Liberazione - cycled loop gradually becomes overgrown by rough sounds, taking all the space, through which again rises the mechanical rhytms in company with dense flow of digital noise. Crumer, Jason -- "Hum Of An Imagined Environment" -- CD -- €10

Alongside Waylon Riffs and Ryan Wolfe, Jason Crumer cranks out Southern metal for Relapse Records trio Facedowninshit and is also a member of Now in Darkness World Stops Turning, Aluminum Noise, and Amazing Grace. With his rather prolific solo work, however, Crumer focuses on creating hemorrhaging, elongated feedback sequences that sound like Earth rotating around SunnO))). Hum of an Imagined Environment, his most well-rounded effort to date, is notable for its title track and opener, “Even Bottom Feeders Have Parasites,” both pushing past the eight-minute mark with free-flowing movements that keep the listener engaged at all times. While extremely harsh on the ears (imagine the aural equivalent of the Butthole Surfers' album cover for Electriclarryland), Crumer’s noise is well worth the pain. Since resuming recording this past Autumn, F/I/T/H’s work has taken a new direction. "Carrion Wind" is an ambitious work which consolidates the sounds explored with F/I/T/H and Sky Burial into a single project, focusing them into a complex and meticulously composed 63 minute industrial opus, a dark and ominous dirge, both beautiful and brutal, incorporating aspects of metal percussion, dark ambient, drone, doom and industrial electronics. Noticeably absent are Page’s vocals as F/I/T/H takes a more "restrained" approach favoring slow layering of synths, field recordings, guitar loops and electronics to build a tension which occasionally peaks at an explosive level comparable to the shorter tracks of F/I/T/H’s previous releases. Here is the debut album from what is being described as the new phase for EMIT. HAMMEMIT is the new recording moniker for infamous UK black-noise/ambient figure U.I./Malachi, with additional members. Going back to far away times, HREFNESHOLT digs out long forgotten, ancient tales amongst the myths of the Upper Austrian forests. These legends of sinister and primal fears were too terrible to be retold and people wanted to forget them over the centuries. Now these ancient tales are finally being retold in "Urangst", the newly released debut album of HREFNESHOLT. „Uraungst“ is a mixture of dark, organic Ambient, Folk, a slight Black Metal touch and spoken/sung lyrics and tales in Austrian dialect. IRIJ is a one-woman-folk project brought to life by Eluveitie violinist Meri Tadic in autumn 2006. Her compositions range from mere instrumentals all the way to a cappella songs. It's a journey through a Slavic soul devoted to tradition and sincerity. IRIJ is mentioned in Slavic mythology with almost oppositional meanings. Its the celestial residence of pagan gods as well as the here and now and the materialistic world. Her music sounds bewitching and bright, but dark and plain at the same time. The debut album of Kraschau was inspired by the great empires and kingdoms of Europe, like the Austro-Hungarian Empire and Prussia and also 20th century christian and legitimist movements, eg. the Falange or the Carlists of the spanish civil war or Romania’s Legionary Movement. The album features various guest musicians from the hungarian industrial and neofolk scene... Kraschau was built upon the ruins of Adam Berces’ prevous martial-neofolk project, Durch Heer und Kraft. Adam was trained as a classical musician on trumpet and trombone, that’s why brass instruments has a big role in Kraschau’s music. Laharis is the new project of Johan König who was the original founder of A Challenge of Honour. After recording the "Wilhelm Gustloff" sessions, Johan left ACOH and gave the Project to Peter, who is ACOH nowadays. In 2005 Johan started working on his own music again under a name that he used already several years ago: Laharis. On the new album "Unpolitical Alchemy" he works again (for the first time in 5 years) together with Peter. The sound is between the early ACOH recordings with modern electronic influences. Lovely Little Girls -- "Glamorous Piles & Puffy Saddlebags" -- CD -- €10

