A lot of good music has arrived at our command post during January. Those who prefer atmospheres and calm experiments should take a look throught the catalogue of great Italian label Afe Records, you'll find everything there: drones, soundscapes, rhythmic electronics..., whatever. Several discs from Greek label 1000 + 1 Tilt Recordings and American Zeromoon can also be referred to this field.

Russian scene also works in this direction - new releases from the labels Cold Graey, Faria Records, Aquarellist / Tantric Harmonies, Ostroga / Heart-Shaped Box., projects Hum, Cisfinitum, Galaxy The Incubator, Vetrophonia, Hladna. Also a debut release by a new ambient label Circles and Lines (split of Cyclofillydea / Places).

Our guys are strong enough in some hotter music too. This is the time to put out your magnitophones, comrades! To listen to fresh releases by Triangle, Emerson Lake & Headache / Monopolka and Alisa-Yhtye. Imported noise support is provided by US label Solipsism / Self Abuse Records, Israeli Topheth Prophet and French Symbolic Prod.

Good sonic feelings to you!

CD-R/CD

a034 -- "Chemical Nature" -- CD-R -- €9
2007 Afe Records, afe087cd
Ambient-Electronica / IDM / Drill'n'Bass. After the successful debut disc of Two Dead Bodies released in April 2006 it's now time for some more Afe / Bar La Muerte co-productions. One of them is a034's "Chemical Nature". a034 is a one-man band conducted by Stefano Pulici from Mlan, Italy. This project was created some ten years ago without any definite ambitions and was brought to the public attention when its first CD album was released by Tijuana Records (...the very first manifestation of what later became Bar La Muerte...) back in 1999. Today a034 is still alive and kicking and Stefano is also involved in other projects such as Nuke Satori, Six Figure Nigga, Figli di Diapa (with Hyena and Mbst8) and Lava (with Bruno Dorella of OvO and Ronin fame). During the years, his music was released on CD and vinyl by labels such as Bar La Muerte, Hydrophonic, Blackbean and Placenta, FVA, Homesleep, Napalmed and Blackqirex. "Chemical Nature" is a034's latest full-lenght offering and is a more ambient / experimental affair if compared to his previous CDs. The common trait of most of the tracks on the album, is the use of sounds grabbed from natural sources in more synthetic contexts. All tracks on the album are mixed together to create a seventyfour minutes journey... [label info]

The Afeman vs. Madame P -- "Journey Through the Shadow of the Sun" -- 3"CD-R -- €7
2007 AFE Records, afe50016, (ltd. 50)
Ambient / Drone Music. The Afeman is one of the multiple personality of Andrea Marutti, best known as Amon, Never Known, Lips Vago and Afe label owner. Madame P is the latest musical incarnation of italian artist Patrizia Oliva, also quite active in italian free-music scene. "Journey Through the Shadow of the Sun" is The Afeman's radical reworking of "Ombra di sole", one of Madame P's finest solo vocal tracks originally recorded and mixed by well-known italian electronic maestro Fausto Balbo. Madame P's voice is overcome by The Afeman's treatments and it is turned into an infinite array of ghostly whispers and hisses which slowly build up a droney lamentation of biblical proportions... Audiocum -- "Demolition is Progress" -- CD-R -- €8
Deserted Factory, (ltd. 99)
Radical sexually anxious politicized trash harsh noise. First track features distorted electroguitar. For maniacs. [YAOP description]

Bestia Centauri -- "Teratogenesis" -- CD -- €9
2007 Eibon Records / Afe Records, bes073 / afe093cd
Avantgarde / Experimental. Bestia Centauri is a solo electronic music project begun in 1999. "Teratogenesis" is its fourth release after "Ubbo-Sathla" (Somnambulant Corpse Recordings, 2002), "The Antideluvian Earth" (Afe, 2003) and "The Self Immolation Rite" (Somnambulant Corpse Recordings, 2004). The aim of Bestia Centauri is to create sonic landscapes that convey a sense of the numinous, the horrific, and the extra-human. Its sounds have much in common with those of electroacoustic music, but the compositional structures generally display a much greater sense of flow. With the new release, "Teratogenesis" (...an Eibon / Afe co-production...), Bestia Centauri defies once and for all the persistent mischaracterizations of its sound as belonging to the "Dark Ambient ghetto". Electroacoustic and computer music elements come brazenly to the foreground, and contribute even more so to the flow of "crawling chaos" that has always characterized and inspired Bestia Centauri’s compositions. The genesis and development of a monstrosity is the theme of this new work, which charts a course from mutated unicellular sonic DNA to the resultant life-form that reaches "from the jaws of the dragon, from the depths of the abyss"... Bill Catez -- "Macrohard" -- 3"CD-R -- €7
2002 Afe Records, afe036mcd
What's this? Deja-Vu anyone? ...hiding behind the Bill Catez moniker, one of the most aficionado Afe artists returns with a fresh concept: a short collection of tunes assembled recycling some of the cheapest and unusable sounds borrowed from his favourite OS. Funny and abrasive at the same time. Open your ears and he will show you once again what a man can do just with a tracker and a lot of imagination. [label info]

Brand, Steve -- "Looking into the Other" -- CD-R -- €9
2007 Afe Records, afe094lcd, (ltd. 100)
Ritual / Tribal / Ambient. Steve Brand has been creating sound art and visual art since the mid-80's. From 1995 to 2003 he was active as Augur, creating obscure and organic music which was released on many labels worldwide, including The Foundry, Manifold, Alluvial, Self-Abuse and others. During the years he had the chance to collaborate with artists such as Jeph Jerman (Hands To, Animist Orchestra), Rick Kitch (I Am Umbrella, Lucky Cricket), PBK, James P. Keeler (Wilt), Brooke Oates (Birds of Tin), etc. His atmospheres, alarmingly austere, with varying shades of gray, are drenched in allusion and a heightened sense of cinematic noir for the listener. According to his own words, "emotional aspects of a recording always come first". Consisting of six long tracks, "Looking Into the Other" takes up where "Awakensong" (...released on Afe in April 2006...) left off, expanding the exploration of twilight worlds. The album utilizes bells, synthesizers, voice, various flutes, medicine drums, cymbals, fiddle, rattles, prayer bowls, etc. Once again, with this work Steve has created an high quality and excellent album of deeply emotional music, and proved himself as one of the most inspired authors in contemporary Ritual Ambient... Chaos As Shelter -- "Live in New Jerusalem" -- CD-R -- €7
2003 Solipsism, Solipsism-48, (ltd. 100)
Two live tracks of beautiful dark ambient sounds from Israel. Over an hours worth of music, the first track was recorded in December of 2000 at New Jerusalem Studios, the Second is from August of 2000, and was recorded live at the Abama Theatre, in Jerusalem. Mixing drifting, dark ambient electronics with subtle rhythms and ethnic sounds, Chaos as Shelter are one of the more interesting new projects from the last couple of years, and his live work adds another layer to his already complex sound. Haunting, and meditative, this is music that evokes a world of it's own. [label info]

Chetyre Pozitsii Bruno -- "Body to Carry Out" -- CD-R -- €6
2007 Острога, OTR-014, (ltd. 52)
A mixture of drunk and sober folk, pop and club music, purely industrial and experimental tricks and schizoid vocals. Quite funny stuff! :)

Cisfinitum -- "COCK: Cisfinitum’s Only Culpable Killtime" -- CD-R -- €8
2007 Monopolka / Emerson Lake & Headache
The collection of previously unreleased tracks by dronish ape CISFINITUM (solitiously collected even breaking the limits of Monopolka’s idea of rawness). Raw, torturing and obviously goofy blasts of idiotronic. The CD itself contains of four panel strips and poster. [press-release]

Concrete Violin -- "End Times" -- CD-R -- €7
2003 Solipsism, Solipsism-55, (ltd. 100)
Raw noise music of American PE-school with monotonous noisescapes and lots of distorted vocals. Concrete Violin here isn't that agressive as his colleagues usually are, this album is even atmospheric to a certain extent.

Cotard Delusion -- "Le Dеlire De Nеgation" -- CD-R -- €4.50
2007 Triangle Records, [TR029], (ltd. 50)
New full-length album. Sick autumnal depressive/black-metal, raw archaic sound. Fallen leaves soaking under the rain. Surreal sound smears the consciousness. Recorded in ancient Vepsian village Shjoltozero in the end of September. The album contains reworked material from previous demo plus five completely new tracks. Long 60 minutes of suffering and pain. Silver sleeve with insert, limited to 50 copies. [press-release]

Cyclofillydea / Places -- "Dual Series 01" -- CD-R -- €5
2008 Circles And Lines, candl01, (ltd. 50)
Split of two St. Petersburg-based projects on a new Russian label. Cyclofillydea is known here by their weird performances combining absurd alco-theater, improvised rock and industrial-ambient moments. However you won't find anything of this stuff here. If I'm not mistaken, all the tracks were recorded by the main member of the band - Anton "Wispa" Viselsky - almost without help of his bandmates, and that's why the music is completely different. 5 short tracks of experimental ambient nature which sound quite calm and as it's often said, "cinematic". One of the tracks is a cover-version of Current 93 song "All the Pretty Little Horses"... Another half of the disc (or actually 2/3 of time) belongs to Places, and this is already serious dark drone ambient without much experimentation: vast soundscapes filled with natural, electronic and sometimes industrial sounds. A great promising release both for the label and the musicians.

2003 Solipsism, Solipsism-45, (ltd. 100)
One of the late recordings of this UK project, now defunct and re-organised as The Digitariat. Six old school tracks varying from noise to cut-up and from surreal concrete ambient back to noise.

Elephant Zyclus -- "Tripod" -- 3"CD-R -- €7
2003 Afe Records, afe027mcd
About one year after the release of his "Zyclus Over Berlin" CD-R album it's time for another small dose of Elephant Zyclus. We have chosen our favourite track and edited it for this release. Samples were subsequently given for treatment to a couple of selected Afe artist... Lips Vago, under his new DJ Lips guise, remained faithful to the spirit of the original track adding some more Techno danceabilty to make you sweat... a034 couldn't care less about the original and came up with a 200 bpm Drill monster based mostly on the bass loop. Spiral almost destroyed the unreleased "Promis" filling it with all sort of glitches. We enjoy this remix frenzy a lot, there will be more remix projects on Afe very soon. Let's enjoy "Tripod" in the meantime. [press-release]

Elephant Zyclus -- "Zyclus Over Berlin" -- CD-R -- €9
2002 Afe Records, afe028cd
Please welcome the return of one of the earliest Afe artists: Elephant Zyclus is here again with his second album. Recorded live directly to DAT/MD during many different sessions at Ariols Studio between late 1999 and early 2002, all the tracks were subsequently edited and mixed by A2M at Lips Vago Studio. In his new approach to Techno music Mr. Zyclus takes filtering to the limit while skycrapers of ultra-distorded beats fall down on devilish 303s. Industrial is often just around the corner, repetion and subtle variations abuse the listener from the beginning to the end. [label info]

Evans, Nat -- "Post Modern Sound Images" -- CD-R -- €9
2002 Afe Records, afe041lcd, (ltd. 100)
Nat Evans is a young composer from Indianapolis. He has been studying percussion for about ten years and has played in various orchestras around the Midwest. In 1999 he started his college career at Butler University, majoring in music performance. He has been recording odd electronic noodlings on his home stereo equipment for years and when he was given access to the Colin Clive Electronic Music Studio at Butler he started working on his first exclusive electronic compositions, while still maintaining the percussion side of things. His debut album is a beautiful collection of strung-freely surreal electronic compositions that takes a dark edge at times but hopefully conveys a real spiritual sensibility to the listener. Nat recently declared that "A peaceful mind is what I want from my music"... listening to "Post Modern Sound Images" we can't help feeling like that. [press release]

Exotoendo -- "Push Kara" -- CD -- €15
Athanor, ATNR 008
Exotoendo "Push Kara" has impressed all our distributors and customers for its ritual sound qualities somewhere between Lustmord and the Bonpos ritual. Once again, a must have for the dark ambiant/ritual lovers. This is also the second CD of this french project after one on Old Europa Cafe. One hour of ambiant ritual music recorded in an old industrial vat, which has been since destroyed. Push Kara is inspired by the Tibetan Book of the Dead, however the music is not only an interpretation of the Bardo-Thodol but is also the reflection of a reality: the essence expressed in the Bardo. Push Kara express the 6 states between life/death/rebirth, as explained in the booklet. Abundant and pure sound (which reflects the atmosphere of the strange place where it was recorded) with a few voices, percussions, pipes, violin and singing bowls. [label info]

Facialmess -- "Three New Songs" -- CD-R -- €7

Indeed three new songs of mid-aggressive harsh noise. In fact, it has very peculiar "electronic" sounding and sometimes turns into more experimental and even ambiental mode.

Faryus -- "Lucid Dreams" -- CD -- €10
2008 Faria Records, FAR-15, (ltd. 500)
This album is devoted to a phenomenon of the "Lucid dreams". A “lucid dream” - is a dream, in which the person is aware that he or she is dreaming while the dream is in progress. During lucid dreams you have control over the dream characters and environment, as well as the ability to perform otherwise physically impossible feats. The feelings which you feel during lucid dreams are very similar to those available during a waking state. Often they surpass the 'usual' with a saturation and intensity. This phenomenon has been researched by such well-known researchers as Stephen LaBerge, Robert Monroe, Carlos Castaneda, etc.. The 9th book of Carlos Castaneda - "The Art of Dreaming" explains more fully the events occuring within this album. The album is conceived as travel from the moment of falling asleep up to the depths of the infinite universe of the Dreaming: “Vivid Dream” - this is a dream, where colours and events are extremely bright. After awakening we never forget these dreams, it remains in the memory as a very exciting experience. It is the first phase of lucid dreaming and the beginning of our travel. We can then find "Clarity", passing through the first gate of dreaming to enjoy the "Lucid Dream". Opening infinite opportunities of the universe of dreaming we begin our "Free Flying" obtaining the sanctum sanctorum of the dreaming universe - to the "World of Inorganic Beings". [press-release]

Fhievel -- "Preghiera Per Una Stella" -- 3"CD-R -- €7
2006 Afe Records, afe088mcd, (ltd. 100)
Luca Bergero was born in Italy in 1980. If his electronic engineering studies helped his meeting with algorhytmic composition, at the same time they gave way to his crisis for technologic music pushing him to the concrete sound. His constant doubt, the desire to bring back art to the state of an unconditioned phenomenon - finally back in man's hands - and the necessity for development, contribute to a severe creation balanced between opposite sound sources. In 2003 his lowercase work "Vetri di carta" was produced by S’agita Recordings. In February 2005 the Portuguese label Creative Sources Recordings released "Pocket Progressive", a trio improvisation recorded along with Luca Sigurta and Claudio Rocchetti. His latest full-lenght work, "Le bapteme de la solitude", was released in late 2005 by Petite Sono. "Preghiera per una stella" (Prayer for a Star) is a long track composed in Spring 2006. Mainly built on long drones and tones, this release marks a definitive departure from Fhievel's ultra-minimal / microsound early works. Tiny concrete / electroacoustic elements are added along the road, as the drones flow in and out of the mix. Althought being very quiet and gentle, the music is far from being just sonic wallpaper, demanding concentrarion to the listener. [press release]

Flint Glass / Telepherique -- "Information Gigabyte" -- CD -- €11
2007 .Angle.Rec., .A.R.05.05., (ltd. 404)
Musically speaking, many artists from the industrial and post-industrial scenes have addressed the topic of future information shock, be it explicitly or implicitly; for example SPK, as early as 1979-1980…In 2006, it is still a hot topic, more than ever in fact. With a will to sonically explore the intricate and infinite mazes of information spun in the last few dozens years, and illustrate the tremendous changes which have been occurring during that period and which affect us all, TELEPHERIQUE’s Klaus Jochim and FLINT GLASS’ Gwenn Tremorin have joined forces for this collaborative album, which is indeed a concept album about information overload, the speed at which technological changes occur and the negative effects of this information overload on our psychological state. Both artists have sampled and gathered a great deal of sounds taken from computers or conferences on the topic, in a totally digital way from the FLINT GLASS perspective, and in an analogic/old-school fashion from the TELEPHERIQUE perspective. The idea was to confront the technological evolution with itself in the composition process, in a chronological way, by imagining the evolution from 1980 or so, up until now. You can then expect a pleasing and surprising ‘shock’ between FLINT GLASS’ trademark distorted idm-ish beats, intertwined with sinister and expansive atmospheres, and TELEPHERIQUE’s dirty soundscapes and machinesque old-school and sometimes or often lo-fi drifts for which they have been renowned since 1989. Let aural information flood you! [label info]

Galaxy The Incubator -- "UFO are Messengers of Satan" -- CD-R -- €8
2007 Operator Produkzion, OPERPRODUKT24, (ltd. 116)
Space Ambient / Noise inspired by a yellow book about "UFO mysteries" (where from the album title is taken, and each of 28 tracks is dedicated to one of the "extraterrestrial civilizations" described in a book). Vacuum drone pressure turns into abrasive tracks with blurred voices from without and then makes room for almost industrial futuristic pulsations and uneasy hiss of apparatus. Really new approach to the seemingly trite space subject. 116 copies in a double-cover. [press-release]