To look at one of Gregory Jacobsen's paintings is to view a world of oozing fluid, hilarious meat, and demented animals. Set that vision to music and you get Lovely Little Girls, the band Jacobsen fronts. LLG walks a path of which the foundation is dada, psychedelics, and Beefheart, one that has been trod by Butthole Surfers, Tragic Mulatto, and Idiot Flesh. Swirling sickness of songs are propelled by Eleanor Balson, a drummer whose style creates more than a beat while maintaining a beat. There is an insight that female drummers seem to have (think Katherina Ex or Mary Duchess of Saigon) that leads them to a place where the drum steps outside of 1-2-3-4 but not into Mathland. Also a standout is Alex Perkolup, who plays a guitar that razors noise into piercing fragments, a crack horn section, and Gregory J., singing lines like "Pork chop sloshed tight in the pants/bottom smack chest chop soft port pants" in a style that could be called Jack Brewer directed by Roger Corman. At twenty-minutes Glamorous Piles... is as exactly as long as it should be. Those who can slither into this filth and feel at home will be very much rewarded. [SS, Z-Gun.com]

Partly based upon Nordvargr's previous attempts to alter sleep patterns, this recording also contains theta/delta waves, but the reason for this is not revealed. It has been a little over thirty years since the inception and all-too-brief life span of Phase II, the progressive-folk band founded by Mark Andrews (Blue Grass) and Nicholas Tesluk (Changes). Since that time, only the five selections on their self-titled, blue vinyl, extended-play record (and a handful of songs featured in recent anthology appearances) have found an audience outside of the venues where the group performed live during their original three-year tenure. That is about to change! As the piece de resistance of Phase II's artistic career to date, the band's new album Afterglow has arrived, introducing modern listeners to their unique and timeless mixture of varied musical stylings. Included in this expansive release are six songs from their original repertoire - in some cases, songs only rehearsed, but never before performed in any venue - all recorded here for the very first time. As a special reprise, all of the songs from the blue vinyl record (now long out-of-print) have been enhanced and included on the Afterglow album. And to bring things full-circle, Phase II is also proud to present a recording of its first all-new song of the twenty-first century on this compact disc. To round out an already-generous Phase II presentation, the album concludes with "Candle in the Night", their complete pre-progressive, conceptual radio program from 1978 (two songs of which were included on 2004's Tonwerk Flammenzauber 2 CD). The Afterglow package includes an attractive booklet featuring full lyrics, as well as an anecdotal history of the band in text and photos. Whether during their "folk duo" period, or as a full progressive band, the original warmth of the music of Phase II was felt all-too-briefly and by all-too-few. Psychopathic Terror -- "Revolt" -- CD -- €10

It all started under the moniker of Sigillum Diaboli and finally ended up as Psychopathic Terror. This band from Finland can already look back on a consistent discography (mainly released under their previous name), but I can’t remember to have heard them before.