Gerstein -- "Here Comes Sickness" -- CD-R -- €9
2003 Afe Records, afe049cd
As we're approaching Gerstein's 20th anniversary, please welcome "Here Comes Sickness", a collection of mostly unreleased and rare tracks. "Here Comes Sickness" is a very particular work, not only because it sums up many years of music, but also because it showcases most of the different music styles that Gerstein has been wandering through during his lifetime. Gerstein has always been eclectic and those who followed him since the beginning are surely aware of this. In his own words Gerstein says: "My vision of music began under the experimental flag, and blending industrial, piano suites, ballads, noise and electronic has been my way of experimenting with sounds and emotions". Ten out of the fifteen tracks included on "Here Comes Sickness" are unreleased and they have been resting in Gerstein's closets for too long, so they were compiled for this collection. The other few songs originally appeared on a compilation and a very limited tape release. From the melancholy of "Warmth" and "There's Something On My Back" to the rage of "The Puke They Are" and "Addicted", from the happiness of "Bright Light, Bright Life" to the electronic trips of "Go Spread Some" and "Cosmic Waves" you can always feel Gerstein's touch. Hamn, Mark -- "Je Déchire l'Ongle aux Criminels" -- CD-R -- €9
2007 Afe Records, afe103lcd, (ltd. 150)
Post-Everything / Electroacoustic / Glitch. Francesco Giannico, best known as Mark Hamn, originates from Carosino a small town near Taranto, in the southern part of Italy. He's graduated in "Musicology and Musical Heritage" at the University of Lecce with a thesis on "History of film music". Musically he was born as an indie-guitarist, but an unexpected convergence with experimental electronic music some ten years ago changed his musical orientation, driving him into a different direction. During the recent years several of his works were published on the Internet in the form of free downloadable albums by popular net labels, including the italian Sine3pm. His musical approach is better described as a cinematic journey which pushes the boundaries of digital media even further by incorporating smooth melodies and gentle textures. More canonical instruments such as guitar and piano are constantly present into Mark's music, within interrupted structures or long and dreaming sonorous carpets. "Je dechire l'ongle aux criminels" is his first physical release and it is published as a friendly co-production between Afe and Bar La Muerte... [label info]

Hladna -- "Vetrokamni" -- CD-R -- €11
2007 self-released
Basic material for this new album of St. Petersburg-based project was found in old recordings from 1996, which then had been seriously reworked in 2007. If one tries to define the style, he can find electroacoustics, lo-fi, drone ambient, ritual, noise, etc... but all these definitions are secondary, and primary is the power, the spirit lying inside, and here are no problems with that. The disc instantly grasps your mind and holds until the end for an hour, and forces to press "repeat" afterwards. Earnestly recommended to everyone who loves hypnotic records. The artwork consists of a woven sack with a couple of inserts.

Hum -- "Caldron of Winds" -- 3"CD-R -- €7

Composed in 2004 and 2005, "Caldron of Winds" shows Dmitry's ability to create subtle & melancholic drones mixed with natural sounds... [press-release]

Hyena Hive -- "Serengeti Serendipity" -- CD-R -- €7
2006 .Angle.Rec., .A.R.05.04., (ltd. 30)
The idea of this project came like a gunfire, a last minute impulse, a few days before HYENA HIVE took the stage at ZOOBIZARRE by storm for their first live set ever... The two members of HYENA HIVE, M.-A. (OH! DEAD DARLING) and B. (NOS ROYAUMES / OH! DEAD DARLING) made a good habit of documenting, recording on-the-spot, on good old analog tape, each of their « jams », each of their sound creation, construction and deconstruction sessions …We were in the process of transferring the most recent sessions from analog to digital when came the idea of releasing, in limited edition, a block taken from said sessions… Here are 3 tracks which show well the nice symbiosis that exists between the two member of the duo, who create a sound entity of epic and monstrous proportions. There are only two of them but we sometimes have the impression we deal with a whole legion of noisicians …B. (bass/screams/noises) and M.-A. (percussions/noises/screams) are not about easy-listening stuff ; their music, a trance and a primal scream at the same time, is often progressive, sometimes more abrupt, and almost always machinal and machinesque. In that sense, the saturated psych noise resulting from their joint work, based on an acoustic instrumentation and topped with loops and extreme effects, is very close to the New York aesthetics of the beginning of the eighties or the Japanese school. The interests and background in industrial music (mainly of the very old-school and grating variety) of our two special characters probably has something to do with the many hammerings which they deploy along the three excellent tracks we present us here. First release of the duo! A new screaming machine in Montreal. [press-release]

The Impossible Flower -- "Anthophobia" -- CD-R -- €9
2007 AFE Records, afe064lcd, (ltd. 100)
"Anthophobia" was supposed to be released one year earlier along with "Roots and Fruits" to showcase the other side of The Impossible Flower. Unfortunately we had to pospone this release until... now! In the meantime, The Impossible Flower has gained more and more a cult status due to a collection of previously self-released material that was compiled and published by Benbecula Records in their monthly Mineral Series. Just like "Roots & Fruits", all the tracks that appear on "Anthophobia" were recorded some time ago, when The Impossible Flower was still a solo project by Andrew David Daly. Clocking in at about 50 minutes, "Anthophobia" (...an abnormal and persistent fear or flowers...) consists of nine great carefully produced IDM tracks that compete with themselves to conquer the listeners' favour. A very difficult match since all of them stand out one way or the other... [label info]

The Infant Cycle / UPhold -- "Our Past Present (Now Then)" -- 2x3"CD-R -- €9
2007 Afe Records, afe086mcd, (ltd. 100)
Experimental. Jim DeJong (The Infant Cycle) and Muffy St. Bernard (UPhold) are pleased to be partnered with each other for "Our Past Present (Now Then)". Their friendship dates back to the early '90s Canadian experimental tape scene, and they have worked together on occasion. The Infant Cycle was begun in 1992 by Jim DeJong, as a 21st birthday present to himself. Since then he has steadily created a large number of releases working with both "musical" and "non-musical" objects to create soundscapes that don't easily fit ready-made descriptions. UPhold was formed by Muffy St. Bernard in 1993, growing out of early-morning radio experiments on CKMS, the University of Waterloo's campus station. Those experiments were honed in the group Mindsculpture (a.k.a. Mind-skelp-cher) and have matured over time. His music has been released through his own label, Dangermuff Enterproses, and through Jim DeJong's The Ceiling. "Unrelated Work Tapes 7/7/04" by The Infant Cycle is a new chapter in his series of aural collages based on his own past, present, future and non-existant releases, where he explores the wide possibilities offered by manipulation / juxtaposition of different portions of audio materials taken out of their original context. The four UPhold tracks include assorted synthesizers, field recordings, found sounds and voices, metal percussions and other low-budget electronic paraphernalia used to create very complex and cinematic experimental music... After delighting his audience with the self-titled debut album in 1998 Dr. Kabal has finally come up with his second full-lenght release which is proudly presented as an Afe Records / Moonfear co-production. For all those who passionately remember the good old days of what was called "Intelligent Techno" (whatever that meant...) this will be a very enjoyable experience. Entirely recorded at Pergolab with the affectionate support of Leeza and the whole Afe Community, it literally sweats out the soul of the silicone chips that generated it. [label info]

Kasyansky, Grundik -- "Floating Point" -- CD-R -- €7
2007 Topheth Prophet, TP011, (ltd. 100)
Grundik Kasyansky plays feedback synthesizer, field recordings, theremin, samples and assemblage and here on 'Floating Point' one Fyodor Makarov plays toy concertina. The music is an 'audio collage based on three works written for dance', all mixed up into one piece, so the relevance of the music for dance is gone, I'd say. In his previous releases Kasyanksy was a man who showed his love for quiet music, with a big role for silence among the silence, and perhaps a soft peep here and there. But on this new release he makes a step forward. It may end out in his usual soft mood, but over the course over the thirty-six minutes that go before that he brings his material alive through a very strong audio collage. Field recordings and feedback, and occasional bang on the toy piano: it makes up quite a strong release. At times I was reminded a bit of Andrew Liles, even when Kasyansky's music sounded at times more fully loaded than Liles. It marks a great step forward for Kasyansky and is by far his best release to date. [Vital Weekly]

Kluster Cold -- "The Third Secret" -- CD-R -- €9
2002 Afe Records, afe037cd
After several tapes and two highly enjoyable self-released albums, not mentioning his most recent "Das Gassenfenster" EP, Carlo Ponte a.k.a. Kluster Cold is ready to reveal us "The Third Secret". An aura of kindness and calmness wraps up most of the tracks on this album, the same kindness and calmness you can clearly perceive standing in front of their author. Sober piano lines and fascinating synth melodies are backed up by simple but effective drums patterns. A vocoder appears on "The Romance Of Tar" which is later re-proposed in its "Flare-Up Version". Daniele and Paola Magarelli [both members of Runes Order] join in to come up with an enhanced version of "The Soldier", while Maurizio Pustianaz [Gerstein] takes care of the post-production and mastering. A short but intense album which will appeal to any fan of the best 80's Electro Wave tradition. "Waiting, waiting, waiting in the night..." [press-release]