The band is clearly inspired by metal music and crossover. The first songs are very aggressive. “Conspiracy” reminds me a bit of Ministry, but Psychopathic Terror (as the name might indicate) sounds faster and harder. The song ends in a pure guitar apotheosis. They now and then take a little break (cf. “Limbo” and “The Invisible War”), but the main songs move back into pure terror. The track “21st Century Execution” is one heavier outburst and another demonstration of this band’s power. A few electronic passages are sometimes emerging from the depths, injecting a calmer touch to this metal-minded brutality. “Revolt” is mainly meant to please guitar lovers and metal fans. Sshe Retina Stimulants is one of those names I see around, maybe lend an occassional ear to, but never really dived into. Apperentely they use here environmental sounds ("gathering acoustic signature from central railway stations" it is called on the cover), which are then sampled into a short loops. These loops are played all over the frequency spectrum and is heavily loaded with sound effects. This results in a more harsher form of industrial music, without leaping into industrial boredom. Peter learned to play several acoustic instruments in the last years and some guest musicians also helped to create the band's new style. In their musical work, Geid and Dega build the atmosphere reminding of a horrible nightmare where the future can be glimpsed only in eerie fragments of the past. Dissecting Table is one of the most influential Noise artists from the early Japanese Industrial years. The first Dissecting Table recordings are quite unique in the Japanese Industrial scene, as the band was working with very concrete rhythms and screaming voices and they even had dark and slow songs, which was completely untypical for this time and region. The only comparisons to early Dissecting Table recordings might be the legendary albums of GRIM and WHITE HOSPITAL. Over a year in the making this is the first collaboration between Pain Jerk (Kohei Gomi) and Rock’n’Roll Jackie (Jackie Stewart of Smegma, Tenses, Los Angeles Free Music Society, etc). The source sounds were provided by Jackie and then Kohei obsessively worked these into the 2 long tracks you hear on this disc. This is by no means a conventional harsh noise record. The influence of the musique concrete masters of old echoes heavily throughout these tracks whilst still maintaining the playfulness and non-purism found throughout LAFMS recordings. Old sound effect record samples, TV recordings, Flower Travellin Bands guitar riffs and J-Pop drum beats are all included in the mix alongside Kohei’s synth sounds. Have you ever wondered what a record would sound like that totally filled every bar on your graphic equalizer? Well you don't have to wonder for long because the combined noise terror of Pain Jerk (aka Japanese feller Kohei Gomi) and US laptop-noise supreme John Weise have managed to do that exactly. Those of you who managed to grab hold of John Weise's utterly jaw-dropping 'Soft Punk' earlier this year will know what sort of ear-bashing intensity the man is capable of, but little will prepare you for the Merzbow-meets-Hecker kind of screaming white noise you get on 'Terrazzo'. Little needs to be explained about the music, save for the last track is very appropriately named 'Absolute Hell'; this is not the disc to buy if you live in an apartment block, let's say it's the disc that almost encourages you to go get an ASBO. Since Masami Akita has moved back to analogue squelchery and Hecker has gone into the world of art-led academia it's nice to see these guys carrying on the rich tradition pioneered by Mego back in the day, and hearing some fresh spirit on the whole computer-noise subgenre. The cooperative of composer/improvisers John Wiese (Sissy Spacek) and C. Spencer Yeh (Burning Star Core) presents new a collection of works titled "Cincinnati." So far Wiese & Yeh's previous full-length documents have been culled from live performance situations and one could site "Cincinnati" as the duo's first studio album... Recorded face-to-face in late 2007 at Ashworth Tap Room in Cincinnati OH, "Cincinnati" reveals further unexpected developments and strategies of this ongoing partnership. Familiar machineries were primed, but an increasingly alien attitude was fed through and processed into churning and bewildering shapes. The results of these sessions were catalogued and surgically isolated into specimens by Yeh; a little editing employed to carve the forms somewhat presentable, but no "studio trickery" to mask the organic nature. Mastered by Saff Mastering to sharpen the bulbs and polish the blades, the whole of the fourteen tracks form a monumentally intimate body touched by indeterminate intuition, instant composition, and interior logic. After several private CDR releases, "Strange Tomorrow" is the first official album by this unique Russian Folk band, based in Jerusalem / Israel. Dreamingly beautiful, sad and at the same time weird and progressive Folk songs with a gentle early 70ies touch. The band uses a large variety of perfectly played acoustic instruments, as well as some fine electronic sounds. The powerful and empathetic (Russian) vocals from Fred Adra and his (background) singers give a very personal and unique touch to the music of Zlye Kukly. This band is really hard to compare to other artists; maybe some of their songs remind a bit to the folky Gae Bolg, the best balads of Boyd Rice, but mainly You can feel the spirit of the great early 70ies aera of Yugoslavian folk artists, such as Kladivo Konj in Voda, Svremena na Vreme, Drugi Nacin and others.