Lavelle, Brian -- "A Stuffed Crocodile" -- 3"CD-R -- €7
2001 AFE Records, afe50005, (ltd. 50)
Computer Music / Minimal Electronica. Brian Lavelle has been creating music for more than ten years using a variety of electronic devices. His most famous works are the "Radios" series, composed with Richard Youngs, but we can't help mentioning his wonderful "How To Construct A Time Machine" guitar suite released by Staalplaat's subsidiary Bake Records. "A Stuffed Crocodile" is his longest piece of computer music and density is its key: lots of digital information is layered into dense clusters which complement and contrast each other and somehow still appear to sound melodic and harmonic. Leeza -- "Living in a Pixel" -- CD-R -- €9
2006 Afe Records, afe079cd
Six years passed since Afe released Plasmic, Luca Di Mattei's adventorous lo-fi electronica debut disc assembled with an almost total lack of equipment. During all this time Luca has been busy working on his many musical projects (Leeza, Hendy Van Morris, Bill Catez and Jabba) and had a few releases on Afe and on his own label called Moonfear. Luca also collaborated with Kabal on many of the tracks that appeared on his self-titled debut album, and also gave him some help on the following "Alone"... Leeza's music is generated using a laptop computer and no other electronic devices. It has its main roots in what was once called Intelligent Techno, and is clearly inspired by the good records published during the '90s by labels such as Warp, Rephlex, Skam, etc. With "Living in a Pixel", he has crafted an album of classic melodic electronic compositions which are very rarely tuneless. Lietterschpich -- "I Cum Blood in the Think Tank" -- CD -- €10
2007 Topheth Prophet / Heart & Crossbone, TP010 / HCB009
"...The power electronics and death industrial on this cd sound like Skin Chamber, Irm and Master/Slave Relationship crashed into each other head-on, afterwards the broken and mangled remnants were used as good or as bad as it went to build a new vehicle. The tortured electronica hums, growls and fluctuates; the slow and refractory music with sluggish rhythms has been outfitted with distorted, mentally deranged sounding vocals of the kind that instigates nightmares to boot. One track even inclines towards breakcore, but the insanity on this disc is quite different from the madness of Venetian Snares or Hellfish. Besides Merzbow-style white noise there are also discernible structures apparent in the sonic waves, this makes “I Cum Blood In The Think Tank” a listening experience which is all the more imperative. Drone lovers might want to check this out as well, by the way. This is digital doom for advanced nihilists." [Nanhold, Gothtronic]

Lopez, Francisco -- "Lopez Island" -- CD -- €11
2007 Elevator Bath, eeaoa011, (ltd. 500)
Elevator Bath is immensely proud to present this exquisite new work from one of the major figures of contemporary experimental music. Lopez Island was crafted from original environmental sound matter recorded in Lopez Island during the winter of 1999-2000. The resulting composition is 51 minutes of both delicate minutiae as well as startling power - crackling, howling, and haunting. The small island in Washington state provided the beautiful, isolated terrain for Lopez' gathering of raw sounds and, as a personal audio document (though clearly beyond mere documentary), the landscape has been expertly translated. A quintessentially chilling interpretation of the winter beach, Lopez Island is a worthy addition to Lopez' exemplary body of absolute concrete music and, indeed, one of his finest works to date. Packaged inside two elegant printed sleeves of 100% recycled paper, this compact disc has been issued in an edition of 500 copies. [press-release]

Ludvigsen, Jacob -- "Metal Chinchilla" -- 3"CD-R -- €7
2002 AFE Records, afe50007, (ltd. 50)
Computer Music / Minimal Electronica. With mp3 releases on Datanom and TechNOH Jacob Ludvigsen is one of the many digital presences in the ever-growing field of Computer Music / Minimal Electronica. His first proper release, or at least the first that you can put your hands on, appears now in the form of a 3" MiniCD which finds its place in the Afe "Ltd50" serie. When asked, Jacob states to be the wrong person to speak about his own music and we can fully understand and agree with him when we find that neither for us is an easy task... Rather minimal in its structure, almost essential and discrete in its form, "Metal Chinchilla" was mostly assembled using sounds of a concrete nature heavily manipulated via intelligent use of DSP algorithms, until they became unrecognizable and started living a life on their own. Completely abstract stuff for all those wandering into the outer limits of sonic exploration. [press-release]

Merzbow -- "Rattus Rattus" -- CD -- €11
2005 Scarcelight Recordings, slr40
Brand new Merzbow album on Accelera Deck's Scarcelight label - three tracks totaling just over 50 minutes. The first and shortest track '155' is a far more aggressive than other Merzbow material of recent - varied, erratic leaps from glitch to pure ear-shredding nastiness. '166' has much more breathing room and is centred around some heavily processed layered loops that gradually reach further intensity towards the end. The final and longest track 'Rattus Rattus Suite' is a 37 minute marathon in which the pace of the first two tracks find some common ground with enough variation throughout to keep it wired. The source material for these works isn't entirely clear but it generally sounds like analog noises put through digital processing. Recorded between 1999-2005. [Second Layer]

Mindmap -- "Plochy" -- CD-R -- €9
2003 Afe Records, afe047lcd, (ltd. 200)
"Plochy" is the debut album of slovakian band Mindmap and comes after the usual demos and the self-released "Live at Subterra" CD-R. Main people involved in Mindmap are Emil Mat'ko and Igor Ilias who take care of all the programming, with the help of Dana Mazalova on vocals, and other collaborators. We're pleased to announce that this is our favourite Afe release ever: if there has to be an album that synthesize all the different styles of electronic music we released until today, that is “Plochy”. It has beautiful ambient textures, it has real songs, you can dance to certain tracks and appreciate all the research that went into crafting each sound on others. "Plochy" (Slovak name for "strings" or another sustain sound) it’s a 360° journey into the realm of the electronic sound that starts with the suggested exoticism and the mysterious lyrics of "As We Were", and ends with the excellent electro trip-hop Ear Drum Kru Mapmind Remix of "Retrospective". In between these tracks you'll appreciate the calm atmospheres and intelligent rhythms configurations that permeate the whole work: the oniric labyrinth of "Da Song", the delicate guitars on "Cori Celesti", the suffered vocals on "Eman"... each track on this album deserves a special mention. Moan -- "Between / Associated" -- CD-R -- €9
2003 Afe Records, afe044lcd, (ltd. 200)
Moan's music is getting more and more recognition these days and "Between / Associated" is his second CD-R on Afe after the stunning "Clear Your Consciousness" released in June 2001. Rafal Sadej, the body behind the soul of Moan, was born and brought up in Siemianowice Slaskie, Poland, in the midst of atmosphere and sounds of industrial enviroment of ironworks and coal-mines, producing whole lot of unnatural sounds inscribing themselves into ordinariness of surrounding districts. Such influence permeated most of his previous works like "Isolate", "Desolate" and "Clear Your Consciousness", and it's also present here in a more subliminal way hidden somewhere between the ambient textures and the orchestral movements. "Between / Associated" was commissioned by the polish Youth's Gallery association to match the painting exhibition of Magdalena Sikora and was entirely composed by Moan using only his PC as instrument. The version of "Between / Associated" reproduced on this CD-R was recorded live on 23.02.2002 at the Cogitatur Theatre in Katowice during the opening of Magdalena Sikora exhibition. [label info]

Moljebka Pvlse / Seventeen Migs Of Spring -- "Ravha / Electricity Gardens" -- CD -- €10
2007 Topheth Prophet, TP015, (ltd. 500)
This collaboration album by Moljebka Pvlse (this time as a trio, with Karin Jacobson and Maria Nordin as the extra members) and the Israeli band Seventeen Migs of Spring contains both individual works from each project and a material that has been made together. It starts with Moljebka Pvlse's nearly 27 minutes long Ravha, a soundscape with breeze-sound and crowd noises as its most obvious elements. There's of course lots of other things in the mix as well, such as a violin and "walking in leaves and Styrofoam". What results is a strange, developing sound-art work that defies catgorization. It breaks and changes, yet stays intact at all times. Second in line is the shared work, Calm Gardens (at night), which clearly fuses together the styles of both groups into one whole. It is also the definitely best piece on the album. The solo part of Seventeen Migs of Spring is divided into five tracks, all of the different fro one another, yet existing as a logical procession. Electricity Gardens thus moves forward, track by track, in an increasingly minimalist, increasingly clinical-sounding fashion. There is nevertheless a warm tone and a certain fullness to it. In addition, the structure of even the most minimalist parts is remarkably solid; for example, Alternating Current uses in its squeals patterns that far more typical in harsh noise than in the glitch music it sound-wise resembles. This album is in no way easy to approach or light to listen to. It also becomes more and more difficult and increasingly distant from the listener the further it progresses, that's how weird it gets.. Despite these issues, it is a very fine piece of work, something one can genuinely call "experimental music" in the best sense of the phrase, and something that well combines the legacy of avant-garde to new innovativeness. Musica Radicum -- "Worlde Blis Ne Laste" -- CD -- €8
2007 self-released
Musica Radicum - which stands for "music of roots" in Latin - was based in 2002 with Snezhana Avtushkova and Viktor Rybalsky on bagpipes and Alexander Cherkashin on drums and oud. Soon Alexander Zhuro joined them, and in 2004 the quartet recorded its first album, "Prologue". A bit later the famous castle of the XIIIth century in Wyborg, a Swedish, then Finnish and now Russian town on the Baltic sea, became the workplace and the workspace for Musica Radicum. A year after medieval folk theatre “The Brotherhood of St. Olaf” was created. Saint Olaf was the Swedish konung, and the last saint, acknowledged both by the Orthodox and the Catholic churches; there’s a tower in Wyborg castle – one of the highest in Scandinavia - named after him. Thus, actors and showmen joined the musicians, and then performances by Musica Radicum got the new form – it’s the medieval mysterial theatre, where music and fire meet old epic legends, such as “The Life of Saint Olaf” (Sweden), “Syre Galeven” (Belgium), “Tamlin” (England), “The Dance of the Dead” (Sout-Western Europe), “Ritter Oluf and the Queen of Fairies” (Denmark), "Batleyka" (Belarus). In Autumn 2007 the band with new line-up records the second album “Worlde Blis Ne Laste”, that includes musical pieces from the theatrical performances of the Brotherhood. The band performs medieval and folk music with the appropriate instruments, mixing melodies of Western and Eastern Europe with harmonies of the Near East and archaic Eurasian cultures. The band’s credo is a Dionisian ecstasy of medieval minstrels, born in flames of improvisation and divine bliss. [press-release]

Never Known -- "Once in a Lifetime" -- CD-R -- €9
2007 Afe Records, afe013rcd
Never Known is the earliest music project of Andrea Marutti, best known as Amon and as Afe label owner. Andrea began his experiments with music in the early '90s using tapes and concrete elements. A few years later he also began to use synthesizers, samplers and other electronic devices, and founded the Lips Vago Digital Studio. Several releases of Ambient / Dark Ambient music were published by labels such as Eibon Records, Amplexus, Drone Records, Taalem, etc. on CD and other medias. Following "Dawn of an Era", "Once in a lifetime" was Never Known's second release. Recorded between August 1994 and August 1995, it was published by Murder Release as a C46 tape in September 1995. The tape was subsequently re-released on CD-R by Afe in March 1999. For this new edition, all tracks were remastered from the original tapes by the author in March 2007 at Lips Vago Digital Studio. The album consists of ten short ambient numbers mostly created with poor equipment which included several tape recorders, cheap microphones and objects. Basic synthesizers lines were subsequently added to some of the tracks. [label info]

Ninth Desert -- "Different Trouble Experiences of Twilight" -- CD-R -- €9
2007 Afe Records, afe073lcd, (ltd. 100)
Ninth Desert is the latest solo project of Cyril Herry from France, also known before as Ashes To Ashes, Sechres Mound (a duo in collaboration with Toy Bizarre), Lecanora and Exotoendo. During the years his music has been released by many international labels including Athanor, Old Europa Cafe, Harmonie, Verato Project, Taalem / Kokeshidisk and Mystery Sea... As the title aptly suggests, the album was recorded using many different kinds of manipulated, stretched, treated and stripped down sound sources. All the tracks on "Different Trouble Experiences of Twilight" were created mostly at night during Summer 2005 ("Headscape", "Combinations From a Persistent Night" and "Somewhere Close to the Skin") and Summer 2006 ("Selective Memory" and "Red Mute"). They represent different mentalscapes where all elements are forced to coexist in the same time and space by a complex internal memory system. [label info]

No Exit -- "One Step" -- CD -- €10
2006 1000+1 TiLt
Behind No Exit is one Joseph Fruiscante, of whom I never heard, and on 'One Step' he plays, according to the cover 'sax and bamboo string', while on one song one Myriam Boucris sings. Those are the facts about this cd, while we are kept in the dark about other information. In thirty minutes, Fruiscante plays some powerful music, clearly recognizable on his saxophone and less clearly on his string bamboo. What the cover doesn't tell us, is the fact that studio treatments play an equally important role here, especially delay and reverb are two important features (or perhaps I am wrong, and we don't have a studio here, but is the whole thing recorded in a tunnel). Fruiscante's music is minimal, even a bit drone related, but at the same time, and perhaps strangely enough it is also forcefully present, even a bit distorted in the deeper bass end of the release. An odd combination of mood music and some more distorted elements, Fruiscante moves here with outside any regular movements or rigid paths of improvisations, ambient, drone or noise. And that is, in my book, very fine. [FdW, Vital Weekly]

Noi, Hubert / Howie B -- "Music for Astronauts and Cosmonauts" -- 2 CD -- €12
2007 Laton, 042
This album is a collaboration of world renowned Britisch studio wizard, remixer and DJ Howie B, who has worked with the likes of U2, Bjork, Brian Eno, Tricky, Sly and Robbie, Soul to Soul and islandic artist Hubert Noi who’s musical collaborations include Phsycic TV and HOH aka Hilmar Orn Hilmarsson. Howie B is for the first time working with the Icelandic artist Hubert Noi on a musical project. Before their lines crossed when Howie used one of Hubert’s paintings for the cover of his solo album “Music for babies” 1996. “Music for Astronauts and Cosmonauts” is a soundtrack for a round journey in Earths orbit (297 km above Earth). The length of the tracks: “Morning”, “Day”, “Evening”, “Night” is 90 minutes (one round) that time-measure equals what takes 24 hours to see on earth (sunrise to sunrise). [label info] Very slowly and monotonous yet nice ambient work.

Normality / Edge -- "Inner Photographs" -- 5xCD-R -- €26
2002 AFE Records, afe50010, (ltd. 50)
Ambient / Industrial / Harsh Electronics. Normality / Edge's "Inner Photographs" box-set consists of five discs and collects all the tracks produced by this project during its existence between 1996-1999. All material was reworked and put into shape in 2001 and is released here for the first time. All tracks were created by Hue using only cheap microphones, various objects, primitive sound editors and Dos sequencers. No midi machines, synths, external samplers and so on were ever used. The musical contents are different for each disc and vary from the Dark / Isolationist atmopheres of "Ambient Grooves: A Drowning Fish" to the harsh and distorted assaults of "Industrial Noises: Avoid Contact", passing through the more layered and rhythmically structured "Anxiogen Dances: Instable Balance" and "Dark Rhythms: Monochrome Life", ending with the less obsessive and gentler "Unpleasant Songs: Il Confine (The Edge)". It would really make no sense getting into the details about each track since this work must be seen / listened as a whole. The Normality / Edge "Opera Omnia" is completed by a sixth disc entitled "Nervous System Overload" recorded back in 1995, which is sold separately from the box and is a mixture of Power Electronics and strange ambiences created assembling only sounds captured with microphones and without any kind of sequencer. The inspiration for all the music contained on this box is the sadness, anxiety and angst felt by the author at that time. Life changes, things get worse or better for anyone and Hue is making completely different music now with his Sparkle In Grey project... but that is another story and we are sure we'll have the chance to tell it later on... "Inner Photographs" is here and it's now: don't miss it. The 6th CD-R to complete the "Inner Photographs" box-set is available "on demand" to all those who will send back the replying coupon included in the box. [label info]

Obozdur -- "Proceedings of Court of Enquiry" -- CD-R -- €6
2007 Heart-Shaped Box Prod., HSB-019, (ltd. 26)
This release contains even less sense than deliberately idiotic discs and cassettes of omnious Monopolka. Home dictaphone recording about how two students and one girl try to make the homework on comparison of distinctive features of utopian socialists of XVI-XVII centuries. At the same time they play on all the instruments around (toys, accordion, harmonica, etc.). All this tragically ends by reading phragments of Tommazo Kampanella's works with soundtrack from "Requiem for a Dream" movie.

Ornament -- "Unicorn Lullaby" -- CD-R -- €9
2005 AFE Records, afe066lcd, (ltd. 100)
"Unicorn Lullaby" was self-released by Ornament in a few copies back in 2000 and is now published by Afe in a fully remastered and repackaged version that showcases the author's visionary attitude. Due to the poor distribution of the original version, this is probably Ornament's less know work, but it's probably his best attempt at Dark Ambient music contaminated with Industrial elements. If we look for some kind of internal reference wondering through the whole Afe catalogue, this can easily be found in Never Known's "Dawn of an Era", but "Unicorn Lullaby" has of course a personality of his own. The distinctive overall sound of the album is subtly achieved with a rich shady substratum of distant sounds that are intentionally and elegantly kept in the background and are fully appreciable at a mid volume level. Pholde -- "Aperture of the Internal Surface" -- CD-R -- €9
2007 AFE Records, afe098lcd, (ltd. 100)
Dark Ambient / Sound Art / Experimental. Pholde is the dark ambient project of sound artist Alan Bloor who is also known for his extreme noise music project called Knurl. In the late '80s he began performing noise backgrounds at poetry readings in which he experimented with his bass guitar by placing metal objects on the strings to produce the sounds. Since that time, Bloor has delved heavily into experimentation with found objects as sound sources. While Knurl unleashes harsh noise performances and side-project Pyrox creates intense electronic drones, Pholde creates dark ambient soundscapes by the bowing and scraping of self-created metal sound-sculptures with hand files, smooth and threaded metal rods, angle iron and blocks of steel to produce atmospheric, haunting soundscapes. His music was released on many labels worldwide, including Alien8 Recordings, Gears of Sand, Mystery Sea, RRRecords, Taalem and Troniks. As usually happened with all previous Pholde's works, the two pieces on "Aperture of the Internal Structure" were produced and recorded by Alan in single sessions without any overdub, using only his sound-sculptures as source material aided by reverb and some equalization... This is the second long length record made by the Italian artist Punck, alias Adriano Zanni. “A Constant Migration” is an evolving continuous trip into the experimental music between light drones and clanging atypical rhythms, whispering voices and barking dogs, field recordings and relieving melodies, and most of all between reality and fiction. The whole record is done under the final supervision by Hue (Matteo Uggeri aka Sparkle in Grey & Normality / Edge) that smoothed and mastered all the Punck’s accurate sound sculptures. [label info]

Rensek -- "Rensek EP" -- 3"CD-R -- €7
2000 AFE Records, afe50008, (ltd. 50)
Minimal / Microscopic Explorations. The nature of this very minimal glitchy tracks is often so abstract and microscopic... People not accustomed to the outer limits of sonic exploration could easily read it as some kind of "trouble" in their electrical equipment or as a faulty disc. They wouldn't be so far from truth since most of the sounds on this EP were sourced from defective and skipping CDs... Rensek is the new project of american guitarist Eric Kesner. We already had the pleasure to release his True Colour Of Blood's "The Significance Of Secrecy" Dark Ambient debut CD-R album some time ago and we'll soon be bringing to your attention his newest "(Absence)" in the form of a regular CD in collaboration with Eibon Records. A True Colour Of Blood remix of "Aorist" appears as the opening track of this EP creating a perfect bridge between the two projects. [label info]

Sam & Valley -- "Stupid Love or Smart Laugh" -- CD-R -- €9
2007 AFE Records, afe075lcd, (ltd. 200)
Sam & Valley were born in 1995 when Alex de K, who was active in The Kazuyuchy, a japanese punk band, met Special and Max in Tokyo. They recorded many songs mixing their own extremely different tastes, defined their style as Unsuitable Rock and choose the Sam & Valley moniker to present their work to the world. Four Sam & Valley albums were published between 1997 and 2000: "My Favorite Clinic", their debut, was notably released on Aphex Twin's Rephlex label, "Unsuitable Japanese" and "A Miracle Is Simple" were released on Angelika Koehlermann in Europe, while "Torso" was published by the canadian label Awhisp. The project quit in 2003 leaving a lot of unreleased tracks behind them... Luckily The Afeman was granted access to part of their archive, so he picked up some favourites and compiled "Stupid Love or Smart Laugh" with them, hopefully bringing their music to the attention of old and new fans. With every following CD these artists created more and more their own successful style in the field of Space-ChillOut. The sequences, strings and Moog-Solos of Klaus combined with the electronic rhythms, athmospheres and melodies of Pete Namlook. From “The Dark Side of the Moog IV” on producer-legend Bill Laswell occasaionally joined the project with his extraordinary Dub-Bass and the climax of the Series so far was the concert of Klaus and Pete in Hamburg 1999 released under “The Dark Side of the Moog VIII”. Serra, Raffaele -- "Europe Endless" -- CD-R -- €9
2002 Afe Records, afe045cd
Raffaele Serra has been wandering through analogic synthesis for many years, then came digital synthesis and analogic machines were out of fashion... then they rised again from oblivion for the joy of the ones who never forgot about them, including Raffaele. Now it's time for him to search for new directions in sound and the most adventurous way seems to be soft-synthesis. A joyful sparkle appears again in the eye of the electronic shaman. "Europe Endless" tries to describe in music the atmospheres and movements of some of the most particular and meaningful european cities. Just like in a urban late night-trip all tracks are surrounded by some kind of a mantric halo, a soft circle of light that keeps turning on itself over and over again. This music demands repetition to generate and keep the appropriate state of mind. The listener should not try to resist it, just let it flow. Endlessly. [press-release]

Post-noise Guitar Grooves / Desktop Jazz. Sidra is a new collaborative project between P. NG5361. Bandera (from post industrial Italian pioneers Sigillum S, Sshe Retina Stimulants, Komplet and many other sonic extremities) and Tiberio Longoni (former guitarist of seminal Italian punk originators Jumpers and 198X, as well as 80’s psychedelic legends Peter Sellers & The Hollywood Party). Here they have decided to give a jarring audio shape to their long standing friendship and merge very different musical histories through a common cultural background (where series of antagonist social / ideological references show a cutting edge mix of future driven and vintage alternative expression modes). The result so far is a dense mesh of post-noise guitar canals, mating with desktop jazz and redefining blues as heard from the ears of hybrid creatures from a Yellow Lagoon…[press-release]

Following a series of three self-released EPs published during 1999-2000, the slightly longer "La Sindrome di Stoccolma" ("The Stockholm Syndrome", distributed by S'agita Recordings), the beautiful "Terre" multimedia CD-Rom (in collaboration with director Manuele Cecconello) and a few compilations appereances, here at last we have the full-lenght debut album of Luca Sigurta from Biella, Italy. "La Vera Macchina D'Argento" (...or "The Real Silver Machine", if you prefer...) was composed and recorded in 2003 using many different sources/instruments such as broken/faulty discs, environmental/field-recordings, guitars, percussions, various objects and self-built devices... To enhance the intimate feeling of the music, according to the author's fascination with low volume levels, and the nature of the recordings themselves, the disc was mastered at -3dB, a volume lower than the standard 0dB, and is better experienced when listened in relax mode with or without headphones at a low volume. Six Dead Bulgarians vs Moon Far Away -- "Matiza" -- CD -- €12
2007 Shadowplay Release, SPR 056, (ltd. 500)
This release was initiated by Archangelsk-based project SIX DEAD BULGARIANS which long time ago was one of the originators of Russian industrial music and even had recorded several collaboration tracks with MFA at that time. Now they play experimental electronics and for this album some MFA tracks from "Belovodie" album and some compilations were remixed in lounge / IDM style. Specially for this project MFA has recorded two folklore tracks from Archangelsk region also to be re-arranged by SIX DEAD BULGARIANS. IDM / Weird Electronica. More than five years passed since we had the chance to release Happy Sad, Snotra's debut EP and after all this time we're now happiest to bring you "All Done By John", his latest work at the time of writing. "All Done By John" was already released in Japan some time ago as number four in the "Electric Avenue" MiniCD-R 3" series by Tokyo based label Duotone Records, and we're glad to made it available again in a fully remastered version. There are very significative differences between the old tracks contained on "Happy Sad" and the relatively new ones of "All Done By John". Althought being of the same weird and unsettling nature, they showcase a much more mature approach to music. Or better, that would be the case if "mature" was a word that can be easily applied to Snotra, uhm... [label info]

Sparkle In Grey -- "The Echoes Of Thiiings / Fadiiing Echoes" -- 2 CD-R -- €13
2005 Afe Records, afe060lcd, (ltd. 100)
Following his works created using the Normality / Edge moniker, whose "opera omnia" was released on Afe as a 5+1 discs box-set in 2002, "The Echoes of Thiiings" was recorded by Hue in 2001. Compared to the harsh and obsessive noise-driven compositions of Normality / Edge, "The Echoes of Thiiings" sounds like a gentle spring breeze coming through your window. With its beautiful and calm synth melodies caressed by voices of children at play, the aptly titled "When I'll Be Child" perfectly fits this description and is probably the track that better summarize the mood of the whole disc. "Fadiiing Echoes" is "The Echoes of Thiiings" twin disc, it contains the same tracks, in the same running order, remixed by aal, Hubert Mensh, Talk Show Host, Pierpaolo Leo, Ether, Luca Sigurta and Marco Aureggi, Nicola Ratti, The Impossible Flower, Telepherique, S.Talker Inc, Norm, Never Known and Meta:Led, and a special extra track created by Crashcars For The Ravers. Stimbox -- "Caveat Emptor" -- CD-R -- €7
1998 Solipsism, Solipsism-15, (ltd. 100)
Juicy harsh noise. Two 30-min tracks of non-stop energy.

Strotter Inst. -- "Live Act at Oblo" -- CD -- €10
2005 1000+1 TiLt
Excellent turntablism (of the Marclay/Jeck school rather than the Invisibl Scratch Piklz variety) by Swiss boffin Christoph Hess, producer of the palindromic single Anna (whose tracks played in opposite direction and met in the middle). On this dociment of a live show in Lausanne, he takes a diferent approach. Like Otomo Yoshihide (and, lest we forget Richard James) before him, he dispenses with vinyl altogether and exploits the mechanical properties of his array of decks rather than using them as playback tools. The variety of sounds and rhythms he produces is remarkable. Alongside the expected static pops and smears of smeary noise, moving in and out of sync in delightful Steve Reichian fashion, there are further preparations involving (i think) the bowing of strings by the spinning turntables themselves, a feature that recurs at intervals to provide the set with a satisfyingly episodic narrative. Indeed, Hess' deft pacing of his necessarily limited sound palette is what sets this apart. [The Wire]

Svasti-Ayanam -- "Sanklesa" -- CD -- €10
2007 Eternal Pride Productions, EPP 010
Svasti-ayanam is Peter Andersson's foray into dark, Tibetan-Nepalese ambience. Andersson is well known for his work as Raison D'etre, Atomine Elektrine etc. In this incarnation, his signature Raison D'etre sound has been modified in an incredibly pronounced, and effective way. Sanklesa is marked by strong tribal rhythms that draw the listener into distant, foreign, ritual soundscapes. Andersson has released a prolific catalogue of music, that includes many CD's, limited vinyl and countless compilation appearances. Album incl. 2 exlusive bonus-tracks. [press-release]

"Havamal" is the second album of Czech project Tabor Radosti, it is homage to the depth of beliefs of our ancestors and already has all typical signs of their current production – magic and ritual, distorted vocals with archetypal motifs, a vast variety of emotional surfaces and rhythmical sequences. [industrial.org] Ritual dark ambient with electronic touch.

Tabor Radosti -- "Lamat" -- CD -- €10
2006 Epidemie Records, EPR 055, (ltd. 500)
Capital discovery of our label, precise shamanic ritual dark ambient. Mysterious duo coming from magic Czech town Jihlava had been composing at their studio for long nine years and only a year ago decided to reveal the material to the audience. They started to perform life and were hearty welcome on the prestige musical festivals such as Prague Industrial Festival taking place in the Capital of the Czech Republic, Apocalyptic Visions in Slovakia or Wroclaw Industrial Festival in Poland. The band is presenting their debut album “Lamat” to you right now. [press-release] Magic sound territories are even more complex and impenetrable; the inner architecture of the tracks features orchestral themes and colorful sound ornaments. Tabor Radosti has reached the status of the Czech dark-electronic band number one. [industrial.org]

Two Dead Bodies -- "Reflect" -- CD-R -- €9
2006 Afe Records, afe081lcd, (ltd. 133)
Experimental / Extreme / Tribal Noise Rock. We're particularly glad to introduce an Afe / Bar La Muerte co-production. This release is the first collaborative effort between us and the famous italian independent label. This disc is also very important because it is our very first non-electronic release. Yes, the music on "Reflect" was electronically assembled and processed, but its intimate consistence is of a Noise / Rock nature. Two Dead Bodies is an extreme music project that involves Luca Mauri and Andrea Reali, both originating from the hinterland of Milan, Italy. They both are already active in the impro / jazzy / freeform band I/O and in the white funk wavers Kokoro Mayikibo. Two Dead Bodies were born in the hot summer of 2005 when Luca and Andrea recorded their first tracks during a sunny afternoon impro session. After recording, all audio material was re-processed, re-mixed and mastered by LooKe (Luca). Divided in five parts, it was given the title of "Reflect". [label info]

100% live concrete music - fragments of some events in some spaces: someone speaks, something crackles, bangs, plays, starts making noise, etc... always abrupt things are happening. All these "field" recordings are done quite professionally and nicely reproduce sound pictures of these events. Besides audio tracks (starting from track 2), this release contains multimedia information. Released in "Consume Buy 2006" series by American Zeromoon label available for sale only in 2006.

Wolkspurz & Ramirez -- "Music For Your Holidays" -- CD-R -- €9

V/A -- "Audio-Tourism" -- CD -- €8
2003 Laznia / State Modern Art Centre - Kaliningrad
Field recordings / contemporary sound art. "Any form of tourism is connected with geography. As the experience shows, audio-tourism isn't an exception. One of the basic goals of this project was to explore the soundscapes of two towns - Gdansk and Kaliningrad, and I got convinced that these sound portraits are mostly identical (with minor differencies). The main conclusion from this project for me was the influence of geography on creative work, Poland with it's open borders and compact territories disposes to live, improvised and mobile form of work. Russian spaces and closed borders on the contrary make for studio reclusive work..." [Danil Akimov, project curator] Session members: Sergey Ivanov, Marcin Dymiter, Vladimir Igoshin, Angelike Fojtuch, Vadim Khaly, Adam Witkowski, Olaf Nowaczyk.

Kaaos in Eccentris / Liddikoatight & Leif Elggren -- "No-One Takes One Too Free / Trapezoid" -- 7" -- €8
2004 Some Place Else, SPE7SP04031
Kaaos in Eccentris - on this session Mockingwyrd, Ovro, Niko Skorpio and Ibrahim Terzic - create an oddly trance-inducing, almost groovy piece that limps forward powered by the combination of hypnotic bass and crackling rhythms. Liddikoatight is a new Japanese band with Kouhei Matsunaga among others. Leif Elggren, from Sweden, has worked with sound and performance art since 1980 and has a long list of releases, books and live-performances under his belt. For this record, Liddikoatight and Leif Elggren collaborated via telepathy. Mix of the results form the track Trapezoid. [label info]

Reptiljan / Ibrahim Terzic -- "Pangrenade / Yuck Brij" -- 7" -- €8
2004 Some Place Else, SPE7SP03028, (ltd. 300)
Reptiljan is Niko Skorpio in his most energetic to date, creating sparkling electronica wherein everything from noise to breaks and glitch to exreme metal meet and explode. On this 7", Pangrenade looks for the point where grindcore and noise become one through violent digital treatments. On the other side, Ibrahim Terzic examines the beauty within the ugly. Yuck Brij shows Terzic pushing his unique style a few steps further with mind-piercing screeches, manifold rhythms and mutating melodies. Those who witnessed his amazing gig at Avanto Festival, Finland know that this cannot be missed! [label info]

Visions -- "Celestial Sphere" -- 10" -- €11
2006 .ANGLE.REC., .A.R.10.02., (ltd. 270)
Visions, or the thousand and one perspectives of the intersidereal infinite, transposed into sounds conjuring spherical images. Frederic Arbour, with his Visions project, released the "Lapse" cd in 2005 on his own label Cyclic Law, and this album stands out as one of our faves of that year in terms of ambient music. So it’s not surprising that we were enchanted by the 2 unreleased tracks Visions submitted to us towards the end of that same year, and that we decided to make a 10" maxi with those tracks. The sound themes and perspectives proposed within the 2 tracks are numerous, and they harmonize in a sublimely complex and thoughtful way. The main backdrop is composed of dark synthetic layers which stretch towards the infinite, and which welcome gradually, among others, sound motifs that are acoustically generated and that echo each other, reinforcing the effect of sound vortex into which the listener is dragged. Ethereal melodies accentuate the epic character of this odyssey into the unfathomable interstellar immensity. A release which will appeal to fans of dark-ambient, of course, but which will also delight fans of atmospheric music in general! [press-release]

Amon -- "Foundation" -- 2 CD -- €13
2005 Afe Records / Eibon Records, afe070cd / Amn053
"Foundation" is an Eibon Records / Afe co-production that comes in the form of two full-lenght CDs packaged in a beautifully designed heavy cardboard sleeve. It features most of the tracks originally contained on the first untitled Amon album which was out on Murder Release in 1996, the whole "Mer" limited edition CD-R released by Blade Records in 2000, and a few unreleased/rare bonus tracks. Popular demand for a "Mer" second edition has always been high, and five years later from its original release it's time to make it available to the public again along with an improved version of the untitled Amon debut CD. All the tracks on "Foundation" were performed and recorded by Andrea Marutti between September 1995 and April 2000 at Lips Vago Digital Studio and were fully remastered and post-produced on purpose of this release. "Foundation", the title track, was sourced from a Memory Moog improvisation played by Riccardo Marmugi. "Prepare to Leave" was originally released by Eibon Records on the "Dissolution Fahrenheit" CD compilation back in 1997. [Afe press-release]

Bianchi, Maurizio & Fricke, Siegmar -- "Stroma~Konkret" -- CD -- €10
2006 Monochrome Vision, (mv07), (ltd. 500)
Extra heavy fusion of industrial noise and musique concrete, this exclusive collaboration unites forces of two legendary musicians who were witnessed the roots of industrial music movement. It consists of three long tracks of mechanical aggression, clinical obsession and uncompromizing psychic attack. Dedicated to the memory of Pierre Schaeffer, this is the second part of ongoing series, started by Tibprod label CDR-release. An electroacoustic ploughing is macerating our reflective horizons: 'Stroma~Konkret' is its romantic name, but the spectroscopic effect is valiantly spiritual. The outcome of this rarefied and perturbed project is stirring with its germinative disarticulation and its contrasting caution... A plenty sense of paroxysm is troubling the conscientiousness while an expiatory framework instructs some stromatic predilections. It is a concrete soundness to reutilize the simplified trembling of human vicissitudes. May we triturate the scientific truths with a probative logic? 'Stroma~Konkret' extirpates the shrunk bitumen from our weathertight self-injury as the exiguous coenaesthesia mixes again a reformative naivety. (Maurizio Bianchi) These compositions "cellular-organelles" took place inside the spheroid surroundings of hydrophilic microfloras in the course of the radiometric age 2006. We, the concrete operators, continously analysed stromal loops by vehement freeze-fracture observations and autothrophic microfillaments. The aqueously phytoplanctonic sub-structure of this "symphony nebulitique" characterizes the terminal exhumation of cryphonectric ferro- chelatase. Constant research by isolelectric focussing on ultramicroscopic events led to the one and only nuclear-encoded aim: the sphaerialic polymetamorphose of stromatic plastocyanin. Brand, Steve -- "Awakensong" -- CD-R -- €9
2006 AFE Records, afe084lcd, (ltd.
His atmospheres, alarmingly austere, with varying shades of gray, are drenched in allusion and a heightened sense of cinematic noir for the listener. Consisting of nine tracks, "Awakensong" was recorded and mixed in early 2005, and is an highly enjoyable excursion into good meditative / ritual / tribal Ambient music. The album utilizes shakuhachi, Native American courting flute and bass flute, udu, medicine drum, camel bells, gongs, voice, prayer bowls and keyboards... [label info]

Dissecting Table -- "Rancid Smell" -- CD -- €12
2006 Waystyx, WR26, (ltd. 100)
Dissecting Table - is a project of Japanese musician Ichiro Tsuji, quiet prolofic nowadays. This CD contains both elements of typically Japanese fat harsh noise spiced with madly distorted vocals (roars and screams) and more soft, though more occasional, electronic fragments. The last track unexpectedly sounds in completely different style: string passages with drum beats change into sudden metal noise and back.

Dronaement -- "Allein... Unter Menschen" -- CD-R -- €9
2004 AFE Records, afe051lcd, (ltd. 150)
Dronaement is active since 1997 and is the main musical project of Marcus Obst who lives in the South area of what once was East Germany. Marcus is also involved in the Das Rhythmische Ornament experimental drone-punk duo and runs a small label called Nauze [Muzick]... After a few amazing tape albums he joined the Drone Records serie with the "Wassermond" 7", which was based on a collaboration with Jim De Jong, followed soon by a split LP with The Infant Cycle (Jim De Jong again....). Since then he released some marvellous solo CD-R albums on Dachstuhl, Nauze [Muzick] and Mistery Sea that everyone with an even small interest in Drone / Experimental music should immediately put their hands on. An "analog drones meet muffled guitars" collaboration with french guitarist Rabbit's Sorrow (Sebastien Roux) was also released on CD by Le Cri De La Harpe. "Allein... Unter Menshen" is the fully remastered re-version of the tape originally released on Nauze [Muzick] back in 1999. The first long track entitled "Allein..." was recorded using an electric organ as the only sound source. It is a beautifully calm drone played on the G tone, which is the tone of the day, and is meant to induce a state of meditation into the listener. "...Unter Menschen" is another very long track, some kind of a floating collage constructed from hours of field recordings taken in a big railstation hall in Leipzig, Germany. The last track, "Abriss" is a short but beautiful exclusive addition to this CD-R re-release... Dronaement is clearly one of the most talented drone-based music project around and "Allein... Unter Menschen" is a nice rediscover of one of his earliest releases. [label info]

Ellende -- "Heroin" -- 3"CD-R -- €7
2004 AFE Records, afe50012, (ltd. 50)
"Heroin" starts as a sparse and pleasantly vibrating drone-based piece and slowly get crowded with pulsating and swirling elements. As the swirlings continue and percussive sounds are introduced, the music evolves into some kind of hazy and hypnotic dream populated by creatures speaking with backward/high-pitched voices. Approaching the end of the track, all these elements slowly fade away leaving room for otherworldly noises/effects and a sort of vocoderized voice. As usual, the concept for this releases is focused on a writing by Wim Bontjes, a deceased Ellende member. [label info]

Fractal Heads -- "Light on the Stepped Plates" -- CD -- €9
2006 Laton, 043
This duo from Novokuznetsk composed from Sergei Malkin (Radius) and Dmitry Kravchuk first appeared in the program of "Cultural hero of XXth century" festival in 1999, and debuted on the Exotica label compilation, remains quite unknown outside Kemerovo region for a long time. In 2003, their album "Dreampainting" was released on very limited edition CDR by St.-Peterburg based label Fight Muzik. Finally, this full-length CD is released officially, but the material itself was recorded back in 1999. Actually, this type of music is a bit dated, but in terms of cultural isolation it's really exciting. They combined in very smart way some minimal electronic sequences, mysterious radiovoices and polyrhythmic patterns, all created by soviet analogue synthesizers. The aesthetic feeling is very close to Kraftwerk circa early 80s, that means emotional insensibility and rarefied atmosphere. The static approach in arrangements and simple melodies slowly transformed to amorphous sounds disappearing in the past makes me think about technocratic aspects of ambient music. [Dmitry Vasilyev, Independent Electronic Music]

The Impossible Flower -- "Roots and Fruits" -- CD-R -- €9
2006 AFE Records, afe063lcd, (ltd. 100)
Post-Everything. Simplicity is probably the key to Andrew David Daly's longly prepared and awaited debut on Afe. Basically recorded a few years ago, when The Impossible Flower was still a solo project (Gareth Dickson have joined forces with him in the meantime, to maximise the potential of their organically based sound), "Roots and Fruits" is simply brilliant. Consisting of seven tracks clocking in at about forty minutes, created mostly using guitar, piano, sampler and electronics, the album opens with the lovely bowed strings of "Bees and Honey". The track proceeds introducing reversed guitar lines, sampled finger exercises, arpeggios and chords that perfectly summarize The Impossible Flower approach to electronically influenced guitar music... Monstrare / Wilt -- "Graveflowers" -- CD -- €11
2004 .ANGLE.REC., .A.R.05.02., (ltd. 500)
For the last few years, the enthusiasts have been enjoying the evolutionary sound creations of CORDELL KLIER (MONSTRARE) and JAMES KEELER (WILT). The first, very often, in his solo adventures, works in a register which one could hail as "dark glitch", or a close encounter of the third kind between modern technology and the abyss, as the second builds us somber sonic monoliths, raw blocks of black bruitist matter and dark lo-fi atmosphericsЕ It was no doubt that the collision, or fusion, between these two aesthetics tinged with psychotropism was going to give way to a genuine journey, a unique and peculiar epic, in the image of the respective projects of the two creators. There is a natural fit between these projects as both focus on dark mathematical projections. In this monumental production, MONSTRARE feeds us with new-school sonorities as WILT opts for old-school sounds, an it goes without saying that one used the source sound material of the other to crystallize his own visions, and vice versa. Side by side, the intemporal, uncompromising and often arrhythmic sonic fluids secreted here sometimes have a textured minimalistic feel, sometimes reflect a will of nuanced saturationЕ Here one will easily recognize the traditional ambient and subtle black noise WILT feel, just pushed to the utmost level, with MONSTRARE doing the dark-clicked drone he is renowned for, but in an especially demented way. Alternately, the listener finds himself wandering through the uneven meanders of subterranean cathedrals and flying over futurist cities radiant with an aura of strangely coloured neons. But there are a thousand and one other possible interpretations. Organic yet bleak, the music presented here symbolizes the passing of life into subharmonic spirituality. Now is your turn to make yourself your own interior movie while listening to this album! [press-release].

Serra, Raffaele -- "Digital Avatar" -- CD-R -- €9
2002 AFE Records, afe039cd
As usual we are very pleased to introduce Raffaele Serra in his latest incarnation... Many times Raffaele has flirted with ethnic references in his compositions, his new solo album fully reveals the great influence that Indian culture has always had on his music. The disc begins with some kind of long electronic mantra which perfectly settles the mood for what's to come... Althought no fields recordings are used this time, we can clearly perceive the presence of ethnic elements through the accurate use of Santur, Organ and Tabla sounds. "Water-Lily" perfectly sums up the philosophy of the whole album and we really can't help to mention that "Digital Avatar" ranks among Raffaele's best ones. All the tracks on this album were composed, performed and recorded by Raffaele Serra in Winter 2001-2002 at Mekon Studio. [press-release]

Telepherique + Bianchi, Maurizio -- "Zehn Tage (Touka)" -- CD -- €9
2004 AFE Records, afe059cd
Experimental. "Zehn Tage (Touka)" is a very special work born from the great friendship of two well-known estabilshed artists. The album concept is focused on the uselessness of time calculation compared to the precision of time itself. The disc title ("Ten Days", in english) refers and is dedicated to those forgotten days of History that were arbitrariously severed off in October 1582 during the Pope Gregorius XIII's Western Calendar Reformation. "Zehn Tage (Touka)" could be described best as a good mixture of Ambient and Concrete music: as in the best Afe record's tradition, it's not afraid of breaking down those genre boundaries, sliding further into psychedelic-tinged rhytmical territories. This is the very first collaboration in Maurizio Bianchi's rather long musical career and also the first Afe CD release... [label info]

True Colour Of Blood -- "(Absence)" -- CD -- €11
2003 Eibon Records / AFE Records, Tru043 / Afe052cd
When we think about "guitar players", we are misled by the very traditional concept of the "rock" guitarist playing riffs and solos..... WRONG !! There is a parallel universe where talented musicians like Eric Kesner use guitars (and nothing else.....) to build dense and flowing streams of sound. Dark ambient of the finest kind, where monstrously dark drones meet touching melodies; music that will project you into an unknown universe of reverberating sound-layers.........[press-release]

Vromb -- "Locomotive" -- 10" -- €11
2003 .ANGLE.REC., .A.R.10.01., (ltd. 500)
Hot on the heels of his latest 10inch, Le Tourne-Disque, which gained a very strong response from both fans and critics, Vromb strikes again with another 10inch release, this time focussing on the concept of locomotives and railways. Originally commissionned in 1994 for a theater play, called Faire du Train, the sound material on this release was recently re-worked and enhanced by the artist and it definitely pursues on the minimal technoid approach found on many Vromb past and recent releases, with atmospheric-oriented openings, intermezzos and closings, in purest Vromb tradition. Upon hearing the first seconds of the opening track, with the train passing in a desert plain, by night, at an unstoppable pace, the listener will undoubtedly recall some childhood memories, those moments when he heard the locomotive roar from the neighboring railway, seconds before falling asleepЕand was then dragged into organico mechanical dreamsЕ And then comes the sloppy, fat, blueprint Vromb rhythmic section.
